Bernardus in the words of my 9 yr old knows how to do fancy. We stayed in a vineyard villa suite and it was definitely worth the extra cost. It's a large suite. I appreciated the table large enough to fit a family of 4, the spacious patio with your own outdoor firepit, and large bathroom. Breakfast & dessert were good and reasonably priced. Adults enjoyed the complimentary wine in room & lobby and my daughter liked the lemonade. Nice plus was the kids didn't complain about the sofa bed. It had a thick foam padding on it (vs Carmel Valley Ranch where they nearly refused to sleep on the sofa bed). One thing we didn't like about the place was there grounds are pretty small. When I arrived, I asked if they had a running trail map and they just looked at each other surprised. I realized it's because you can't go running from there. I ended up driving a mile to Garland Ranch but it was average for trails (could hear cars most the time). There also wasn't much area for the kids to play outside. That's the one area where Carmel Valley Ranch has a leg up on them. On covid safety, I was surprised that room service would go into the room-- I felt really bad for the service staff. We had them leave the food outside. I was disappointed though when one server came into our room because we were on the patio & didn't hear the door (we had the do not disturb sign up).

We had a great time and they have procedures in place to deal with the covid situation. Sure not everything is open but they are doing their best to keep everybody safe and still have a wonderful holiday! The world has changed and in my book this resort is cooping with issues they never had to deal with or probably never thought they would. We would go back in a heart beat! Instead bicycles they do have several Mercedes Benz available.

I had booked a stay at Bernardus pre-Covid and almost cancelled, but so glad I didn't. The resort itself is stunning, the grounds peaceful, the staff on-point, professional but friendly and kind, and the amenities plentiful and luxurious. What impressed me most, though, was everything they did to ensure that guests were safe. From contactless check-in and (DELICIOUS) room service delivery (take their wine suggestions seriously, people - WOW) to temperature check stations, hand-sanitizer and everyone wearing masks - a trip I nearly cancelled turned out to be a safe haven and definitely the highlight of a pandemic-based 2020. I'm so glad I went and cannot wait to go back.

This was our 5th or 6th stay at Bernardus Lodge. Combined birthday & anniversary gift to each other. All previous stays were outstanding, so hate to write a bad review....BUT... First, everything pretty much closed... Favorite infinity pool overlooking mountains closed. Hottub closed... Great bar area closed..... Masks everywhere and $100.00 fine in Monterey Country for no mask in public. And sure...COVID rules and safety... BUT, all these closures and sitting outside in restaurant needs to be clearly communicated upfront when booking, not when you are at the front desk. A four star hotel with most services shut or diminished is not worth paying for. Also, we ordered room service several times because of stringent public space rules and every time we ordered the delivery was wrong or missing food ordered. Come on, you have to get room service right!! Will say food generally was outstanding and staff was fine.... just need to admit that you cannot operate to high standards presently. Not worth the price at the moment and we won't go back under draconian Monterey County rules. Wish the property luck and hope they can succeed.

Dear Thomasj89, I also hate that you have chosen this time to “write a bad review” when you stated that all your previous stays were outstanding. It’s extremely disappointing, but it is clear from your TripAdvisor contributions that you prefer not to write about your positive experiences. As a small business with tenured staff, we would love your support now more than ever. It sounds like your primary disappointment is with covid. You mentioned the “draconian Monterey County rules,” and that there were “masks everywhere.” The fines you cited are limited to the business districts, the nearest of which is 18 miles from Bernardus Lodge & Spa. While you may be flippant about covid rules and safety – we simply are not. We abide by all state and local guidelines and it has limited some of our favorite amenities. However, I believe that in exchange for what we have temporarily lost, we have offered our guests increased peace of mind. Lucia Restaurant offers the most comfortable of outdoor dining; plenty of wind protection, outdoor firepits and twinkle lights. The Spa at Bernardus, open with a full spa service menu melts away stresses of the day. Our large leisure pool heated to 82-degrees, is perfect in any weather. Our team of authentic hospitality professionals is available at every turn – proudly serving visitors and locals alike. While we can’t escape the safety protocols of covid – Bernardus does offer an escape in every other way. I am sorry to read that your room service order was incorrect. Thank you for your kind compliments of our cuisine. If you truly wish us luck and hope for our success, I ask that you reconsider your rating and factor in the 6 outstanding stays you have had with us. I would ask that you not factor in local and state mandates that are in place to keep our staff and their families safe. We have served you well in the past and have directly apologized for our mistakes on this most recent stay. We hope to have your support now and going forward. Regards, Sean Damery Regional Vice President and General Manager
