Travelers' Choice

Carmel Valley Ranch is one of California’s best-kept secrets, an all-suite resort playground tucked away in the foothills of the Santa Lucia Mountains on the sunny side of the Monterey Peninsula. Named one of the top resorts in Northern California in Cond  Nast Traveler’s prestigious 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards, The Ranch is situated on 500 lush acres adjacent to the 4,400-acre Garland Ranch Regional Park. Guests enjoy easy access to miles of scenic hiking and can explore vineyards, gardens, and other natural wonders bordering the resort’s Pete Dye-designed golf course.

Carmel Valley Ranch is a place to grow young, where people can truly play—throwing caution to the wind, listening to their inner child, seeking pure, absolute fun. The Ranch makes it possible to pursue all kinds of adventure, from activities that thrill to opportunities to chill. Guests can take in artisan demonstrations, experience a revitalizing spa treatment, explore vineyards and gardens, play the area’s only Pete Dye-designed golf course, and much more. The resort’s most recent reimagination introduced a vast array of enhancements, including The Market & Creamery, two interactive culinary spaces; redesigned suites featuring smart-room technology; a new spa reception area and boutique; updates to meeting and event spaces; and a refresh of the golf clubhouse. The Ranch also continues to add experiential programming for all ages and interests, such as equine experiences,

Families, couples, and individuals alike will feel right at home in the all-suite accommodations at Carmel Valley Ranch. Comfortable and refined, they provide space to kick back after a long day of play—and plenty of room to keep the playfulness going. The resort features 177 spacious suites with valley-inspired interiors and furnishings that bring the outdoors in, open floor plans, fireplaces, and more. Averaging around 800 square feet, each suite includes a private deck, separate living room, complimentary Wi-Fi, flat-screen television, smart-room technology, and bath amenities made with fresh-pressed lavender harvested on property.

Suites range from studios to four-bedroom configurations, with many offering outdoor soaking tubs, kitchens, and other features perfect for entertaining. All provide stunning valley and vineyard views.

Dining:

Located at the heart of the resort, Valley Kitchen is the social hub of Carmel Valley Ranch. Designed by Rodrigo Vargas Design, SB Architects and The Paul Davis Partnership, the restaurant opened in 2015; it features an expansive 1,500-square-foot outdoor terrace with stunning views of the valley and vineyard below, as well as hanging lanterns that twinkle from ancient oaks at night. The restaurant’s main dining room features wooden tables with nail-head detailing and tweed settees, while a centerpiece bar pairs a reclaimed-wood wall with rustic shelves that display honey jars as a nod to the resort’s own beehives. A cozy lounge off the bar features comfortable chairs, sofas, and pool views.

Valley Kitchen’s menu reflects a hand-crafted, homegrown approach to food. Utilizing ingredients from the resort’s gardens, salt house, goats, and chickens, along with The Market & Creamery, every dining experience encompasses the produce, products, and people of Carmel Valley. It’s uncomplicated, unfussy, and delicious—perfectly embodying the values and light-hearted spirit of The Ranch.

Spa:

Nestled in the treetops, inspired by fragrant gardens and the four seasons, is the full-service Spa Aiyana (the Ohlone Costanoan Esselen Nation term for “eternal blossom”). A spacious 10,500 square feet, this natural escape features immersive treatments for individuals and couples such as massage and body work, sleep therapy, and more—many utilizing ingredients harvested in the resort’s gardens and beehives. For more intensive revitalization, our team of licensed estheticians provides clinical-grade skincare such as the HydraFacial™, exclusive to The Ranch. Spa Aiyana offers three VIP spa treatment suites with fireplaces, which can be connected for private events; eight deluxe spa treatment rooms; and a manicure and pedicure salon overlooking our living roof succulent garden. The spa’s wellness program encourages guests to interact with nature through hiking, meditative walks, and yoga on the spectacular hilltop yoga platform. A Spa Experience Coordinator is available daily to consult on treatments and activities. Spa Aiyana also features an Experience Bar, where guests can sample organically sourced luxury skincare products; the Boutique offers lifestyle and resort apparel as well as swimwear.

Activities:

As a resort dedicated to play in all its various forms, Carmel Valley Ranch offers guests a wealth of opportunities to expand their horizons or simply enjoy longtime favorites. Outdoor activities abound among the resort’s 500 acres of gardens, trails, and other natural wonders, with highlights such as equine experiences, disc golf, off-road excursions, and much more. Indoor pursuits include artisan-led culinary demonstrations and classes, spa-inspired workshops, and other interactive adventures. For the sports-minded, golf, tennis, pickleball, and bocce are available, along with a broad selection of complimentary fitness offerings. Many activities are geared specifically toward children and/or families as well—The Ranch is truly a setting with something for everyone.

Golf:

Carmel Valley Ranch features the only Pete Dye-designed bentgrass golf course in Northern California, a par-70 layout that offers something for all players: tactical shots, dramatic elevation changes, and incredible scenery. It’s a rollicking good time, ranked among the top resort courses in the country by Travel + Leisure’s “World’s Best” readers’ survey. The clubhouse offers spectacular views of the course, along with interiors that incorporate the colors, textures, and vibe of the valley. Featuring sweeping vistas, an expansive bar, and a large outdoor patio with fire pits, it provides a contemporary ambiance and stylish social atmosphere for both golfers and non-golfers.

Tennis:

The Ranch has seven courts for tennis and four for pickleball at River Ranch, with programming led by Peter Burwash International professionals. Programs include daily instructional clinics or drills, private lessons for all ages/levels, and dedicated tennis education and camps for kids throughout the year. Players can be matched based on their level of play for a diverse playing experience; customized tennis and pickleball packages catering to each player’s specific needs are also available.

Carmel Valley Ranch has become our annual vacation to relax and unwind. The initial drive onto the property with the adorable ranch guard house, rolling greens, and friendly/easygoing staff to the deer and turkeys greeting you on the way up to the lodge- each day is spectacular! Sunsets and rainbows, stunning landscapes. Hubby loves that our hotel room is right on the golf course for quick drink/snack during his game. The fitness classes, tennis courts, clubhouse and pools make you feel like a local. The town of Carmel/Pebble Beach is a short drive to enjoy fine dining and adorable shops- can't wait to come back!!

We stayed at Carmel Valley Ranch for three nights last weekend for our 25th wedding anniversary, where we were immediately welcomed with a glass of wine to toast our anniversary. To our surprise, our arrival night was their annual holiday tree lighting, and although we were there without our children, it was heartwarming to see the young families lined up for photos with Santa, enjoying hot chocolate and cider…it brought back memories of our prior stays here with our children. This was our seventh visit to CVR, and each time we find new things to explore. The food was amazing…Brussels sprouts with kimchi and fried egg on top, signature huevos rancheros, house made fresh focaccia…just a few of the amazing dishes in their culinary program. Evenings around the outdoor fire pit roasting smores over a gentle oak burning fire, our Saturday morning spa treatments, the picnic lunch up at the corral with Pablo and Paco, a dip in the infinity edge hot tub, to our gentle, meandering stroll through lavender fields, pinot noir vineyards, the Valley Kitchen vegetable garden, past the chicken yard, down to the family pool, tennis and pickleball courts, bocce courts…three nights and we never got in the car, never left the grounds. Such a romantic setting!!

Pros: Beautiful, spacious, and comfortable rooms. We had the room with the outdoor tub and enjoyed hanging out there. When we first arrived, the tub was draining rapidly and our devices were not casting to the tv. After a couple calls and a long wait, facilities resolved the issues fairly quickly. We got the breakfast buffet both mornings we were there and enjoyed both the variety and the quality of the food. Customer service up at the lodge was friendly and welcoming. Hiking trails nearby were a good challenge. There were so many amenities and we tried a number of them, including the exercise classes, which were led by experienced instructors. Cons: Our experience was uneven. It’s a large resort and sometimes there was a lack of communication between areas. On our second day, we were trying to find a place for dinner that wasn’t in the main lodge (we had dined there the night before). We were told we could dine at the clubhouse at the golf course and at River Ranch. When we walked to the clubhouse we saw that here was a wedding reception, so they were not open for dining. We called guest services to confirm that we could get dinner at River Ranch because we wanted confirmation before we walked further. We were told dinner was available. When we arrived, those at the front desk told us that the restaurant was closed even though guest services gave us a different closing time. Apparently they sometimes close early if it’s not busy. After trying to clarify if it was actually closed, they said we had to go and check ourselves. We walked about 20 feet and were told it was open. We could understand if there was lack of communication between guest services and River Ranch, but would expect those at the front desk would be able to tell us if the dining 20 feet away was open or closed! We decided to walk to most places and got lost multiple times. The map provided was not always accurately and could be hard to follow. A lot of signs warning you not to walk on the golf course, but it was sometimes difficult to tell what were walking paths and what was for golf carts only.

We've been coming here for a few years and really like the vibe. It's a great place for families, and we've noticed an increasing number of them in the holiday season. All the amenities are great and the programming is convenient (if pricey). Definitely recommend Carmel Valley Ranch if it fits into your budget!

What an incredible experience on an incredible property. The most beautiful and peaceful place I've ever stayed. The staff at CVR have thought of everything to make your stay unique and memorable--and if there is anything that you need they immediately respond to accommodate. We received the warmest greeting by Ulrich and Rebecah right when we checked in, and were so grateful to Greg who helped us with all of our ridiculous luggage (and didn't even cringe as half of our clothes came pouring out of the back of the car as he was helping us!) Bert was knowledgeable and had great recommendations for our dinner in the Valley Kitchen. All of the staff here are so wonderful and helpful. The rooms are so very spacious, comfortable, and full of every amenity--you can't help but instantly relax and enjoy the scenery and truly escape from the real world. Only an 8 mile drive into town, half a mile from Folktale Winery, and the ocean and more amazing dining. We can't wait to come back. Thank you for the wonderful hospitality.

Stay was awesome! Would highly recommend for a short retreat from the city. Overall drive was around 2:15 to get to Carmel valley. They were extremely thoughtful to gift a nice bottle of Carmel valley reserve Pinot Noir wine for my wife’s birthday. Also at night they have smores ready to go. Everything was peaceful. (Although most mornings you could find or run into a leaf blower.

We had an absolutely amazing stay at Carmel Valley Ranch! We stayed there for 2 nights but wish to have more time at least 3 nights there. From the moment we arrived, everything was top-notch. The room was stunning, big and beautifully appointed, and the attention to detail was evident in every aspect of our stay. The staff members were exceptional. They were courteous, attentive, and always ready to assist with a smile. The resort offers many activities. Thank you for providing such a wonderful and memorable experience

It was a conference weekend getaway and enjoyed my stay very much. The food was outstanding and loved the huge and spacious patio facing the nountains. The only negative part of my stay was that the shower pressure was not powerful enough, so I felt that I was getting a slow flow. Overall, a very peaceful and relaxing stay.
