My wife and I stayed only 1 night, in the midst of the Covid pandemic, so we didn't have the the opportunity to experience all of the hotel amenities. (The restaurant and pool were closed, as to be expected.) That said, we were very happy with our stay. The hotel is taking the appropriate steps to be as clean and safe as possible. It was a bit foggy so we didn't have a tremendous view, but our room was very nice, clean, quiet, and comfortable. We ordered take-out from a nearby restaurant and ate dinner (safely) on our balcony. I also liked having our own entryway, to avoid hotel elevators and interior hallways. If you are traveling during this pandemic, the Hyatt Carmel Highlands is a great option!

Hotel's Favorite
We have been visiting Carmel every January for the past 35 years. Throughout the years we have stayed at the Lodge at Pebble Beach, Spanish Bay, Cypress Inn ,Lobos Lodge and many others. Highlands Inn is now our favorite. The ambience of rustic peacefulness with the Best Oceanview around. We stopped coming here when they became timeshare a few years back but we decided to give it another try and we were very impressed. The rooms are a little bit dated but that’s the beauty of this place. We stayed at a two-story townhome with an amazing ocean view. The service was excellent from check in at the front desk to check out. Eric was very helpful in checking us to our room, housekeeping was very efficient and papers delivered timely every morning. Every staff member seem to really care and give the best customer service Making sure you are happy. Will definitely be coming back. Looks like they got their mojo back.

I just finished a 3 night stay at the Hyatt Carmel Highlands. My wife and I were on the fence about cancelling our trip due to the wildfires. We were monitoring it closely and they had it contained 2 days before we arrived and air quality was good so we decided to go and glad we did. This was my first time at this property. Reading posts on Flyertalk and TripAdvisor it seems like people either love this property or hate it. Some people complained about road noise from the highway below but we didn’t have ANY issues with noise at all. Part of Highway 1 was closed further down the road and Point Lobos park was also closed so maybe that prevented a lot of traffic. I booked this several weeks ago and at the time there were no suite upgrades available and they said they were sold out. I booked an ocean view king room. But with the wildfire, there were a ton of cancellations and then I was able to book an Oceanview suite. I got the Oceanview Townhouse Spa Suite (#507) which was terrific. It was very spacious on two levels. It had a full kitchen, fireplace in the living room, and jetted tub in the bathroom. The view was incredible. Everything worked well in the suite. I didn’t use the kitchen other than the fridge. There are so many great restaurants in the area we ate out each meal. The downside of the hotel is with COVID the restaurants are all closed. The outside jacuzzi wasn’t available. The outdoor heated pool was available but we never used it. Also, they didn’t have room service available or maid service. You could call for more towels if you wanted and they would leave them outside. I didn't understand why the restaurant wouldn't be open as they seem to have plenty of outdoor space. ALL the restaurants in town were open and they packed the sidewalks with tables. It's an injustice the restaurant wasn't open at all. I'm a Hyatt Globalist and would have gotten free breakfast each morning and all they offered was 500 points. They have a big woodpile around the corner from the room and we certainly used the fireplace every night. It was really romantic with the view at dusk. People complained about a smoke smell in the room and indeed you could smell some smoke smell in the room from people using the fireplace so much. It wasn’t too bad but people sensitive to smoke smell should keep this in mind. Also, you can’t keep your balcony screen door open because everyone around you is using their fireplace so the smoke smell also goes into your room that way. The other downside is the shower is super small for such a large property. There was a shower both upstairs in the top level and downstairs in the bedroom level. But keep in mind both were REALLY tiny. In fact, a larger obese person might feel like it's not big enough. It looks like they renovated these units a few years ago. I prefer modern style vs. rustic and I’d say these suites are rustic but it was very comfortable and the location was great only about 10 minutes from downtown Carmel. We had a rental car and I’d definitely recommend a rental car. We used it quite a bit to go back and forth to Carmel, Pebble Beach, Monterey. It was a bummer that the wineries were closed near Carmel Valley during our stay due to the fires but we enjoyed some of the tasting rooms in Carmel. Our favorite was the Albatross Ridge Tasting room. Definitely do yourself a favor and great lunch/dinner places are Anton & Michel, La Bicyclette and the Flying Fish in Carmel. The Bench over at Pebble Beach was also great. (Get the roasted strawberries crisp! It was amazing). AVOID Portabella. We went there one night for dinner as we always saw it packed for lunch and dinner but the food was super mediocre/poor. I got the pasta and I assumed it would be fresh pasta for an expensive Italian place. But they brought out overcooked boxed pasta. Was really horrible. Great coffee at Carmel Valley Coffee Roasting Company in downtown Carmel. It was also a huge disappointment that Point Lobos Park was closed. We made due at nearby Carmel Mountains Trailhead which is just north of Point Lobos (It's on Google Maps). You can park on Highway 1 and access it. Also, definitely go to Garrapata State Park. They had beautiful hiking trails which was really gorgeous. Bixby Bridge which makes Highway 1 possible is also a must visit. Beautiful. 17 Mile Drive is also a must visit near Pebble Beach. I read somewhere that they charge a fee to enter with a car but we had reservations for lunch at Pebble Beach and they just let us in but there was no checking or anything. So I guess you can say you are eating at Pebble Beach and they should let you in free. Also, one of the highlights of our trip was renting electric bikes at Mad Dogs & Englishman bike store in Carmel. Before noon it’s $75 for all day per bike. After 12 PM it’s 2 hours for $50. DEFINITELY do this. Was breathtaking going on that bike ride and even with the hills, the electric bike makes it really easy. It was supposed to be sunnier and unfortunately it was mostly cloudy but that sounds like normal for this time of year. Next time in the area, I’ll try Ventana Big Sur which I also read great things about. I'd definitely come back here but I wouldn't book unless an ocean view room was available. I can't imagine staying here and getting the "Garden view".

I usually stay here on my last day of business before leaving CA. Great View and the Service was Excellent. My last two visits (March 2020 and August 2020) it was more than disappointing! I was told the two restaurants and room service were closed first because of local rules and then because of corporate; funny since they have the best two patios on the CA coast!? They still charge you a resort fee even though nothing is open? (Hot Tub, Bikes, Gym, etc) It's so far out of town, it's best to stay in town...at least you can get a drink of water? The folks working the front desk should not be in hospitality. I feel for the industry and Hyatt, but they have done nothing to keep this Historic Gem going.

Don't stay here, especially if you will be coming with a vehicle. Our car was broken into in the parking lot and the hotel will not take responsibility. Upon filing a police report, the police informed us that they have had more than a normal number of car breakins at the property and have advised the hotel to get security, but they have not. I saw zero security during my stay. To top it off, they do not have cameras, which allows the hotel to state that they cannot confirm the crime happened on their property. If you'd like to have your car windows broken and have the hotel deny responsibility, you can definitely accomplish that at this property! I would add that the ocean view rooms with fireplaces are good, but the road noise from highway 1 is noticeable.
