Stunning scenery and location, a beautiful quaint hotel that exceeds your expectations in Matka Canyon, Macedonia.

Canyon Matka Hotel is very cosy, located in the heart of the gorge, you feel instantly at peace, surrounded by the lake and nature.

The rooms are very clean, and be sure to book one facing the lake to enjoy the magic views of the canyon. A nice surprise was you receive a free bottle of wine for your stay.

The restaurant and bar are full of views and all tables have the same magical views, you truly feel you are in a private oasis, it was very tranquil.

The food was exceptional, we really enjoyed the crisp fresh salads and the meat and fish dishes were mouthwatering. After four days we dined a few times and were equally impressed with every dish. The menu was extensive and desserts were also a treat, portion sizes were plentiful.

We enjoyed a few cocktails on the terrace, soaking up the views and they were made to perfection. It was also a busy spot for day-trippers, following their experiences in the canyon.

A big thank you to Dejan for his high level of service, he was very attentive and warm. Most staff have been with the hotel for long durations, and make you feel very welcome, they exude energy and friendliness. Alexander is the manager and was an absolute delight to spend time with too.

if you are an early riser it's worth noting breakfast starts at 9 am. They have a range of choices, the bacon, and eggs baked with cheese were delicious, fresh juices available and coffee was excellent.

A boat trip with Almata Prima Kayak Rental And Boat Tours, located next to the hotel, through the canyon is well worth doing, it was magical. You also visit a cave, only one hour for the trip, and very affordable on a luxury pontoon at 500 denar - €8 each (normally 750).

Another fun activity is to kayak through the canyon, ideally during the morning if you want to avoid the tourists, it is a very popular place to visit. If you are a fan of hiking, there is no shortage of treks.

A fellow guest we became friends with from the US, has stayed in this gorgeous hotel for five weeks, a true testament to the hotel and friendly staff.

The hotel is about a 10-minute walk from the car park via a cobblestoned trail, but the hotel will ensure your luggage is transported, we loved the simplicity and the experience.

To have the canyon a short 25 minutes from Skopje, the capital city of Macedonia is a true treasure, recommend staying for a few nights to truly enjoy the atmosphere and nature.

The place is absolutely stunning and worth a overnight stay to embrace it all once the crowds have left. The accomdation sits behind the restaurant and is up some stairs. There are many rooms with a traditional wood effect decor. This makes the corridors and walkways loud at night. Fine for us, but worth mentioning. A small mishap when we were lead to our room before check in time) to find it was not clean they rectified this quickly. The hotel is past the dam and about a 20mins walk from the bus stop. It's uphill and we'd backpacks. If you are travelling by taxi it is easier. The hotel isn't very well signed but follow the trail and you can't miss it.
The staff are helpful and the manager was really nice to us. The restaurant closes early but he allowed us to take our drinks to the cafe bar area. As part of our booking.com reservation, we'd a free bottle of wine and breakfast. We were happy with both. Breakfast is cereal, boiled eggs, Olives, Cucumber, cheeses and Sausages and an array of bread. Juices and free tea and coffee. The restaurant for dinner is more expensive than elsewhere. Would I go again? Definitely for the beautiful view!!

After our boat trip we sat for lunch. The food was excellent as was the service and the views are fantastic. Be sure to give yourself time to get back down to the bus stop though as it is about a 15min dash. Taxis are abound so if you miss the bus you won't be stranded. The general area could do with some investment in both money and time.

Restaurant manager was an absolute tool. Requested the pasta and salmon and asked if they can add truffle to the pasta (there is a truffle pasta dish or a pasta dish (no truffle) with salmon). I told the waitress I would pay extra for truffle shavings on my pasta with salmon. I was brought truffle pasta with no salmon. After my tour guide spoke with the manager I walked over and stated, "nevermind, you can keep the truffle pasta, I no longer want anything since this is an issue." Manager stated truffle is more money and i ordered it so I must pay for it..... He tried to stare me down and I laughed and tilted my head and stared back and said, "ok, we are done here, I'm 100% not paying for it - remove it from my bill." Maybe hire adults as managers - they threw out the pasta instead of adding an upcharge for truffle shavings. Lol. Tool.

The worst coffee we ever had in life, the most expensive. They didn't want to change the bad impression with offering good substitute, or not to pay the bill. Also it was not clean, it's a shame to bring a guest and show them the beauty and hospitality of Macedonia! So disappointed!

Two of us stopped for a light lunch after exploring Matka Canyon. Two rakia, one large water, one salad, two hot peppers, one trout, one coffee, one beer. When I asked for the bill the server instantly said “2,150 denar” without producing a bill. When I observed that I thought that was a bit high and asked to see a bill, he eventually produced one. We were charged for 2 salads and 800 grams (2 pounds) of fish. I pointed out we had ordered and eaten one salad, he replied it was two salads served in a single dish. I observed that the one trout was nowhere close to 800 grams, he shrugged and said that was what they recorded (the evidence, alas, was long gone). His country, his rules.

So this might be a nice place for a drink after exploring the canyon – the view is beautiful, the restaurant is comfortable – but this light lunch was one of the most expensive meals we had in three weeks of dining in Macedonia, including 5 nights in Ohrid. We order a salad at every meal, and have never been charged for two salads. I do not like being ripped off, so I might stop here for a drink (it is the only place on the water) but would never eat here again.

Amazing scenery. You have to walk the last 300 metres up to the hotel rather than drive. We did a beautiful walk up the other side of the canyon to a monastery. Shame the boat wasn't there to take us, but really good. Nice food and a basic but clean room. If you are in Skopje, take the time to visit.

Nice place, 15-20 min. driving from Skopje canyon of river Treska, beautiful nature with several Zen places, rooms and accommodation is fine, if you want beautiful nature, fresh air and a walk in nature, a great choice. My personal advice avoid the weekend, it is overcrowded. Overall it is worth visiting canyon Matka and spend the day / night there ..

My wife and I came here only planning to spend two nights and ended up staying for nine wonderful days. We stayed in Room #105 overlooking the lake. Hotel has a limited number of rooms; All of which are well appointed and very clean. Ours had an LG Plasma-Screen TV, Mini-Bar, refrigerator, table with chairs, night stand, big closet, easy chair and a Jacuzzi in a very spacious room. Two double windows facing the mountains.

Tucked away between towering limestone Karsks; the hotel is a short hike from the small parking lot at the end of the road from Skopje. Taxi fare from the city is 500 Denar. Hotel staff has a man with a motorized cart that will take your bags to reception on request. Alex is the general manager of the hotel. Great guy with a smile as big as the moon. Answered every question we had and assisted us in any way he could. I cannot overstate how nice the staff at the hotel is nor how well we were treated. I was so relaxed after the first two days I quit taking my blood pressure medications. I'm not kidding.

Lots of hiking trails in the area. Everything from flat, lakeside paths to more strenuous climbs up the surrounding hills. Wildflowers, eagles, and absolute quiet in the early morning hours. I had read an earlier review of this hotel written by somebody who claimed that they paid $70 US for a boat ride on the lake. It isn't true. The boat tickets are only 350 Denar which is approximately $7 US. There are a number of caves that you can tour if you're into that sort of thing. Kayaks are available for rent by the hour. The hotel has nothing to do with the boat operations but due to their proximity I thought that they were part of the resort. They are not.

Hotel has a great Al fresco cafe/ restaurant overlooking the water. Entrees start at $7 US and can run up to $23 US if you're a Filet Mignon eater. Best tables are reserved for hotel guests and the management kicks in a free bottle of wine every day. What's not to like? As soon as the sun sets you'll pretty much have the place to yourself as the locals have all gone home. Romantic setting under a star studded night-sky.

I strongly advise that you stay during the week. The area is jammed with locals on weekends but they all leave as soon as it gets dark. During the day it can get noisy; Especially if you have a room facing the lake. Restaurant plays soft music till midnight so there is 'That'. Housekeeping needs an occasional nudge to swap out towels. Rooms in the back are quieter but also smaller and lack the view. You'll definitely want the view. My wife and I have traveled and traveled much over the past 30-years and we rarely find a hotel that qualifies as a real keeper. This is most assuredly; 'A Keeper'. It is only the third hotel that has earned a five-star rating from us.

St. Andrew's monastery is right next to the hotel. Built in the 14th century it contains some remarkable frescoes. The Matka dam which was built in 1935 is a two-minute walk from the lobby. The Nazis tried to blow it up with a Panzer battalion in 1944 but Macedonian partisans beat them off. The dam has a 'Force Ten From Navarone' vibe going for it.

We wouldn't even bother to think twice about returning here. It's that good.

Dear, You can take a Bus from the airport to the city Center, Company name is Vardar Express and after that from the last stop of this Bus you can take the Bus number 60 to Matka. Or you can always take a taxi from the airport to Matka, it should not be more than 30 euro. Best regards

Er zijn trappen en er is geen lift. Er zijn geen kamers op de begane grond. Verder de bezienswaardigheden hier kunnen enkel en alleen worden bezocht en gedaan als je goed ter been bent.
