I had read good things about Fujioto Ryokan. Service was excellent - our bags were taken up the wooden stairs for us (and back down when we left). Instructions on the way things worked were clearly articulated in perfect English. The traditional Japanese rooms did not have ensuites so the bathroom was shared, however I seemed to pick shower times... More

We recently spent two nights at this amazing place, a traditional inn in the heart of Tsumago. The inn is great, fantastic atmosphere, very friendly, helpful and English speaking staff. the owners are extremely hospitable. The rooms are generous, bath is communal but very clean and never had to wait in line. the food is outstanding: one night 8 courses,... More

Though the room is not ensuite which I am very accustomed to but the rest of factors compensated this shortfall. Service is excellent and food is great. We needed to leave earlier than usual to start our long trail walk for the day and they specially prepared our breakfast early. We get a nice surprise of group photo as souvenir.... More

Great hospitality. The folks here speak good English and very warm. Dinner and breakfast are great. The shower and toilet facilities should be located tog instead of seperated. Clean rooms and facilities.

Amazing hospitality especially for non Japanese speaking folks. Great food. Delicious home cooked by the owner's wife. Upon stepping in after a long walk, greeting by a gentle soft spoken young lady that has been very helpful throughout the stay. Strongly recommend for all travelers.

Ryokan Fujioto is deservedly one of the best rated ryokan on tripadvisor. I had stayed here before, back in 2012, and wanted to bring my family on the Nakasendo trail, so I immediately thought of Fujioto. It is one of the most welcoming places I have stayed in a long time. The host, who likes to use his Italian name,... More

We arrived at Fujioto Ryokan from Magome to Tsumago to a warm welcome from Fujimoto-san. He is the 3rd generation owner of the inn, built by his grandfather in 1905. He introduced himself as Franco being his Italian name as he worked in Italy for 10 years. Its a small inn with only 8 rooms, incredibly attentive service, with English... More

My wife and I stayed here for two nights last March during our first holiday travelling in Japan, in the height of the blossom season. First off, the reception by the proprietor Mr. Fujihara, his wife and staff was very friendly and cheerful. Others have described the facilities which are, as one must expect, traditional old-style Japanese (this ryokan has... More

Simply put, stay here - you won't regret it! Great location to hike the Nakasendo trail, it has its own Japanese baths, lovely tranquil small gardens and some of the best food you'll have. I'd recommend this ryokan to anyone. There is an 8 course tasting menu dinner and fantastic tapas type breakfast too. They also kindly sprayed all of... More

Ryokan's can seem like an expensive option for sleeping on a floor mattress and sharing toilets/ bathrooms etc but here is the rub. Anywhere else in the world you'd pay just the evening meal price for dining out- let along the accomodation plus breakfast. And at Fujioto it's a brilliant 8 course meal that awaits you every evening. Fresh, tasty, wholesome food... More
