Travelling with 2 toddlers under the age of 2 wasn't easy. We started our Nakasendo walk from Magome heading towards Tsumago (with 2 toddlers in tow). We finally reached Koshinzuka at 4PM, tired and cold. We walkted into a warm and cosy house. Masa san served us hot tea and biscuits for the family. The place was empty and we had 2 rooms to ourselves. The twins were too tired and slept at 5PM, and missed the yummy dinner. They prepared the most amazing dinner with extras for the twins. Tempura vegs from his garden and the most amazing fish. Had a cozy sleep and woke up to another amazing breakfast. Love this place, it was the best and warmest hospitality. We will be back again and thank you Masa San

Masa

Highlight of a family trip to Japan, wished we could stay longer. We walked the Nakasendo trail from Magome (about 7 Kilometres) to Koshinzuka which is about 1.5 Kilomtres before Tsumago. The owners run the Minshuku in a very traditional manner and do their best to explain everything in English (which is limited). Fortunately one of our family members speaks some Japanese and a man from Osaka who was staying spoke very good English. Food is sourced locally and is excellent. Dinner sitting around an open fire (including various descriptions of Japanese culture and singing!) lasted about 2 hours. Rooms are very traditional, washing facilities are very good, and you are in a very quiet countryside setting. We were advised to travel without suitcases which was sensible. I can highly recommend this minshuku.

Perhaps not as well reviewed or popular as Fujioto on Tsumago, this minshuku is about 1km outside of Tsumago, right on the Nakasendo trail between Magome and Tsumago. The owner, Masa-San, is an absolute gem. To book, you email him your information and dates that you want to stay- this is on his website. We checked in between 3-4pm and saw him picking the vegetables for our dinner! Our room was lovely, with a little balcony overlooking a stream and small garden. The minshuku is small and intimate, and it a great way to meet other travelers, as it seems like he only has 3-4 rooms. Dinner was the highlight- it is a shared dinner in the common space, with fresh food that he has picked/raised from his own farm. The common area can get a little smoky from the central firepit, just a word of caution for any asthmatics out there. He explains every dish to you, and shows you photos like you're family. He ends the night with some songs, and he is a wonderful singer! It was truly an unforgettable experience! To top it off, the luggage service from Magome to Tsumago will drop your bags off directly at his place, so no need to lug your baggage from Tsumago to his place. The following day, he also have us a ride to the Nagiso train station, saving us the hassle of trying to get there ourselves. Wonderful place, highlight of our stay!

This house is located literally on the Tsumago to Magoma trail, so no worries about trying to find it, then dinner is the best part of the experience and the home owner actually sings folks songs around his fire.

lovely stay - the host chatted to us about local traditions and sang traditional songs over dinner - really atmospheric eating area. Our room overlooked a lovely small garden and stream. Very friendly.
