We last visited for an anniversary trip over 30 years ago, and returned for another anniversary. The new owners are friendly, already well known to staff at the local restaurants such as Robins and Linns (both within easy walking distance), and to the owner of the amazing craft olive oil and vinegar store Montello, whose black walnut balsamic vinegar flavored some of the 5PM hors d’oeuvres that the new owners served with complimentary wine in the back deck and garden area. The owner personally poured the local wine and conversed with all the guests, creating a warm atmosphere. The garden was full of blossoming shrubs that attracted local hummingbirds. The owners retained the prior cook and wait staff, who served tasty and filling breakfasts at two seatings. Excellent social distancing precautions followed both in the dining area and the outside patio, and powerful space heaters. During March through may when closed by the pandemic, the owners did major remodels, and we enjoyed the spacious Cambria room with its private bath and modern shower, the natural gas fireplace, and excellent WiFi. We stayed four days and took advantage of the free Tuesday special.

This was our second stay at the Olallieberry Inn, 25 years after the first visit. We're thrilled to report it was just as lovely as the first time, and even with all the new safety protocols we were comfortable and well taken care of. One of the highlights continues to be the delicious breakfast service each day. Taylor and Maria and Angie were so gracious and accommodating to any and all requests (GF in advance), and all the food was absolutely wonderful. We did miss being sat at a long table with all the other guests, which makes for more conversation and feeling like you're part of a special lucky few who get to stay there. However, the COVID protocol eliminated that option, so they have tables spaced apart and more of a cafe atmosphere. You can still converse with others, and you have the option of indoor or covered porch dining, which on a sunny morning is especially nice. We didn't attend the evening happy hour because we were always still out and about enjoying the charm of Cambria village and the coast, but we heard other guests comment on how nice it was.

We stayed in the Olallieberry Room, a large queen room on the front of the inn. It has an updated bathroom, comfortable bedding, two luggage racks (thank you!) and closet space. (One caveat - because it's an old house, the ceiling in the shower slants a bit on one side, so if you're taller than 6'2" this could feel a bit low. My 6' hubby had no problem.) You also have a Keurig coffeemaker in the room, and a small but effective freestanding electric fireplace.

The location is another plus, just at the east end of Main Street and that means walking distance to everything in town. For a small town there is a nice variety of shops and restaurants, plus a market if you want to purchase snacks, etc for a picnic at Moonstone Beach. For that you'll need a car, but it's worth the short drive across Hwy 1, and there is plenty of free parking everywhere. All in all, three absolutely perfect nights and days in a town where time moves slowly and people are just nice.

Excellent service by tonya and nina! The property is spotlessly clean. The rooms and grounds are very charming. Every detail of the Inn is thought through and decorated with taste.Very romantic B&B, owners really care anout their business and customers.Enjoyed wine and appetizers in the garden(included in the roommate). The breakfast was very nice (freshly prepared by chef)however all four of us thought the amount of yogurt with local berries was inadequate for each person(small bowl for each table of four to share). Overall the amount of food isenough, but would suggest to offer bigger yogurt bowls especially considering that is has signature olaliverries). Also I would suggest to change the brand of wine that is available for sale at the property. It's cheap but undrinkable quality(wine during social hour in the Garden was ok, but the ones for sale were impossible to drink). Overall great experience and fair value for what u get

Hi Elena, Thank you so much for staying with us at the Olallieberry Inn. We sincerely appreciate it as well as the wonderful five star review! We're so happy you enjoyed our little romantic Inn as well as our three course gourmet breakfast and evening wine hour. We really appreciate your serving suggestions for yogurt and fresh berries. Please know, we always want our guests to be happy and satisfied and encourage our guests to just ask if they would like more of any of our course items like yogurt, fresh berries, orange juice, coffee, eggs, our famous Olallieberry French toast or whatever main dish we're serving. We really try to be sensitive of overages and want to limit our waste so sometimes it's hard to know just how much to serve on any given morning especially since our guests count is always different. Regarding your wine purchase. Oh my goodness. Maureen and I are so very sorry. I sincerely wish you would have mentioned something to Maureen when you checked out. We gladly credited your account for the purchase. I know you purchased the Terrica Pinot Noir. Terrica is a small Paso Robles vineyard wine that has been a huge hit with our guests that we've carried for years and have never, ever had any negative feedback on. I'm sure what happened is for some unusual reason you got a bad bottle. This will on rare occasions happen with reds. I'm glad you told us and we'll share this with our wine broker. Maureen and I really hope to see you both sometime in the future. Till then all our very best!

Our visit was overshadowed by an incident in their VERY DARK parking lot. My wife was unable to see as she got out of our car and tripped causing her to fall down onto the wet pavement. She injured herself and broke the screen on her cellphone... thankfully the injury is minor but we now have an unexpected $250 expense to replace the phone screen. This all could’ve been avoided if the Inn had some exterior lighting for that area. They do have a motion light mounted but it is completely obscured by the tree between it and the parking area. The ground level lights near that area were not working. The owner said much of the exterior lighting is not working due to the rain.

The room we stayed in was clean and comfortable, it had its own bathroom which I was very happy about. The bathroom had “Roman style” bathing, a shallow tub with a shower handle, you must sit to avoid water getting all over the bathroom because there is no shower curtain. Not my favorite way to clean up.

Breakfast is selected by the staff, our morning was a grainy bread made into a bland French toast with some scrambled eggs, a small amount of fruit to which you could add yogurt or granola. The portions were very small and staff cleared the plates as soon as they were empty... didn’t get more food but certainly wanted some.

Walls are thin but this is an older house so that is to be expected.

The staff was polite.

Response from Olallieberry, Owner at Olallieberry Inn

Modern review sites have given people the freedom and power to express their experiences, good or bad. I respect honest opinions and critiques. Like most business owners I'm saddened that some tend to misrepresent the truth and ignore their own behavior and responsibility when writing about their experience. I am comforted knowing that the vast majority of our guests truly enjoy their time here and proudly share the truth of their experience. For any potential guests reading this review, I would like to mention we have over 300 stellar Five star reviews many of which mention how they absolutely love their experience. Especially our rooms and three course gourmet breakfast. It is very sad and disappointing that this couple have chosen to write such a negative review. Worth noting, upon reading their other more than 1700 TripAdvisor reviews I see they are very busy being critical and were indeed recently critical of most all the businesses in the area. They gave our very charming Soto’s Market, our wonderful Fermentations tasting room and the Hearst Castle all 3 stars. They gave the famous beautiful Nepenthe restaurant a 2 star… all with their wisdom on how run a better business. This is only what I could describe as “Hit & Run” critical reviewing which can be very damaging to small businesses and small communities alike. Very sad. Fortunately, we all know you have to consider the source of reviews. First, I see the title says “Being a flashlight”. Okay, I understand this misspelled title and what this implies. Worth noting if they were more attentive they probably wouldn’t have had an incident. As our normal procedure, we always provide our guests with a flashlight, we mention it at check in, we have it written down on our check-in sheet, and it is found on the bed side of each room! We do this as an extra safety precaution and courtesy to our guests. We’re in the heart of town and most guests like to walk through town to the shops and restaurants and back again at night. Our guest could have easily seen as she was getting out of the car into the rain if she would have used a flashlight instead of holding her phone. These guests were a last minute booking and arrived late during a winter rain storm. We have quite a bit of lighting throughout the property. My wife and I surveyed the property the next evening and there was more than adequate lighting throughout the property and parking lot. The ground lights on that area of the parking lot were definitely working. Worth noting again, they arrived during a rain storm….but they didn’t bother to mention it here in their review however they did state it in a review of another business they visited that night. We have never had a guest fall on property and out of our 342 reviews to date not one mentioned poor lighting! We are, of course, always very concerned about our guests safety and well being. When we spoke to this couple at checkout we expressed how sorry we were to hear of this incident and asked many times if there was anything we could do. They had amble time to mention anything else and said nothing about a broken cell phone! Generally, if a woman has a phone with her it is in her purse not in her hand while walking. I suspect she was looking at the screen of her phone when she fell. We all have to take responsibility for our own actions. Speaking of embellishments to the truth, I can’t help but ask the question…. Since when does a cell phone screen costs $250? Okay, for some humor, let’s address the beautiful Olallieberry Room bathroom tub. Funny, We thought this comment was a joke. No shower curtain. Kidding right? On our website in our room description we clearly state that this room Does Not have a stand up shower, so of course we would not have a shower curtain. We have a beautiful sit down standard size Roman tub which includes a lovely hand held shower fixture which is not by any means meant to be an overhead shower! I can understand if someone has never seen this type of bath but again, we cannot be responsible for a guest who doesn't read or interpret what they read. As they say, truth is stranger than fiction, for they even posted a picture of our sign in this review. Yes, you must sit to avoid water getting all over the bathroom. That’s how it works. Next, they had issue with our breakfast. Yes, Breakfast is selected by the staff. That’s how it works. We’re not a diner. We have an excellent seasoned staff which includes our wonderful chef of 19 years. We provide an amazing three course gourmet breakfast each morning. We post our next morning's menu each day and there is information in each room communicating that. We have a commercial kitchen and offer wonderful home cooked meals each morning but we are not a short order restaurant. We're a B & B with a wonderful and ever changing but set daily menu which is always described in advance. We have prepared many different breakfasts in one morning whether it is allergy related, or simply a preference for gluten free, no carbs, dairy free, sugar free, vegetarian, or vegan, we enjoy tailoring our breakfasts to the needs of our guests. On this morning, among other things, we prepared one of our guest’s favorites. Homemade Challah bread with granola French toast and Olallieberry syrup. We ask simply to share your desire with us. If they didn’t like it or wanted more all they had to do was ask!. We are always happy and prepared to be of service and provide alternatives or additional servings if requested. To put it politely, I don’t think the B & B experience is this couples cup of tea. I don’t think these guests read or understood what to expect. Regarding “thin walls”, the Olallieberry room does not share a wall with any other rooms so I find the subtle insinuation to room noise odd. Certainly, possible but not a usual complaint about that room or the Inn as a whole. We try to learn from each of our reviews both the ways that we can improve what we have to offer and the ways we can better communicate exactly what it is that we do offer, however I don't know how we could have handled this situation any better. Unlike most guests, we really didn’t meet this couple until checkout. They booked at the last minute and arrived late on a very stormy day and left right after breakfast. I honestly think they just needed a quick place to stay and had no idea what a B & B experience should be. After reviewing their many other reviews I see they usually stay at contempary modern hotels. To our future guests, we’re consistently rated the #1 or #2 Inn for a reason. As small business owners we have a passion for what we do. We work really hard and have very high standards for our guest experience. I hope you’ll come visit for most all our guests love the Inn. Our number one goal is to offer our guests the most enjoyable Inn experience possible. I would like to share a five star review of guests who have also stayed in this same room. Titled “Blissful Rest” My wife and I had our first visit at the Ollalieberry Inn about one year prior and all the fond memories we had from that time were found true yet again. Great food, great hosts, great atmosphere, great hospitality, great fun. Location is prime. Breakfast will not disappoint. Clean/comfortable rooms. Stayed in the Ollalieberry room. Thank you Ollalieberry Inn! As our guest Carrie Jain recently wrote. “This Inn has quickly become one of our favorite vacation spots and the memories we've created here will last a lifetime. In November we even met a couple here who have become dear friends. Nelson and Maureen's ability to create such an atmosphere is really wonderful! I would HIGHLY recommend the Olallieberry Inn to anyone seeking a relaxing getaway to a beautiful oasis in Cambria!”

We just celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary and very much enjoyed our return to this wonderful Bed and Breakfast. Alana, the owner, is so friendly, gracious, and welcoming, along with her staff. Her B&B was spotless, quaint; and the chef created a wonderful breakfast each day. We love the 135 year old Redwood in her front yard! The complimentary hors d’oeuvres with wine during Happy Hour was appreciated and yummy, and it was fun meeting other friendly guests on her terrace and garden. Thanks for the memories!

Had a great 1 night stay at this beautiful inn. Was made to feel very welcome.

The room was lovely, very clean and with a very comfortable bed. Had a fantastic sleep.

The evening canapés was great and a nice way to meet the staff and other guests.

Breakfast was very good, served family style on the hot choice with granola, fruit and yoghurt etc.

The only bit of feedback would be to offer an alternative hot option for those with an egg allergy. My wife couldn’t eat the french toast and it made me feel guilty enjoying mine.

Other than that we loved the Inn and would return in a heartbeat.

Our four night stay far exceeded our expectations. The Inn is located within easy walking distance of Cambria’s restaurants, bakeries, shops...etc. It’s an easy drive to Moonstone Beach, Hearst Castle, San Simeon Bay, the Elephant Seal beaches and wineries in the Central Coast.

The owners and every single employee ensure your stay is fun and unforgettable. The breakfast was so filling that we skipped lunch. The afternoon Garden Party (5-6 pm with local wines and light snacks) takes place on the back deck overlooking a babbling brook. Both events were a fun way to meet the other guests and learn about what they had done that day.

The Inn itself is charming, clean and well-maintained. Beds are very comfortable. Plenty of hot water and our fireplace was a nice touch. Fresh baked cookies are always available and coffee is always out by 7:00 a.m. each morning.

A very cool experience. Strongly recommend.

We've stayed at Olallieberry Inn three times in less than two years and love it. All three rooms have been wonderful -- this last time we had the Angel's Nook a lovely cozy room upstairs in the Carriage House. The owners are friendly, welcoming and gracious. There are always other delightful guests to share interesting conversation and laugh with from five to six o'clock on the back porch overlooking the gardens and again the next morning over a five star (!!!) breakfast. We'd travel the distance for the breakfast alone. Cambria is a perfect stop-over when driving between Southern California and the Bay Area or an ideal location for a quiet weekend respite. (On our last visit one couple was celebrating a 25th anniversary, another a 50th anniversary, and another a landmark birthday.) A special place indeed.

My husband and I stayed at Olallieberry Inn during a coastal CA trip where each day we travelled down the coast and stayed in a different location. The Olallieberry Inn was a highlight. The owners are so warm and welcoming. In contrast to the hotels we stayed at during the trip, they welcomed us when we arrived early after a long day at Hearst castle and immediately made us feel like treasured guests. We enjoyed the happy hour and breakfast with other guests. Our room was lovely, clean and comfortable. We would definitely recommend this Inn to anyone wanted a special get-away!

We stayed at the Olallieberry Inn in Cambria for 3 nights last month. It is a lovely old country inn, which serves a wonderful homemade breakfast every morning and appetizers and wine in the late afternoon. Breakfast each day was different with scones, fruit, olallieberry yogurt and homemade granola accompanying various main dishes like pumpkin pancakes one day and individual crustless quiches another. Even the coffee was very good.
The rooms are comfortable and pleasantly no TV. There is wifi those who can't leave their phones untethered.
The there is little caretaker's cottage about 50' from the main house and if you can brave the elements first thing in the morning I recommend the Sunrise Room.
