The Sea Otter Inn comes highly recommended for its immaculate rooms and enchanting atmosphere, complete with cozy fireplaces and private patios that many guests cherish. While the room sizes and occasional maintenance issues have been called out, the overall comfort and cleanliness receive accolades. Guests have lauded the friendly service, especially the unique breakfast basket delivery, despite occasional lapses in responsiveness.
However, opinions on value for money are mixed, with some guests feeling the costs outweigh the benefits. The inn's tranquil location near the beach is frequently praised, although isolated noise complaints and a note on management have surfaced.

Detailed Reviews
This was our first stay at the Sea Otter Inn, and right off the bat we were impressed by the service while checking in. Our room was clean and mostly comfortable. The only thing we didn't like was the pillows, so you may want to bring your own. We liked how they did breakfast. You tell them the night before what you want, and they bring a basket to your room the next morning and hang it on a hook right outside your door. Great ocean view as well!

Room was clean and bathroom was nice . Enjoyed the shower but they need to get rid of their dingy looking towels that are no longer white. King bed was very comfortable and we enjoyed the gas fireplace . The picnic basket breakfast was very good . Our bacon , egg , potato and cheese burritos were hot and very filling . I enjoyed the fresh fruit cup which was plenty for 2 people. We appreciated the treats for our fur baby in the basket as well . My suggestion would be to add some tea bags on your coffee bar . I didn’t care for the coffee because the soft water from the sink made the coffee taste different to me . $3.00 for bottled water by the ice machine was ridiculous. Pet friendly . Across the street from the ocean and friendly staff. We will probably be back in the summer .

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveler reviews.
This isn’t my first review of the Sea Otter because we’ve probably stayed there 20 times over the last 20 years. We’ve stayed at almost every inn on Moonstone Dr. plus their sister property Cambria Pines Lodge and after this last stay I can honestly say they are my favorite.
It’s not modern in decor, which I normally prefer,or luxurious but everything just works at the Sea Otter. The rooms feel like a home away from home to us. We usually get a king patio but we’ve loved the ocean front too. The rooms have everything you need to make your stay comfortable. Nice size fridge that actually froze my ice packs in the freezer but didn’t freeze my wine, nice new microwave and coffee maker with a local brand Kcup not made out of plastic thankfully. Oh and thank you for the new soft white towels! Wine glasses in the room would be a nice touch like The Lodge has.
I love breakfast getting delivered at the door. I noticed we were the late sleepers because our basket would usually be the last one out. It’s so nice to grab your basket and eat on the patio or comfy in bed. So much better than being half asleep in the tiny lobby putting together your breakfast. I do miss the Italian pastries but maybe that is because of Covid. We treated ourselves to sparkling wine two mornings.
Speaking of Covid, I brought Lysol wipes to give everything a wipe down and the cloths were completely white after use. Everything I cleaned had been thoroughly cleaned before me. Everyone on property wore masks but unfortunately I can’t say the same for people walking on the boardwalk.
Bebe was absolutely wonderful and texted us every morning to see if we needed anything since they aren’t doing housekeeping between nights. She was great and also brought me a fan when I forgot mine. It wasn’t hot, I just like white noise when I sleep.
For dinner definitely eat at least on night at the Sea Chest, bring a flashlight or use your cellphone, or if you feel like staying in BJB’s Pizza Round up deliverers and they have other items besides pizza, but their pizza is great.
The only slight disappointment was our last night there was an amazing sunset. It had rained a little during the day but not for hours and no one lit the outdoor fireplace. I didn’t ask because the day prior I had asked and got the feeling I was being a pain. We still enjoyed the sunset but it would have been more lovely if the cozy fire was going. I hate to say anything negative but I hope that tip helps the front desk in the future.
I can’t wait to stay again. We’re hoping to get away in May for my birthday, this was actually a belated birthday trip for my husband but we were in lockdown in January, and The Sea Otter will be the first property I check. They run great specials so check often. Thank you Sea Otter for a much needed getaway. 🌅

I stayed here many years ago and love the location on Moonstone Beach and love that its is a small cozy spot to stay. It is still a great place on the Beach, the staff was great, and the room was comfortable. They delivered breakfast (chosen the night before) and hang it in a picnic type basket on a large hook outside your room so it is contactless and the food was good.

The rooms are very small and dated. The frig and microwave were in the closet, which we didn't find until later. The pastry basket breakfast was basically 2 Costo bought wrapped pastries. I guess I would have thought maybe something homemade? The hotel is right adjacent to Highway 1 on the backside so you can hear freeway noise in any of of the rooms near the back of the hotel. The room had an old fashioned TV armoire stand which took up a good portion of the room. Should get rid of it and mount a flat screen TV on the wall to optimize space. Walls were thin and you could hear neighbors. Location was right across from the ocean however and the firepits were gorgeous. Most of the other outdoor seating is reserved for specific rooms though.

Hi there, Thank you for your feedback! We're happy to share that we are in the process of updating rooms, which includes new furniture as well. The pastry items that guests can select as a part of their breakfast basket are from Edna's Bakery in SLO. We love to support local businesses whenever we can and due to COVID-19, the items are individually wrapped. We're glad that you enjoyed the proximity to Moonstone Beach and the outdoor fire pit area. Best, Isabella

We wanted a nice getaway from the hot weather where we live and Cambria certainly provided that. The hotel was clean and we enjoyed the jacuzzi, the views, the fire pit area and the basket delivered breakfasts the 2 mornings we stayed there. I think the fire pit hours should be extended to 10pm instead of turning them off at 9pm. Seemed too early to turn them off It was nice to sit out there with a glass of wine and talk to other guests.
The manager seemed to be a little snippy, not very warm and welcoming. I understand he has a business to run, but he had some tone and attitude in the answers he gave to the question we asked him.
Overall, we had relaxing time. The Moonstone Bar and Grill the area had a waiting line an hour before they opened for dinner, so that was not something we were happy with. We were gonna try the Oyster Sea Chest restaurant, but it also had an hour long wait or more prior to opening for dinner. We actually wound up going to down to Main Street and ate at Old Stone Station, and we had the best dinner of the 2 nights we stayed. Service and food was amazing.

Room 104 while nice and clean (smelled like disinfectant when we arrived), was terrible with the noise. The loud cleaning staff were one room away and we could here their constant yammering. The fire pit while nice had a woman talking on her cell phone, so we couldn't even open our window to hear the ocean, just her conversation. Room doors were constantly being slammed and would constantly reverberate into our room even during the quite time after 10:00 pm. Then there was an alarm sounding noise coming from one of the rooms around 2:30 am.
Had it not been a last minute trip, I definitely would recommend staying at another property for the same price, which we did the following night.
Also, no Sea Otter swag to purchase. Everything is logo'd with a shell/beach scene which was disappointing being that I love Sea Otters and would have purchased a wine glass or mug if it had the same logo as the hotel logo.
The staff person seemed a bit annoyed when we checked in, just not a warm or friendly welcome.
The best thing about the hotel beside the name was the location, but you can find a better room for the same price which is nicer and more modern right down the road.

We had a very pleasant stay at the Sea Otter. Our room was ocean-front with a sliding door that opened to a shared patio with our own reserved Adirondack chairs. We did pay extra for this view and it was worth it.
The property is conveniently located across the (non busy) road from the ocean. There’s a walking path adjacent to the water with beach access points at either end of the walkway. There’s also a popular dining spot a short walk from the property as well. This entire area is dog-friendly and bike friendly.
Our room was clean and spacious enough for us to spread out. The room amenities include a fireplace which was necessary for heat, a dining table, and desk. Free wifi was included as well which was helpful since we had spotty cell service once we got to Cambria. The property also includes a pool /hot tub and fire pit but we didn’t use those.
We were offered free breakfast, which you choose the evening before for delivery by 8:30am the next morning. We chose breakfast burritos the first day which were delicious and hardy enough to sustain us until dinner. The next day we chose yogurt parfaits with fresh fruit, and hard boiled eggs. Also fresh and delicious. My only comment was that our breakfast basket arrived each morning without our knowing. They delivered it but didn’t knock when it arrived so it sat for awhile before we opened our door to find it. No big deal but a little odd.
Our bathroom was clean and large enough. Bathroom toiletries were provided via dispensers attached to the shower wall. That was great but either the dispensers needed to be refilled or the nozzles needed to be cleaned because nothing came out when the levers were pressed. Luckily we had taken along our own toiletries so it wasn’t a big deal. I forgot to mention this at checkout to alert the office.
Overall we had a very nice stay. Cambria is a quiet little town and the perfect place to relax and enjoy the sights and sounds of the ocean. We will be back again soon.

If you ever visit Cambria, CA, we highly recommend the Sea Otter Inn, located at 6656 Moonstone Beach Dr Cambria, CA 93428.
We booked an Ocean View room and were so happy to be given the most desired one in the hotel. Room 101 is located at the front of the hotel just as you pull in, so you can park directly in front of your door. Our room was perfect. On the wall facing the ocean are side by side double hung sash windows. We opened both windows and feel asleep to the flicker of flames in the fireplace, an ocean breeze and sounds of crashing waves.
Just outside the windows sit two Adirondack chairs beneath a large Monterey Pine and a beautiful garden of flowers. The two chairs are reserved for that room, which is impotant because everyones wants to sit in them to enjoy the views. In the morning, you will find a picnic basket hanging on a hook outside your door. Inside the basket will be your delicious breakfast which you choose from a menu at check-in- a very nice and unique touch. We ordered the breakfast borritos with organge juice and added a small bottle of champagne for a memosa morning.
We will return soon.

Location is great but for the amount of money they charge per night the room did not meet the price. The furniture was dirty, outdated, old, the room smell. The size of the room is perfect and the litte patio outside is adorable. The area is great and we love how quaint and beautiful the town is, the staff was very friendly and attentive to the guest needs. If they simplify the room and do upgrades we would consider coming back.

Please disregard my previous answer - was thinking of a different hotel. Actually, the Sea Otter had a nice breakfast basket delivered to our door. We made our choice the night before. We ordered the breakfast burrito - very tasty. The fruit was fresh.
The king suite is in the back of the property. It does not have an ocean view but has its own small patio in back. There are two chairs at the front of the property that don’t appear to belong to any specific room.
