We just got back from a girls weekend gettaway here. The cottage we stayed at (Life) was just what we needed - a cute little place to sleep after spending the day at wineries and wandering around town. It's definitely a rustic place to stay. We had a sink and a toilet room and then 4 beds split among two rooms. There were dressers and a desk for plenty of storage space (which we probably would have used if we were staying longer than 2 nights) and a tiny little porch to sit on in the mornings and evenings. All the cotteges were in ample shade so it stayed pretty cool in our room, there were also some fans we could have used if it got too hot (it was 85-90 midday when we stayed and it was fine without fans) Breakfasts were simple but good. And they were very accommodating of gluten allergies. one of us has Coeliac disease and she didn't seem to have problems from the food. The grounds are lovely, tennis courts, hiking trails, a pool, and Lake Orth meant that we would have had plenty to do without even leaving the property. Overall - if you are totally fine with a few spiders in your room (daddy-long legs were the only type we saw) and would rather spend your time reading a book in nature than living in the lap of luxury - come here. If you want to be pampered with a spa weekend then this might not be the place for you.

We are glad you enjoyed your stay! We do have units with more amenities and fewer spiders, but we keep a few of the original rustic cabins for an affordable option we call "one step up from camping" like the Life cabin you rented.

There is more to Mountain Home Ranch that meets the eye! It is surrounded by beautiful trees, flowers, bushes and if you need an adventure just talk to John, he will tell ya all the hot spots on the property. The staff are some of the friendliest I have encountered throughout my travels. They offer food for all diets, in abundance, and it is delicious. The room was cozy and the bed was comfy. I would have loved a bath after some of our retreat sessions. It was a pure joy to watch the kids (the big ones too) run in to get carrots to feed to the animals. I visited MHR for a week long retreat. This lovely rustic ranch offered me all the necessities needed to make my home away from home a pleasant stay!

My husband and I stayed at Mountain Home Ranch while in town for a nearby wedding. We booked one of the smallest cabins (Harmony) and loved that we could support a family-owned operation at a very reasonable price (less than $100 per night!!). We woke up early and explored the property using a hand-drawn map to roughly follow a hiking trail along a creek next to some very impressive redwood trees. Breakfast was included with our stay and it was amazing: a large platter of fresh fruit including many types of berries, grapefruit, mango, grapes, melon, etc., homemade muffins, waffles, eggs, oatmeal, cold cereal, yogurt, coffee, and juice. We also enjoyed feeding carrots to the horses and goats. If we had planned to spend more time in our room itself we would have been more comfortable in a larger room or cabin, but Harmony was the perfect home base for us to explore the rest of the property, Calistoga, St. Helena, and local wineries including Castello di Amorosa. As expected at a rustic cabin like this, there were a few small, not-scary spiders here and there, it took a while for the hot water to turn on in the shared shower house, the mattress caved a little in the middle, and the room was hot at night even with the fan because we were there during a heat-wave when the daytime temperatures exceeded 100 degrees. That being said, I had no problem getting ready for the wedding there, everyone we met was extremely friendly, and we felt it was truly a great value (especially with the breakfast included!!). We would definitely return if we ever find ourselves in Calistoga again!

Suzanne and I took over the Ranch from my brother 20 years ago as a lifestyle change. We love what we do, especially the wonderful people we meet from all over the world. When we receive feedback like this, it gladdens our hearts.

I go back every year to attend a training. But - I also go b/c Mountain Home Ranch is such a joy! Suzanne and John continue to keep their family ranch thriving and to open it to their guests. I consider them guardians and friends. Go! Sleep deeply. Wander trails. Listen to nature. Eat yummy food. Scratch the head of a goat or horse. Support a working family farm.
