Welcome to Graduate Berkeley - where your intellectual curiosity meets your favorite place to stay. Graduate Berkeley is a five-minute walk to campus at the corner of the city stir and game day buzz. We are steps from Telegraph Avenue shops and stops. A virtual post card from its counter culture past, Graduate Berkeley resides in the historically renovated Hotel Durant, making it the most storied place around. The lobby invites nods to the arts and academia, the well-traveled local and Berkeley's Bohemian roots. Collegiate plaids mix with a faraway but familiar feel, like a home away from home. Thousands of "Nat Geo" magazines journey across the front desk walls dressed in California gold. Curl up with a book amidst Ikat patterned easy chairs and printed velvet sofas in deep blues and burgundy with a vintage vibe. Sweeping wood floors are layered with hand-woven rugs from India, while graphic street art mixes with chinoiserie accessories offset by original mill work and moldings.

Our daughter lives in a tiny Berkeley apt. so when we visit her from the east coast, we stay at Graduate. It is close to the university, comfortable and understated. The staff is always welcoming & everything is clean.

Stayed here during a conference near Berkeley and enjoyed my visit. Front desk was flexible about logistics change, hotel had lots of character, and it’s in a central location that was easy to reach on foot from the BART transit station.

I have stayed at the Graduate for the past five years, but this visit was a disappointment. The ac was broken, so was the ceiling fan - but no one at the front desk told me even though they knew. When i asked for more towels, none arrived. All in all, they are friendly, but the place felt dingy and not worth the high price for a small room that faced a very noisy street.

Will try and use this location for all my future Cal visits, the location and service can't be beat. This is within walking distance to campus and most Berkeley restaurants/entertainment. The staff were all friendly and helpful, even remembered my name the next day! Thanks Graduate!

The Graduate in Berkeley is unmatched in terms of its proximity to campus and local favorite eateries. You get a true sense of the student experience (or you get to re-live great memories if you are an alum) by staying here. The staff was warm and extremely helpful. Being able to grab a drink or snack at Henry’s or have such a short walk to so many other food options (as well as campus) make this a must stay place during your visit to Berkeley. In addition, after so many hotels looking and feeling the same, the Graduate in Berkeley was such a cozy and welcoming experience.

Lovely place but noisy, parking challenging and unsafe neighborhood. I love the rooms and the public areas of the hotel but the security is lacking in an unsafe neighborhood. I was accosted twice one block away by a homeless man.

Homeless sleeping out of my bedroom door, second time in a row it happens to me. Apart from that everything fine, good location and clean but it is not desirable at all to wake up early in the morning to leave the hotel and having Simone sleeping right in your door when you open it

albertogutierrezcid, Thank you for your review. I'm so sorry to hear there was someone sleeping in the hallway, that is the first I'm hearing of something like this and will look into it right away. We close and lock our doors at night and have an associate walking the floors throughout the night, I apologize if that is something we've missed. I assure you what you described is not a regular occasion. Thank you for letting us know, we will continue to monitor our protocols to ensure something like this doesn't happen again. Best, Christine General Manager

When I see the ratings for this hotel, I'm forced to reach one of two conclusions. Either most of the reviewers are shameless shills, or the reviewers' standards are so low that they'd give a barnyard 4 stars. First, this place is filthy. No qualifiers - just plain filthy. See the picture of the hair on the tile above the bathtub. Second, despite not mentioning it anywhere, the only cooling currently working comes from roll-in air conditioners. It was like having a cement mixer for a roommate. Third, the parking is a joke - $35.00 per night, small spaces, and not much security. Fourth, the elevator belongs in a horror movie. Imagine every creepy castle sound effect - then imagine yourself enclosed in a very small, very noisy box. Fifth, the rooms are minisule. I know that is a function of the ancient building, but the massive furniture and decor exacerbates the claustrophobia. Last, with one exception, the staff was generally indifferent. One gentleman behind the desk was kind enough to move us to a room without the hair on the bathroom wall. Honestly, unless they do an immense about of work, stay anywhere but here.

TLJ4, Thank you for providing feedback from your recent stay. I am truly sorry there were cleanliness challenges in your room, that is unacceptable and I am truly sorry for that. For the facility you described, we are a historic building which means the size, shape of our guest rooms, hallways and elevators are more unique, I am sorry this was not to your liking. For the cooling system in your room, I'm happy to report that we are upgrading our heating and cooling system, by the Summer of 2022, all of our guestrooms will function off a heating and cooling system, I am sorry this caused an inconvenience to you during your visit. Please reach out to me directly for your next visit to Berkeley, I would be happy to see to the details of your stay. I believe we can offer a better experience than what you described and I'd like an opportunity to do so, cmcdermott@graduateberkeley.com. Best, Christine General Manager

I booked online at what I thought was the Graduate website, as I only book directly through hotel sites. Upon checkin, they insisted on charging me again. When I spoke to Andrea, who was not kind and seemed annoyed by my questions, she did tell me that parking would be comped and that she believed I ended up using a 3rd party website. When we arrived to park, I was told by Andrea that the parking lot might be filled and we could park at a local garage. After checking out this morning, I noticed a third charge from the hotel yesterday bringing the total charges currently on my card to $1426.71 for two nights in a standard queen room. The room was also very cold as the window unit heater had a large gap between the window. My experience staying at the Hotel Shattuck Plaza have always been AMAZING and this is the hotel in Berkeley that I recommend.

This expensive but unrenovated, crumbling "hotel" has only one thing going for it, location, as it's adjacent to UC Berkeley. It received a completely cosmetic "makeover" a few years ago - new wallpapers, paint, some furniture. However, the HVAC and plumbing are decades old and don't work properly. The ancient steam heating system, with radiators, makes the rooms an unbearable 80 degrees during the night and freezing during the day. We spent one miserable night there last week for our daughter's swearing-in ceremony with her class from the law school. Went home dirty, as there was no cold water in the shower - only scalding hot water that we could not turn off. When we called in the morning to ask for this to be fixed, we were told there is no maintenance staff until late morning. We tried to have a meal in the "lobby" and were chased out by someone claiming the lobby was reserved for a meeting. Altogether, we recommend that adults should stay anywhere but in this overpriced hostel.

S0CalF00die, We appreciate your feedback. I'm so sorry to hear you had challenges with the facilities. Being a historic hotel has it's perks but we understand it can create challenges. I'm happy to report that we are upgrading our heating and cooling system, by the Summer of 2022, all of our guestrooms will function off a heating and cooling system, not provided by a radiator. We think this will allow guests to better regulate the temperature throughout the day. I apologize that you did not have a comfortable night sleep. Please reach out to me directly for your next visit to Berkeley, I would be happy to see to the details of your stay. I believe we can offer a better experience than what you described and I'd like an opportunity to do so, cmcdermott@graduateberkeley.com. Best, Christine General Manager
