I absolutely love staying at the Riu properties and would definitely come back. My only issues with this visit was paying for an ocean view room only to have a view of the top of a building. I was told we’d have things upgraded as well due to celebrating our anniversary and didn’t. There aren’t very many bars which left the one pool with a bar very crowded. We ran across a few people that had hospital visits from using the water slides and their skin splitting open so we opted not to utilize the water park. Especially since they told us they had to pay out of pocket for their injuries incurred on the property. There was a horrible smell near our room. Im assuming it was from the food being disposed of. Rooms were very clean as usual. Great entertainment. Lots of pools. No bar service while dining at this location. Not sure if it’s all of their locations now.

Place of rest, relaxation and top class entertainment. Room was cleaned everyday with fresh linen and towels replaced. Staff were super friendly, courteous and helpful. Dining service was awesome, always asking if we were ok. Pandemic had no negative impact on vacation.

We have just returned from our 2 week stay at the Riu Montego Bay with mixed feelings about our visit. We had been waiting for a long time for a lovely relaxing holiday away as a couple in the sunshine to recharge our batteries, however it wasn’t quite what we expected. The advertising, details and some of the pictures that TUI put out there are simply quite false in many ways. Yes it is an adult only hotel but our thoughts were it is more of a club 18-30 party hotel. (We are not an old couple, myself 50 and my husband 57) Yes we like a good time and yes we like to party in moderation but not to the extreme of how the hotel was and as have already said was ready to go away to relax and unwind. For our first week it was extremely busy, very very loud, lots of Americans just going for the weekend to party, being extremely loud and some quite rude, we knew them we had obviously chosen the wrong hotel for the ambiance and vibe that we had expected by what we had been receptor is by TUI, however we still made the most of our time and did enjoy our stay as we found a nice spot at the far end of the beech for some piece and quite and away from everyone playing their own music louder than the next person not to mention on top of the music around the pool areas, personally we found this annoying and quite ignorant! So as for the hotel itself: Check in : On checking in it was pretty quick, but we did arrive before the TUI bus as we arranged a private transfer with with TagJamaica, which was an excellent service and would highly recommend. We asked for a quite room location on a high floor, we didn’t really get the exact but was on the 2nd floor of block 7 over looking the garden, pools and had a side sea view. Rooms: The room we had was very spacious with 2 double beds and a sofa with ample storage space. The bathroom was large with his and hers sinks and a lovely walk in shower Service: The service was a bit hit and miss especially in some areas - the room was cleaned daily but if you wanted fresh bedding this had to be booked through the Riu app. The bathroom wasn’t really cleaned that well and the toilet wasn’t cleaned! If you wanted anything extra again you had to book through the Riu app, as in water ect…on a couple of days we had no towels and had to ring reception for them. Food/drink: There are a few restaurants, we mainly ate in the Chinese as found the food really nice and the service we had from one of the waiters, Jade, was excellent. The food in the main restaurant was okay not the best tho and service a bit slow with drinks. Breakfast was probably the best in there. We tried to go into the Italian and asked if we could have a seat in a corner near the window but was quite rudely told we couldn’t sit there as those tables were set for 4 people, this wasn’t an issue in the main restaurant or Chinese! As we spent most of our time at the beach we used the beach bar and was certainly well looked after by Amanda who knew just what we wanted and we had some pretty nice strong drinks done for us, not like at the other bars. Entertainment: We weren’t too fussed about seeing the shows every night but what we did see was excellent. The animation team were great and although we didn’t get involved in much, they always went out their way to come and chat. Beach: So, yes, the beach…very disappointed and not at all what we expected for a Caribbean island having been to other islands before. A man made beach quite rocky and Shingly in places, lots of seaweed, more so in our 2nd week, the water was okay but again because of seaweed it wasn’t that inviting to go in, plus not clear under foot as you went further in. The gym: As very regular gym goers, another reason we chose the hotel was that the gym looked brilliant…absolute pants…never opened on time, very very small with hardly any equipment…signs to say no more than 7 persons in at any time…wasn’t monitored and sometimes capacity was as much as 16!! Wasn’t able to clean equipment down as often no sanitation available. I’m sure some will say the gym issue to be trivial but to us it was big! Sellers: We didn’t mind the guys rowing up and down the beach, they are there to make a living, it was fun speaking to them and bartering with them for a bargain. Airplane noise: We knew the hotel was close to the airport but it was constant with planes going over. Overall: Overall we did have a nice time away from everything but if you are looking for peace tranquility and relaxing then Riu Montego Bay is not really the place to go however if you want to party party party then yes it is…would we visit Jamaica again…at first we said no but yes I think we would but definitely not back to the Riu Montego Bay!!

Response from RIU Hotels and Resorts, Owner at Hotel Riu Montego Bay
Responded 1 week ago
Dear Cou1964, Thank you for choosing Riu and for sharing your review. It is great to find that you appreciated the room´s cleanliness and the entertainment team´s attentive service! On the other hand, as we are committed to provide excellent services to our guests, it is truly disappointing to learn that we did not live up to the standards that you expected from us and that some aspects of your stay overshadowed your experience. We are concerned to read that you may have felt uncomfortable due to the behavior of other guests and that you felt disturbed by the loudly played music. We want everyone to have fun, however we do expect our visitors to be considerate and respect our internal guidelines. We are sorry this is not always the case. Your comments will be shared with the corresponding department in order to improve our services and despite the inconveniences we would love to have another chance to welcome you in one of our Worldwide premises to give you the stay you were hoping for. Nice wishes, Hotel Riu Montego Bay Online Reputation Manager
