8th visit to Jamaica; 2nd time at the Riu Montego Bay, and previous guest at the neighboring Riu Reggae. I’m sad to say we won’t be staying at the Riu Montego Bay property again. Mostly due to the guests rather than the property and staff. We like to have fun, but we encountered the most uncivilized, inconsiderate guests during our week at this resort than in any of our other travels — ever, anywhere in the world! Since our last stay, they renovated the rooms and completely changed the pool area from a huge beautiful lagoon pool to five rectangular pools. That was kind of a bummer, but after seeing the debauchery that occurred there: People nearly drowning in the pool at the foam party in the activity pool — seriously, not exaggerating — we watched from the sidelines as a lifeguard pulled out an incoherent guest from the pool after her girlfriend pulled her out from under the water by her hair for at least three laps around the pool. On a different day, the pool with the swim-up bar had to close earlier than usual. With five separate pools, there are still pools to use when one is unavailable. We hung out at the beachfront pool nearest villa 5, which was the most relaxed, tame pool. We requested a room change because we booked an oceanfront room to enjoy the sound of the waves lapping the beach and the amazing Jamaican tree frogs and crickets at night. I couldn’t hear it over the constant music blasting from the balcony next to us. I appreciate that they moved us. Re-packing and re-unpacking was annoying, but worth it to escape that ridiculousness. We tried to move to the Negril property, but we would have been moving from an oceanfront to a garden view and would have had to pay for the rooms at the Negril property and then try to get a refund through Jet Blue Vacations for the unused nights at the Montego Bay property. I didn’t see that playing out well, so we endured our stay. Feedback on the resort staff… The activities and entertainment team was AMAZING - we loved them! They were engaging with all of the guests, and made rounds each morning, walking down the beach and back through the pool areas, talking to the guests. In the evening before the shows, they were walking through the audience, mingling with the guests. We really appreciated that and got to learn a little about a few of them through that experience. Gabrielle at the pool bar was attentive and friendly, knew our drinks, and we never had to wait for service. She took great care of us! She had a genuine Jamaican smile (which was also my favorite drink!) Horace at breakfast service was absolutely wonderful. Genuine smile and attentive service. Jahmarie at breakfast was also super attentive, professional and provided great service. Kudos to the chef at Pepe’s (jerk chicken stand): A guest tried to jump the line in front of me because she “just wanted a piece of chicken” He told her “we don’t work like that”. Thank you chef! Even though she was trying to act all nice to you, you did right by the rest of us who had been standing in line for quite some time. Front desk attendant - First impression of the resort. It was disappointing to not even receive a smile or a welcome. Maybe she wasn’t a morning person - we arrived around 10:00 am, before the welcome drinks were offered, and a smile would have been nice. She had the same demeanor when we checked out a week later. She took our room and towel cards and basically all that she said to me was “where is the other person in the room?” so she could cut off his wristband. No “have a safe trip home” or “thank you for staying with us”. But I do appreciate the gentleman at the front desk who helped me when we changed rooms. He seemed empathetic of my request and did what he could to help us get into another room. The waterslides were great fun - we had as much fun watching people come down them as our husbands did acting like big kids running up and sliding down over and over again. They had much fun! If you are sensitive to second-hand smoke, this is not the resort for you. It is EVERYWHERE. Balconies, poolside, beach, in the area for shows at night, next to you, in front of you and behind you. There’s no escaping it. The resort has designated smoking areas, but they are not enforced. There is smoke flowing in the air from morning until night. I woke up at 7:00 Sunday morning to sit on the balcony and it was in the air. You can’t get a break from it.…
