YHA Helvellyn is a traditional hostel in a unique location - 963ft up the third highest mountain in England, in the most beautiful national park in the UK! It is an ideal base for starting your adventure and the perfect place for peace, quiet and easy access to scenic landscapes for walking holidays, activity breaks and school trips. The hostel is good for mountaineers and walkers with the Helvellyn range literally on the doorstep. Mountain bikers will also be entertained with the longest downhill ride in the country from summit of the mountain! In the winter months there is a ski slope with a drag lift 40 minutes walk (or ski) away from the hostel and we are the closest accommodation to some of England’s greatest snow and ice climbing. There is also plenty to do for those that wish to relax or have children with them, with plenty of low level and less strenuous walking starting right from the front door!

Stayed for two nights and it’s the perfect hostel - great location, staff fantastic and facilities spot on. Top tip - bring a swimming costume for a refreshing dip in the beck behind the hostel, about 30m upstream are two beautiful pools - perfect for s post walk dip!

Review collected in partnership with YHA (England & Wales)
Our first time at a YHA - stayed here with my wife and 2 kids (8 and 5) and would absolutely recommend it. All the staff were totally awesome, so kind and really spoiled kids. The landpod's were really cool to stay in. Inside there is a small L shaped bench (for sitting / dumping stuff on) and a double bunk bed which was pretty comfortable. Certainly more comfortable than an inflatable bed! Very duvets and pillows are provided along with bedding. There is also a fire pit and they supply you with a large bag of logs and fire starter kit. You need to take your own cooking stuff if you want to cook outside otherwise there is the communal kitchen and the bar food is also very nice and good value. Great place and lovely staff - the manager and 2 female staff make a great team! :)

We stayed one night in the pods. The pods are situated next to the main hostel with their own fire pit. Scenic location. Beds are cosy for two sharing. Food and facilities are good and clean. Steve (manager) and staff very helpful and supportive when some of our party got lost on the hills Thanks Steve

YHA Helvellyn was a great base for a walking trip. It is very secluded in a beautiful area but with all the facilities you might need (3 meals a day including packed lunch available on site as well as a bar and delicious cakes). The bathrooms and rooms were extremely clean and at a very good price. The staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable of the local area. Bit trickier to get to without a car with a half hour walk up to the hostel from Glenridding - but nothing we weren't warned of in advance!

Amazing location for walkers at the base of Helvellyn. Fabulous views. Try the new landpods where you can bring dogs who are also welcome in the hostel communal areas. Great food and bar/cafe. The hostel hosts are incredibly friendly and welcoming. Thanks for our wonderful stay. Only slight blip is I wasn't massively keen on the unisex bathrooms and the tiny shower cubicles - recently refurbished - difficult to keep your clothes and towels dry - but I guess you can't have it all!
