I went in the hostel with a friend of mine on july. The hostel is lovely, nice and clean. There is a fancy lounge where relax and play board games, very clean toilets and showers. It's very cheap as well! The only few things not quite right are the absence of a wifi connection, that with the complete absence of... More

The location may appeal but the hostel itself is shabby and run down. Some of the furniture such as the sofas were so old, I have honestly seen better stuff at the council dump (see photo). Shower facilites are extremely basic with no space for belongings whilst you shower. Food service is very basic - no choice of menu or... More

Although this YHA seems to be ideal from a location perspective (being right at the foot of Helvellyn) the hostel itself seems to be worn, tired and run down. We only stopped there for one night as we passed through but felt like the place could have done with a bit of money spending on it. Toilet seats were broken... More

Spent 2 nights camping here in a gorgeous little spot by the river with full use of the hostel facilities which was amazing and soooo cheap. It was a Bank Holiday weekend so quite busy which wasn't a problem for us (camping outside) but can't comment on how quiet it was within the hostel. The staff were great - so... More

A great, simple hostel to stay in if you plan to go up Helvellyn. It is lovely and quiet. The lounge furniture is showing its age though and nearly sucked me up. Well equipped kitchen, massive saucepans! The hostel and kitchen were kept very clean too. Nice beers after a long walk too.

Having just returned from the Lake District I wanted to share what a fantastic stay myself and my four walking friends had at YHA Helvellyn. As regular uses of YHA's we were no strangers to the no frills/budget accommodation that you get but yet again we were impressed by the cleanliness, food and warm friendly welcome that we received from... Do not book this hostel if you want anything other than to be part way up a mountain... As you'll be taking a bed for those who love to be out of the way It's an old sadly third hostel... But who cares man it's part way up a mountain and it quiet, pretty, remote... Simply wonderful Had breakfast was... More

I stayed at the YHA Hevellyn as part of a group of eight and we all had one room to ourselves. We found the room to be clean and tidy and bedding all fine and clean. The room however was a bit hot (especially with eight grown men in it). I'd imagine during hot spells it could get very very hot.... More

At a £100 a night for a room this hostel is no bargain and the decor, facilities, nose and cleanliness are disappointing for that price. However, the location is amazing so if you want to walk and are happy sitting in a tired bar at night then this could be place for you. Twenty years ago I would have loved... More

Our 7th night on the Lands End to John O'Groats cycle trip.YHA Helvellyn was a last minute choice after reviewing our LEJOG route - Glenridding was better placed to get to Dumfries than our original choice in Keswick, although it did mean climbing up the Kirkstone Pass on loaded bikes - and then to be faced with a further 2...
