Beautiful property! The rooms are nothing special but clean and comfortable. The real sell here is the location -- you are literally a 1 minute walk across the street from Petra, allowing you to be one of the first in line in the morning (get your tickets ahead of time). It also has a really nice assortment of shops in the hotel. Staff is great - so nice and accomodating.

Dear Chevalchic, Thank you very much for taking the time to share your very positive feedback with us. We are delighted that you found our rooms clean and comfortable, which is the general impression of most of our guests and we are happy to be able to deliver a high level of cleanliness. Our esteemed guests usually praised us about the comfort and the cleanliness of the rooms and we take the pride of the consistently high performance of our great housekeeping team. We were also pleased to read that you consider the hotel staff great, nice and accommodating. We are blessed, indeed, of having a devoted team that works hard to deliver daily an exceptional guest experience. We would like to thank you one more time for choosing Movenpick Resort Petra for your stay and are looking forward to welcoming you back again! With kind regards, Tatyana Atanasova Hotel Manager

We had a very disappointing experience. We weren't sure what to expect travelling through Jordan as a gay couple, but were pleasantly surprised by our experience at other hotels over our travel to Joran. We had a terrible experience at the Mövenpick and are not sure what to attribute it to. The list of things that went wrong: 1 - The bartender at the bar wouldn't give us ice cubes to bring back to the room, he said it was only possible to do so through room service 2 - after 45 minutes room service still hadn't brought ice to the room 3 - bartender then yelled at us for coming back and asking for ice again 4 - Pool area smelled of sewage 5 - Room full of dirt 6 - Furniture in room all banged up - mirror in bathroom with massive chips 7 - Was told rooftop restaurant was fully booked so we couldn't get a reservation, went up ourselves to see - only 2 tables were full 8 - waiter argued with us over the wine he had ordered, he wouldn't accept that we were right and continued to argue with us for the duration of the night 9 - No waiter out at the pool area for hours 10 - Happy hour only available at the bar, not outside by the pool as suggested This was really substandard service. There is no way they should advertise themselves as a 5 star or luxury hotel. This was basic - 3 star service and accommodation at best. We left feeling as though the staff are lazy and in it for themselves. We never once felt like guests. If you are looking for something nice - look for some of the newer adventure style accommodations maybe. This is not the place for something nice. The only upside is the location to the visitor centre. Petra is so incredibly, it's a shame this hotel was such a disappointment.

Dear Mr. Scott McVittie, Thank you for sharing your detailed feedback with us. First of all, I would like to kindly assure you that there is not even a sign of any discrimination in our hotel and we are used to welcoming a lot of gay couples who have never been dissatisfied and have never blamed the staff in laziness. That's why we are preferred by the gay couple's hotel because our team is respectful, discrete and sincere. Regarding the following comment "Happy hour only available at the bar, not outside by the pool as suggested", please be kindly advised that the happy hour has never been suggested out of the bar. On all the brochures and posters it's announced that the happy hour happens between 4 pm and 6 pm in Al Maqa'ad bar only. I was personally very pleased to find that on both days of your stay with us you have enjoyed the happy hours by ordering drinks in our splendid bar. Regarding the Rooftop restaurant comment, we know the interest in our very famous venue is tremendous and that's why Al Ghadir Rooftop Garden works only with preliminary reservations. If all the tables have been already booked in advance for exact timing, we are unable to book and confirm a table even if at the time of your booking only 2 of the tables have been occupied. If the actual reservation takes place in the next 15 minutes or half an hour, we still need to keep the table available for the guest who booked it in advance, because the guests are used to enjoy their dinner along with the sunset and the amazing Oriental ambiance for no less than 2 hours. However, it was really delightful to find that regarding the bills assigned to your room on both days of your stay you managed to have dinner at the Rooftop restaurant and to enjoy the best Arabic grill in Petra. I am truly glad that our devoted restaurant staff succeeded to find you a table, regardless of the busy booking situation. About your remark that the room was full of dirt, please kindly specify the details because we are usually praised as a very clean and tidy hotel and known to be extremely precise with the guest rooms hygiene. About the other comments, unfortunately, we were unable to properly investigate because there is no record of any complaints during your stay and we were unable to confirm it, neither to justify it. While I wish you had a better experience, it is feedback like this that we learn from and use to improve. We work hard to deliver an exceptional guest experience, and it's apparent in this case that we fell short. If you give us a chance to earn back your trust, I can assure you that we will do our best to give you the great hotel experience that so many of our guests have grown so fond of. Sincerely, Tatyana Atanasova Hotel Manager

Short review: This isn't a "bad" hotel; they'd really have to try to make it terrible given the cost of staying here. It's just very mediocre for the price and prestige. If you're looking to splash out, do so at the Dead Sea; don't waste your money here. Long review: My friend and I spent 10 days in Jordan in a mix of budget, midrange and luxury accommodation. The luxury was one night at the Kempinski on the Dead Sea (which was amazing) followed by two nights at the Movenpick (which was more expensive but inferior in every way). The best thing about the Movenpick is its location - don't underestimate how amazing it will feel to drag yourself out of the Siq at 7pm after ten hours of hiking round Petra and know your hotel is literally just across the road. The next best thing is the beautiful lobby and courtyard. Unfortunately, this is where the nice decor stops. Take the steps down from the lobby to the swimming pool and it'll feel like you're in the back corridors of a shopping mall looking for the toilets (by the way, I assume the pool unheated, because when I went to check it out it was deserted). Upstairs it's ugly hotel carpet all the way; the room had a nice frame round the mirror but nothing else stood out. The bathrooms are quite dated; I'm not so precious as to complain at having to climb into the tub to take a shower, but did they have to screw a large metal doorstop into the floor *exactly* where you're going to lay the bath mat for when you step out again? We had the buffet breakfast and dinner (twice each) and they were nice but not blow-you-away amazing. The dinner could have done with another hot vegetarian main; if you don't like the pasta or soup that night your choices are basically carbs or salad (good, but not that appealing when it's cold). Staff were really hit and miss. Like at our first breakfast they came round with coffee, but on the second day it was very much 'help yourself or you're not getting anything'. For our second dinner I couldn't find the free water dispenser; I was sure there'd been one the night before, but I went round twice and couldn't see it. I asked a member of staff if water was included and he just pursed his lips and shook his head at me with an expression on his face like he had more important things to attend to than mere guests. Only after asking a second waiter was it clarified that bottled water wasn't included but the dispenser stuff was - only then we had to persuade him that we really couldn't find it. Eventually another guy brought us each a glass; I could have drunk four times that much but it was too much hassle to ask for more. The weirdest staff experience was check in - the guy took our names and then started asking us what was included in our booking. Er, surely you can see? Surely you should be telling us when and where dinner is served rather than asking us if we booked it? The weirdest thing though was that I asked when the Petra Museum (which is right opposite the hotel) was open until, and he started giggling. I don't mean he laughed awkwardly and admitted he didn't know, I mean he was completely overcome with the giggles, and when I pushed for an actual answer he was too out of breath with giggling to say anything. Just .. weird. The Kempinski had whipped out a map and gone over the opening times of all their pools and restaurants, and this guy couldn't even give one time? It turned out that the new museum had literally just been opened by the crown prince (as in, that morning), so he could have been forgiven for not knowing, but why not just say that? We then walked over to our bags and hung around a bit waiting for help, but we were completely ignored. We gave up and dragged them over to the lift ourselves; Mr Giggles must have seen us, but he didn't offer to help. It wasn't until we were exiting the lift that a man with his hands already full with other tasks saw us and insisted on helping. Again - I'm capable of carrying my own stuff, but this is a so-called luxury hotel. At all three of the budget guesthouses we stayed at in Jordan, somebody took our bags to our room while somebody else got us a free drink. What exactly am I paying extra for if the Movenpick can't even offer that?

I was very pleasantly surprised with Movenpick after reading the bad reviews here before my trip. Chose this hotel as I am travelling with my elderly mom, so I need a hotel very close to Petra for the convenience. Movenpick's location is unbeatable, but the hotel itself is so lovely with beautiful deco, large comfortable room and excellent services from all the staffs at reception, restaurants, door man, etc. Almost perfect stay, my only minor complain was the room service which took very long (almost 1 hour), instead of 25 min as advised, but the long awaited pizza was really delicious.

Located across the road from the Petra visitor centre and entrance, the most amazing thing about this hotel is how, with such a high turnover of guests, it maintains such a high standard - spotless decor, attention to detail and friendly attentive service. There is a complimentary minibar! But before you get too excited, it’s soft drinks only and you’ll need a second mortgage if you want a beer. The roof top restaurant is well worth a visit - BBQ food cooked to perfection, well presented and served in a wonderful setting. Only downside (although it seems common throughout Jordan) is the expectation of a tip on top of the 12% service charge added to the bill!
