Iberostar Waves Punta Cana garners mixed feedback, with many guests praising its cleanliness, lively atmosphere, and breadth of amenities, including multiple pools and dining options. While some visitors appreciate the modern renovations and find the rooms to be updated and well-kept, others encounter dated decor and maintenance issues. The entertainment often keeps the mood upbeat, although the music volume can be too intense for some. Service experiences range from commendable attentiveness to frustrating inconsistency. Opinions on value also vary, reflecting both satisfaction and concerns over cost.

This medium-size resort is very nice, clean & well maintained. Our room was clean, had great soundproofing & the shower always had hot water and good pressure. Daily cleanings. Maybe the room needed a dresser, but that's all the wrong I can think of. We were at a 3 min walk to the restaurant, 3 min walk to the beach, and max 10 min to the tennis courts. It felt very safe. This is not a party resort, nor a resort very kid-oriented, but we very much enjoyed the relaxed vibe it had, it was perfect for a couple looking for tranquility.

The beach was cleaned daily of seaweed. There were nice little waves all the time we were there, enough place for the children to play in the sand and for people to walk without being too near the people sunbathing. You can walk at least one hour one way if you go either left or right. The chair reservation game is strong at this resort. At 6h45 there is almost no spot left on the front row, at 7h30 you have choices on the second and 3rd rows, but past 9h30, good luck finding a spot in the shade. The first day we arrived around 10ish and had trouble finding a spot (and we were just two people). The part of the beach where the chairs are could use a good cleanup, there are cigarette butts, bits of plastic, various big and small debris, especially around the trees. No service at the chairs, but someone passes from time to time to collect glasses and plates. There are lots of people selling stuff on the beach, but the number looked regulated, and they didn't bother you if you just said no with a smile.

We didn't really use the pools, but they looked clean and the chair reservation seemed way less intense.

The main con was the food. Breakfast was very good, but for a vegetarian (forget being vegan), the rest of the meals got very repetitive fast and the lack of non-animal protein was disappointing. There were even some times where it was frustrating, such as the Mexican night where all the beans had meat in it. There is enough place in the buffets to make a small section for vegan/vegetarians, especially as most of the time, the same food was offered in two different spots in the same restaurant. The 'vegan' platter at the Marimba restaurant was a joke, none of the things on the menu were served to us. Instead we got served boiled carrots, a bowl of pickles, half-mashed potatoes with butter in them and cheese sandwiches. Please don't put it on the menu if you don't provide it. Ibero, you have enough resorts, you can easily hire a vegetarian/vegan chef who could create easy and delicious recipes for all of your resorts. You cannot just take the animal protein off the plate and call it a day.

The service at the restaurants à la carte could improve. Every night we went, the server got the order wrong (asked for bruschettas, got something else, asked for the spicy tacos, got the non spicy ones, etc). The servers did not seem assigned to tables, so each night 3-4 different servers would ask us if we wanted to drink something, had we ordered or not, it was a bit confusing. The food is slightly better than the buffets but not by much. Good thing is there is no complicated reservation system, you go whenever you want. If you go before 7 PM there is no wait, after that, maybe a little wait, but it was never bad and we went easily to every restaurant we wanted to try.

People with allergies might have trouble as half of the food at the buffets is not identified and utensils are shared within sections (meaning you have 6 types of fruits on display, but only 3 utensils, or 20 desserts, but only 10 utensils). Sometimes food that was supposed to be cold was hot, and food that was supposed to be hot was cold. There was a good fruit and veg offer, we didn't get sick, but again, a big lack of non-animal protein.

Waiters and receptionists all look a bit like they don't want to be there, but we found help easily whenever we needed it. You will need to dust up your Spanish tough, as the vast majority of people don't speak English. It wasn't a problem for us.

The resort took a great environmental step in serving all food and drinks in reusable material, they had water dispensers everywhere, and this is very much appreciated!

All and all, very good resort, only needs a beach cleanup and an upgrade on vegetarian/vegan food, and they are set for the stars.

Travelling in early November 2024, we are a group of 12 people.
Common areas very clean (few places to smoke), large and beautiful interior garden.

Room: a little old, but functional, large, well soundproofed, no door that closes hard, because they are equipped with a cylinder, very comfortable semi-firm mattress, air conditioning works well (digital), fridge filled every day (liqueurs and beers), for water you have to fill a container with filtered water, this avoids all plastic bottles.

Resto: No reservation for à la carte restaurants (no limit), during our visit, there was always room, French and Italian are the best, for the evening buffet there are themes. The food is good, but the recurring complaint is that often it is lukewarm. Proper house wine. Menu in 4 languages via QR code or paper.

Beach: Very wide, great walk possible, lots of palapas and trees (same for the pool), quite clean, weirdly we can get out of the buffet food with glass plates! For towels, contrary to what I read, there is a check with room number, little seaweed and picked up mechanically.

Atmosphere: for our group the worst was the evening shows, we do better at home, even the animators distort. For the beach and pool, activities are varied, and quiet places are available. Internet functional everywhere. Have google translate, as some staff members do not understand English well and they nod that they understand.

In short, a beautiful stay, a beautiful site, room everywhere, the members of our group all had the same opinion as us (my wife and I).

The infrastructure of the place is very good in general, the good points are the rooms and the proximity it has between the pools, the children's center, the beach and the dining rooms. The bad spots or to improve, the pool sector is very slippery (we saw several falls), the dining rooms do not have air conditioning and the elevators need more maintenance. On the other hand, it has activities for adults and entertainment for children at the Star Camp where my children had a great time, with a very adequate and safe infrastructure for them. A total negative point is the thematic restaurants, they were not worth it either for the food, or for the attention received. They were unique menus that could perfectly be consumed in the buffet dining room, do not waste time booking them even for the attention that is very bad and slow. A plus is the snack stand that had everything to keep you in the pool or on the beach, with a strategic location between them and an assortment of snacks for all tastes.

I would never recommend this place to anyone nor will I ever go back. They claim you don’t need to make reservations for the restaurants then when you try to get into the restaurants they tell you time and time again they are already booked for the night and you end up stuck eating the garbage food at the buffet. I’m fine with eating buffet food for breakfast and lunch but to have to also eat cafeteria style average food for dinner when you pay a lot of money for all inclusive is just unacceptable. I didn’t drink the water and still ended up very sick along with everyone else in my group. You can’t even use the water to brush your teeth. The filtered water stations around the resort would be helpful but half of them caused people in my group to get shocked. We had to cautiously hold our cup directly under the water spout without touching any of the walls around the station to avoid getting electrocuted. There were also cockroaches in our room, our sheets smelled, and half of the people in our group did not have working air conditioning in their rooms. I am never someone to leave bad reviews or even take the time to leave reviews but I felt the need to leave this review to prevent other people from having the same experience and wasting their money. I have been home for 3 days and am still sick and have not gone back to work.

Dear Kara, Thank you for notifying us of your concerns related to your recent stay with us. We are sorry to hear that your experience has not lived up to your expectations.  Firstly, we would like to apologize for any discomfort you may have faced during your stay at our establishment. Regarding your comments on our restaurants, please allow us to explain that only one or two restaurants for each hotel need reservations. We remain regretful for not managing to provide this information to you properly. We understand your frustration and feel very sorry to hear about your illness. Indeed, at our establishment, tap water is not consumable but is used for other necessities like showering, flushing the toilet, etc. At Iberostar, we have a strong compromise to the environment, and as our Wave of Change movement exposes, we have eliminated single-use plastic, which includes bottled water. Instead, we have a purification and potabilization system under the proper protocols and regulation policies. We have no similar reports of other guests getting sick, but you can be sure we will be investigating this situation thoroughly. Furthermore, your comments on our water stations are concerning, we have immediately shared this comment with our team in order to analyze and solve this matter promptly. Our guest's well-being is one of our top priorities, thank you for letting us know.  Your words are of great importance for us since they motivate us to improve, please rest assured they are being taken seriously. We hope you get well soon. Kind regards, Online Reputation Manager Iberostar Punta Cana

I visited the hotel with my wife in 2008, we had a good experience, so much so that on our return to Punta Cana, this time accompanied by our children, grandparents and brothers, (10 people) we did not hesitate to stay at it again. the Iberostar Punta Cana hotel. The hotel has been closed for renovations and has recently opened, about 15 days before our arrival, well, we arrived at the hotel on Saturday at 10:30 p.m., they assigned us the 3 rooms (one per family) and we are going to settle in, dirty rooms, with paint stains everywhere, mirrors, glass, toilet, shower screen... foul smell of pipes, we had to call the reception to change the sheets because they were black so we could put the baby to bed. the children after such a long trip, the floors full of mud balls, but the ringing of the bell was caused by the toilet in our room, which was very dirty, full of urine for days and clogged on top of it. That night we notified and of course no one could come and we used the pool bathrooms, the 4 people who were in the room, the next day they came to unclog it, but that same night it was clogged again, and again to the pool toilets , and no one had cleaned it yet, but since it couldn't be used either, it wasn't a major problem. On Monday we contacted the reception again with some heat and demanding a change of room, but they did a more thorough inspection and everything seemed to work, so I myself took products from the cleaning service cart in the hallway and cleaned the toilet because no one He rolled up his sleeves to come and clean, (I put photos of the toilet as we found it), but on Tuesday it was clogged again and on Wednesday the room flooded due to the clogged toilet, they came to remove the water so we could take out our suitcases and, It seems that they were convinced that we needed another room after 4 days using the public toilet at the pool with 2 small children, (see gon zo so). The new room was impeccable, it seemed like we were in another hotel, exquisite cleanliness, well cared for, clean smell, it brought tears to our eyes. I don't like to be protestant and I'm quite conformist, in fact we had other minor inconveniences, which I don't even mention because I understand them to be normal. In compensation they leave us a card worth $500 in hotel services, but it turns out that when they inform us, those $500 are in the form of a discount 🤣. Come on, to enjoy the voucher you have to spend $2,000 on laundry, SPA,…. It was better that they had not given anything because they offended me more.

In short, they put us in some rooms that, as the work was finished, they assigned to the clients without even cleaning or checking them, allowing and knowing that a family with children would use the pool bathroom for 4 days. (It was clean first thing in the day but imagine what it was like at 8 in the afternoon)

I give 2 stars for the kindness of many of the workers who deserve it.

We just got back 2024/12/06, booked with Sunwing. Overall, We would recommend this resort.
Some of the biggest Pros are:
Great food, lots of variety, no shortage, and most important we didn’t get sick.
Super clean resort with both Iberstar Waves Punta Cana and Iberstar Dominicana combined and easily walkable between them. They have covered walkways from your room to the lobbies, so no umbrella is needed.
The room key is on your resort bracelet.
Great Wi-Fi throughout the resort including the beach. No need to buy a sim card as they use WhatsApp for travel rep and tour operators.
Lots of Beach shade shelters but you still need to go there by about 8am if you want to reserve a spot.
Washrooms are plentiful and clean with toilet paper always available
Clean drinking water stations are plentiful and self-serve
Casino onsite with $5 minimum Blackjack tables
Some of the Cons are:
The front lobby Concierge staff will pester every guest to attend a time share and will say you will receive $100 in resort credits. They will say things like it will only take an hour or so, and you can do it over breakfast at another better resort. We politely insisted no thanks and that we’ve done this timeshare spiel before. But we heard from other people at the resort that did it attend the timeshare that it takes over 3 hours, and they really do give you a high-pressure sales. Then the staff seems really upset with you if you didn’t buy.
The nightly shows are not very good at all. Most of them are just the entertainment staff lip syncing to recorded music. The only show we kind of enjoyed was the Magic Show.
You are kind of isolated on the resort. They do offer a free shuttle to a shopping store 10 minutes away but that store has high prices on everything. We found your better off just shopping at the resort.
Tip;
For buying any off resort tours or anything from beach vendors, you really need to negotiate with them and do not accept the first offer on anything they are selling.
For Example: We ended up booking the ½ day Dominican Explorer Quads Double Tour. (This was a fun trip ! ) We had 3 different prices for the same tour from 3 different W2M Booking reps at the resort. It started with the 1st W2M agent offering it to us for $98 US each / $196 US couple, then the 2nd W2M agent offering it to us for $85 US each / $170 US couple. We ended up paying $75 US each / $150 US couple from the 3rd W2M agent after negotiation.

Very beautiful site, very kind and welcoming staff! Among others Mignolla at the buffet and July. Renovated bedroom and bathroom. Plus a very interesting aspect, their commitment to avoiding plastic. Large glass bottles are available in the rooms and filtered water fountains on all floors to fill them. All products are in bottles that are refilled. No more small, polluting, disposable shampoo and soap containers!! Well done to Iberostar, it’s a good start.

The pro:
The weather and beach were perfect in January. The resort clears the seaweed daily, the water is warm, with just enough surf for average swimmers. Good wifi even at the beach.
The tropical landscaping is stunning and immaculate (even with flamingos and turtles in the water alongside your brunch). The coral lab on site is important and worth seeing. Kudos for being environment-friendly.
Poolside and beachside food and bars are convenient and good for the level you are paying for (this is one of four Iberostar resorts in one huge connected complex, with others at the higher end)
The nighttime live dancing is a hoot, with high energy “animadores” (think of camp counselors for adults) getting everyone out on the floor for merengue, bachata and salsa. Not to miss.
Excellent clay courts (just bring your own racquets and reserve ahead).
Cons:
Management is pulling a fast one on its promotion of “fine dining”. If you find the resort via Trip Advisor or other travel apps, you will see descriptions of four or five themed restaurants to choose from. But when you check in, you are told now you need to book dinner reservations (they refuse to allow booking before arrival) and - as many guests reported on site and in other reviews - the odds are that many will already be fully booked. If you walk over to those restaurants at dinner time, they will be half full at most. But it does not matter. It’s how they run the business: fewer meals to serve, fewer staff, less expense so more profit.
If you say you expect to be able to dine at these restaurants, you will be told that you should know better because you agreed to these terms “when you filled out the application” to stay there. Seriously. An application? If you push and cajole, they will give in a little. But it gives off a bad vibe.
With all the positives about the beautiful beach noted above, if your idea of relaxing on the beach is peace and serenity this is not your place. The comfortable lounge chairs under thatch umbrellas are ideal, but you will be elbow to elbow, and you better like reggaeton. No one will turn down their Bluetooth speaker, why dampen the party? Of course everyone is very friendly and you’re free to join in and meet people. If you go with that spirit, you’ll enjoy it.

Over great experience. We caught up the best weather blue skies every day.
Drinks- decent but could use more alcohol and less sugary.
Clean room, the ladies are doing a great job, make sure to tip accordingly.
The only down is that due to humidity there was a slight mouldy smell. Make sure to keep the balcony door closed at all time. AC was great.
We stayed in 5173 has a nice view and close by restaurants and pools. Renovated rooms.
Pools could be cleaner.
Food is decent and various options but repetitive. Food safety higiena could improve.
We didn’t like the sea food restaurant as the food it was too greasy.
Beach is one of the best in Bavaro, the seaweed was cleaned regularly by the resort. So that’s a big plus.
Staff is very friendly and helpful. Braulio was top same as Mercedes.
The resort was quiet.
Overall I recommend the resort.

My family and I went a weeks ago and had an amazing vacation despite Hurricane Fiona. It was a 30 minutes drive from the airport and we stayed in the 2-bedroom suites on the Punta Cana side with "Star Prestige" accommodations. Check-in was seamless and we able to book 3 to 4 al carts dinners for our group of 11 with no issues. We had a welcome package when we arrived inside out room which was very nice then headed to the pool.

The hotel grounds were clean and maintained. The staff were friendly and most of them were bilingual and could speak English. The pools were clean and there were lots of beach chair availability. The pool bar gets busy but due to our "Star Presitge" status, we had access to private bars inside the main lobby as well as on the beach with private Cabana and lounge. The Dominicana resort is dircely beside the Punta Cana so we had access to both hotels and their services. The buffets were not too crowded and had an abundant of food everyday with made to order stations at breakfast, lunch and dinners. The servers were very attentive.

Day 2 the Hurricane touched down so we were in our rooms majority of the day until the storm passed. We made sure to charge our phones and stock our fridges with drinks and food as we were confined to our rooms. The power did got out multiple times throughout the night but did return shortly after. We lost 1.5 days due to storm but thankful it passed. We were provided with care pakcages in the mornings aka beverages and food to our rooms while the staff worked endlessly to clean up the grounds, pools, beaches and restaurants. Once the bars, the buffets and al carts re opened, the staff did their best to accommodate our needs.

The following day the pools, beaches and most activities were back again and the weather was cooperative and where we spend most of our days.

We tried the Mediterranean, Mexican and American a la cart restaurants but the steak house was unavailable due to the storm which was the main in we wanted to try.

The children enjoyed the kids clubs and it had a huge indoor jungle gym as well a few arcade games external and VR.

I had the most fabulous massage and highly recommend the spa/services.

The nightly entertainment was enjoyable and kid friendly for most shows. The entertainment staff were amazing.

The Casino was also fun but very smoky.

We went to Disco 6 a few nights and it was spacious.

The star Market has affordable shopping for all your needs, the Plaza Bavaro Shopping Centre and just down street headed towards the beach our street side shopping huts.

Special thanks too:
