The service was not great. The food was mediocre. The bartenders don’t really know how to make mixed drinks…they eyeball instead being accurate. The resort at one point didn’t have running water…no one was compensated for that. The staff were not very friendly.

Dear Sabrina. We thank you for sharing your opinion about your recent vacation with us, our main objective is to ensure that we continue to offer unforgettable experiences to our guests and your comments help us to do so. We appreciate the time you have taken to share your feedback and constructive feedback. We are surprised by your comment regarding the behavior of one of our waiters and we are passing on your opinion directly to the responsible management. However, we are pleased to know that the interaction with most of our team members was positive and that you felt well cared for at all times, which is our ultimate goal. In the same way, we are very sorry that you experienced the lack of hot water, but as it was explained, our office suffered a collapse and we were seriously affected. Once again we thank you for choosing our hotel for your vacation and we hope to have the opportunity to serve you again in the future. Kind regards, Marcos Castillo General manager Occidental Punta Cana.

We had a horrible experience…… 1. No running water the day we arrived until around 8pm. 2. Wait staff is slow and unmotivated to assist. 3. No wait staff around the pool and beside the swim up bar (open from 11-6pm) you have to walk to either side of the resort to find beverages. 4. Witnesses a house keeping person getting water out of turtle pond for the Moo bucket and preceded to put the mop in it. Property and beach is kept well but there is little to no shade and no umbrellas.

This was our 6th stay at Occidental Punta Cana and our 3rd time in the Royal level. We stayed in room 21-204 which had an ocean view. The room was clean and in good repair. We had hot water daily and the house keeping staff ver ygood. We always had clean towels and the fridge stocked with our facorite beverage. The food was good in the Royal restaurant and good to fair in the specialty a la cart restaurants. The Buffet continues to need work. The food temperature is an issue. Hot food is cold and cold food is warm. Little variety and food was frequently gone and not replenished. The wait staff in the buffet Royal sitting area varied from friendly to unattetnive and rude. Even had some eye rolls and sighs from one. Groundskeeping and maintenance staff needs a special mentions. Always friendly and saying hi. Kept the grounds well groomed and looking top notch. Others at the resort at the same time reported issues with water, and A/C, but we had none while there. We will likely return again.

We just got back from 6 days at this resort from May 17-22nd. It was for my husband's birthday surprise. Upon arriving, check in was slow. Not to mention the front desk staff are the first people you are greeted by, there was barely any pleasantries. Arriving to our room (block 24). We were on the 3rd floor- the elevator did NOT work.. but I have to say that the room is absolutely perfect. Its spacious, clean, bright, comfy king bed, and being on the third floor- our ceilings were like 18 feet tall with a nice oscillating fan in the middle. We had the view of the garden which also overlooked the other resort but it was perfect. The pools are endless but to give you perspective- I'm 5'5 and the deepest part of the pool was barely past my knees. It is lovely though. There's hamburger shack on top of the main pool that's open til 5am and a pizzeria that I believe is open til about 2am, Our rooms were cleaned almost regularly, but tipping does go along way. I left notes in Spanish asking for things we needed extra (water, soft drinks) and maybe 2 dollars or I left little trinkets like candy or lip gloss. There is in shower conditioner, shampoo and body gel which aren't bad at all actually, wish I had known that before travelling so I could've packed lighter lol. The lobby is gorgeous- enough seating and bar space to accommodate even a large crowd, every night there was an entertainer, we saw a saxophone player and a singer. The buffet- There wasn't many options to choose from, and its basically the same thing every day. We stuck with the fresh omelettes, a fruit smoothie and plaiintains in the morning. Lunch and dinner were roughly the same choices for both. I can't say I wasn't ever full, but definitely lacked on satisfied. A la cartes- We went to Italian, Mexican and the steakhouse. Italian was super small portioned and we felt rushed, literally were there for under 40 minutes. Mexican was tasty, and the steakhouse lacked seasoning but a good portion of steak with a tiny tiny piece of carrot, brocolli and barely a quarter potato. each meal, we went to grab a pizza after. Nightly entertainment- Enjoyable but like any resort, the same kinds. One night it was raining so they turned the theatre into a movie theatre which was kind of cute for the kids If you can't speak Spanish or slightly understand, brush up on some basics. They show you that they're annoyed that they have to speak English. The beach- beautiful, enough lounge chairs for everyone. It's not too shady though. Lucking out to find an area with the shade can be scarce. The beach is clear waters, they do work hard to keep the seaweed away. Only one day there was a lot but there was also a medium sized rainstorm the night before. There's a beach bar near by which also seconds as lunch and dinner buffet, but be sure to have clothes to put on as they may not serve you the buffet without a shirt on. PLEASE dont upgrade to Royal level or premium. I saw them waiting in the same lines as us, getting the same treatment regardless what band they had on. We experienced this at the last resort we went to (Impressive Punta Cana) so we weren't surprised when it happened at this one- Friday to Sunday is Local DR residents time. You'll see around 2-3pm, it just gets busier and more populated on Friday. This is because the residents will come with their entire family and take over. At this resort it wasn't as bad because its a more spacious resort. They'll try and cut in front of you at buffet line ups, they play their own music very loudly. The Gym- What gym? My husband went in, looked around, and left. They could use a serious upgrade. There is on site shopping inside the resort there's 3 stores with souvenirs and pharmacy type things and snacks. Just outside the resort theres a shopping centre of just the same type of things, but they are cheaper. This place could do better with firstly customer service, a smile goes a long way, more options at their buffet, larger sized portions for their a la cartes, and more shaded areas on the beach, umbrellas?? Overall, for the price we paid for 2 people and 6 days- I would not do it again. The resort is huge, lots of space to lounge, swim, relax, let me make mention that another part to making my trip was our room..... which usually wouldnt have a factor seeing that you would want to spend more time OUTSIDE your room than in it. SPF 50 is suggested, bring a good quality thermos for your drinks, tipping money, and bug spray if you're sweet skinned lol.

Lovely clean hotel but just a few fundamental things bad. One - very little shade. Two - no gas in any soft drinks so it was just horrible syrup and no sugar free drinks the whole 10 day stay. Three - staff didnt try to understand and for eg with the drinks tasted it, shrugged and said 'its ok'. Noone listening or being able to speak English became draining by about day 5

We (a group of 4 adults) arrived on May 5th for a week stay at the Occidental Punta Cana. We flew directly with WestJet from Toronto. Our flight to Punta Cana was great. We didn't have any issues....we actually arrived in Punta Cana (PC) about 30 mins earlier than scheduled! Upon arriving in PC, we cleared immigration and retrieved our luggage fairly quickly and without any issues. Our transfer from the airport to the resort was good. It took us approximately 25-30 mins to get to the resort. Upon check in, we were assisted by Leonardo who was super nice and accommodating. We were assigned 2 superior rooms - one in Building #24 (room 24108) and the other room in Building #26 (26304). Building #26 is closer to the beach, however, most if not all of the buildings are a short walk to the beach. The resort grounds are well kept and clean. The pools are all very nice and the beach was beautiful. There was minimal seaweed. The issue with the beach area is that apart from the palm trees, there is no other form of shade. The resort doesn't have umbrellas or huts. Only guests who are staying in the royal section or club rooms have a private section with huts and shaded area. Our rooms are spacious. However, the mini fridge in our room was only stocked with one - 1 litre bottle of water, 2 mini bottles of Sprite and 2 mini bottles of Coke – no beer was provided. When my sister & cousin initially checked into their room, they found a half-opened bottle of water in their mini fridge! They also did not have any beer in their mini fridge although the description of our rooms specified that there was a "mini bar" included. We had to call the Front Desk to request that beer be placed in both of our rooms. I even informed our cleaning lady and she said that she would advise her supervisor. Despite our calls to the front desk, only one of our rooms was provided with beer...make that 2 beers! For the rest of our stay, we had to keep asking our housekeeper to please stock our mini fridge with beer – for the 7 days that we were there, we only received maybe a total of 10 beers between the two rooms! The food at the El Alcaraz buffet was good but the service was brutal! Servers took long to come to your table to take your drink order. When they finally came to take your drink order, they took forever to bring you your drink or totally forget to bring them! On the 2nd night of our stay they ran out of plates! One thing that we all really liked and enjoyed was sitting at the rooftop patio just above the main lobby area at night. There is a pizzeria, bar and taco counter, all of which are open until 5am! William at the bar was amazing and really knew how to serve your drinks! We had dinner at the Italian restaurant – the food was ok, but some of our food was cold. We also ate at the Oriental restaurant – overall the food was not very good. The food was either cold or not cooked well. Our reservations for the seafood restaurant got cancelled without any explanation so we didn’t end up going. Since we had such bad experiences, we didn’t bother making reservations at the Mexican or Steakhouse. Everyone in our group had all traveled to the Dominican Republic on many occasions and without any issues. We have all visited many other resorts in other countries but this was by far the worse experience that we have experienced. The majority of the staff was not friendly, at times rude and they did not acknowledge you or seem to care about working here. Apparently, they are not being paid and something is going on with management. There are a lot of disgruntled staff! On Day 2, we were sitting in the bar area in the lobby. Staff took forever to come to our table. When one of the servers finally did, she only took my cousin’s drink order and left before we can even speak!! We had to go to the bar and order our own drinks. During our stay, it was quicker to go get our own drinks than wait around to be served. On Day 3 I had an incident with a bartender at the beach bar. I came up to the bar to order a drink and in a very rude manner she told me to form a line in order to get served! Apparently, there was a line for beer and another one for other beverages. Not sure how I was expected to know this as there are no signs nor am I a mind reader! I apologized to her and said I that wasn't aware that there were different lines as it was my 1st time at this particular bar. She basically rolled her eyes and with major attitude reiterated that there were different lines - 1 for beer and another for other beverages! There were other guests waiting for drinks who witnessed this incident. They were all appalled by her attitude and the tone of her voice. Following this incident, we spoke with a supervisor at reception and informed him of this incident. We also expressed our concerns about the resort staff. He apologized and said that he would look into it. We each paid just over $1600 to stay at the Occidental PC. We went to relax and have a stress-free vacation, not to put up with bad attitudes and have to sweet talk staff in order to get good service. We spoke with many other resort guests (from the US, Canada, South America, Mexico) and the majority expressed the same concerns as us about the staff's lack of service and negative attitudes. Another thing about this resort is that they promote timeshare. It seemed like that the only resort staff that greeted you and asked how you were finding your stay were the timeshare sale reps! To be fair, they were all very polite and respectful when you told them that you are not interested. They are not pushy at all. We honestly do not understand how they expect people to invest in this resort when the level of service is not being met. By Day 2-3, we all felt that if we were offered a refund and had the option to go home that we would all take the offer! To add salt to our wounds, on May 11th (the day before checking out), when we went to confirm our transfer to the airport, we were told that we didn’t have one! Round trip transfers were definitely included in our package and we had proof! One of the guest services reps, told us that our WestJet rep was not at the resort that day but he was able to get in touch with him via phone. When we spoke with our WestJet rep on the phone, he told us that we should have received a voucher from the driver who picked us up at the airport when we initially arrived. We told him that we were not provided with any type of voucher or information for that matter! He kept insisting that we should have received some type of voucher and eventually hung up the phone on us! At that point, I contacted my travel agent and explained the situation. They then got in touch with WestJet and gave them my cell number and advised me that a WestJet rep would send me a WhatsApp message regarding our transfer to the airport. In the meantime, we spoke with the concierge at the front lobby and one of the drivers from the transfer company told us that he would arrange to have someone pick us up on May 12th and to be at the lobby at 11am. In the morning of May 12th, we went to guest services to see if the WestJet rep was around. We were told that he wasn’t but one of the guest services reps called him from the hotel phones and I spoke with him (Winston). I explained what was going on and told him that our flight was leaving that day. He told me to get in touch with WestJet. I told him that my travel agent had already done that and that no one had contacted me. He again mentioned that we needed a voucher. To make a long story short, he told me that we basically to find our own way to the airport and hung up the phone! Shortly after I received a call from a WestJet rep (Max from Best Day Airport Transfers). He told me to be at the lobby at 10:45 am and that he would arrange a transfer to the airport. We arrived at the lobby around 10:30 am. At about 10:55 am I called Max as our transfer had not arrived. Max assured me that the driver was on his way. At 11 am there was still no driver so I called Max again. He didn’t answer but sent me a text message stating “I’m working on it. Sorry”. Upon reading his text, I called Max back and he explained that the car that was picking us up got a flat tire so he was trying to get someone else to pick us up. At 11:20 am, there was still no driver so I called Max back. He answered my call and said that he couldn’t find another driver and that we should take a taxi. He said for us to ask for a receipt and submit a claim for a refund to WestJet. We ended sharing a mini van with two other people who were also on our flight. Thankfully we made it to the airport with enough time to check in and board our flight! Needless to say, none of us will be going back and staying at the Occidental PC!
