Cons- the hotel usually comes with access to the Palma Real property which is right on the beach and has access to the pool as well. We were surprised to learn upon our arrival that the Palma Real property was under a complete renovation which closed access to it. The beach access for the Reserve is right in front of the Palma Real property which means you listen to loud construction noise while you’re trying to relax on the beach. This was a huge disappointment. I was so excited to relax on this beautiful island, on the beach with a book, but the construction noise was so loud that I couldn’t even read my book. When I asked if there was anything they could do about it, they said nothing could be done. By the way, they don’t disclose this before you book. Also, once you arrive, they tell you that they’re going to give you a tour of their beautiful new property Grand Cana, but ultimately what it is, is a sales pitch for their hotel membership that lasts about 45 minutes to an hour. Think time share sales pitch. Not exactly the experience you want once you arrive to a beautiful island to relax. Much of the reserve property is also in much need of upkeep. Several of the tiles in the pool are missing, all the fountains are empty, and there is significant wear and tear throughout the property. Pretty disappointing to find when you’re staying at a five star resort. Pros- all the staff is extremely friendly and kind. This was the highlight of our stay at the reserve. Also, the food at the buffet at The Reserve is absolutely delicious. We were never disappointed with our meals there. There are hundreds of hotels in the general Punta Cana area that are not under construction and won’t ruin your beach/island experience. I highly recommend you book elsewhere.

First off the entire Punta Cana resorts area is under major renovations. Thats fine and probably good for the future. Melia needs to get better with customer service and proper notifications on WHAT YOU ACTUALLY BOOK. We seemed to be getting bounced around because the Paradisus Palma Real Golf resort was under renovations which NEVER was advertised when booked on the Melia website. We than got word from others who went there they were "upgraded" not really, to the Reserve. But not till they arrived. Thats unacceptable. After trying numerous times on line through Melia website with No answers, we finally received an Email stating we are "upgraded" to The Level. Again poor communication. Thankfully we reached out to people from previous trips and was convinced to go and it would work out. Once we arrived and they finally found our reservation, nail biting a few moments, we settled in. The Reserve was beautiful. Immaculately clean and staff all friendly willing to help you. Beautiul Lobby , Bar and pool. One big downfall not on the Beach but a short golf cart ride to the sand. Our Concierge Sandy Gil was fantastic. Professional, experienced and willing to help us with all needs. Reservations to restaurants and any special requests he took care of. He made sure we were comfortable and showed us around. He made sure we could contact him when needed. In a new place this was important having someone to answer any questions. The Resort smartly didnt over book and this made our trip so relaxing. No big crowds, plenty of shade with Chairs with umbrellas and cabanna's. Very important when you come right after winter! Entertainment at night was fun and the drinks were constantly flowing. The Reserve buffet was very good. Especially the breakfast. But overall a good variety of foods. Many restaurants to choose from. Staff at The Reserve was always pleasant, helpful and smiling. This is so important when you vacation and feel the people are there to help you relax and enjoy. The staff here did just that. The Reserve is NOT Adults only which we originally booked. But since it was not over booked it never became an issue. Overall a wonderful time but nervous about reservations in the future. Hopefully Melia gets there act together because we were one step from complete cancellation. Communicate, be Honest and give me what I paid for and dont surprise me when I arrive that I was "upgraded" and moved to another hotel. But yes I will return and hopefully see Sandy Gil again!

Dear Hatchethead44, Thank you very much for choosing us as your vacation destination for your trip to Punta Cana. Concerning your impressions, our Paradisus Palma Real is going through a renovation process where several areas will be transformed into a whole new elevated experience for our guests by improving the facilities, rooms, and gastronomic offers. An entire renovated Paradisus that will offer the best vacation experience is under construction. In this regard, we deeply regret that this has tarnished your pre-arrival experience. It is worth mentioning that all our guests received information before their stay indicating alternative accommodations from our reservations team or your travel agent. Rest assured, we will forward your opinion to the corresponding departments, with the purpose to improve the communication regarding the above-mentioned matter. Nonetheless, we are pleased to note that you had a pleasant stay with us and that Sandy's attentive service made up for the unfavorable impressions. We will be honored to pass on your words of appreciation to him. Lastly, it pleases us that you liked our grounds, the relaxing ambiance, and enjoyed your visit to The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real. We are looking forward to welcoming you back soon. The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real is the smaller of three physically separate complexes. It's smaller in terms of the number of rooms, however there is so much space that nowhere do you get the impression that they are at more than 30% occupancy (they were at 70% during our stay). The inner area has meandering swimming pools with lots of private corners, lots of different types of seating and lounging and apart from the main area near the bar/buffer restaurant, its VERY quiet. And the whole site is kept spotless and continuously "manicured". The Reserve is about 700 meters from the beach; that's a 15 min leisurely walk through luscious vegetation or a quick ride on the plentiful shuttle carts. The beach is also very clean with lots of palapas, beds and transats throughout. The drink and food service is excellent and there's a good variety of food. Speaking of food, other than the Miso Japanese restaurant, the food ranges from very good to excellent. We were originally dismayed that the Palma Real section of Paradisus is closed for renovations (more on this later) meaning several restaurants were not available to us. On the flip side, you can eat at the Grand Cana resort which has a few restaurants but our butler only managed to get us a reservation at their (also) Japanese restaurant which fared no better than the Reserve's. We don't recommend either of the Japanese restaurants (mediocre food and service). Which is weird because Reserve restaurants like Aqua and Hydro Grill have excellent food and service (our butler got us in multiple times). Service at both the Reserve and Grand Cana buffets is excellent and there's a good variety of food. We had a 2nd floor master suite facing the inner pool area and it was quiet. The 1st floor inner suites are "swim up" with their own private loungers and palapas (next time we'll get one of those). Yes, the rooms are slightly dated but ours was spotless, little visible wear and tear, and everything worked perfectly (great mattress and pillows). The 2nd jacuzzi on the large outside balcony was fun. As mentioned above, the service is excellent, everyone is friendly and greets you. If you need something just ask. After a few days they recognize you and you're treated like family. About Palma Real: If you're planning a December 2022 onwards vacation, it should be reopened by then. They are ripping EVERYTHING out (furniture, toilets, jacuzzis, windows)...and it promises to be a spectacular beach side resort. We understand they are redoing the restaurants, the pools...everything! Finally, a warm thanks to Harry Milor, our friendly butler, who always came around to see how we were doing and to make sure everything was perfect.

First of all, sorry for the long review, but if you are really interested in knowing about the experience of not one, but several guests, read on. If you don’t want to read all of it, this is what you should know: IN SUMMARY: - Really bad rooms, in need of an urgent update - Less than average housekeeping - Too far from the beach - Nonexistent entertainment services/activities - Great service from our Concierge Alvaro - Acceptable food, I would recommend the Aqua restaurant We switched to this hotel coming from another one, for which we’ll also leave a review, thinking that our experience here would be different, if not better… we couldn’t be more wrong! CHECK-IN: The first day our troubles begin… we arrived a group of 4. The room of the other two was ready first, so our bellboy brought our bags to the first room and left us there… we had to wait 1 more hour and call the reception two times to know if our room was ready… they tell us it’s ready, but didn’t bother to send the bellboys to take our bags, to the third floor, without elevator! We let that one go. ROOM: Our room’s AC NEVER worked! It was never lower than 76 degrees, even if we set it to 60. We called several times, the maintenance guy came in, worked for a few minutes on it and it never changed. We understand that 76 degrees is fine, but coming from Florida, we need the AC way lower, or at least the choice to make it colder at times. This was never an option, to the point that our room smelled due to the high humidity. The last day of our stay, our key stopped working, we had to wait for 45 minutes for the maintenance guy to show up and change the lock’s battery. This would have been ok, sh…t happens, but as we enter we notice that the housekeeping was never done in our room, so no cleaning service was done that day. Common sense would tell you that they would have reported the issue of their master key not working and having Maintenance go before we returned to our room, but common sense is something that doesn’t seem to exist here. To “clean the mess up” the housekeeper brought us the largest pile of towels a human could carry, as if we could cover the mess in our room with towels and nothing else… LOCATION: This hotel is not located right at the beach, you’ll need to take a golf cart from the lobby to move to the beach, then another one to come back. One of the downsides is the waiting times, they are supposed to come by every five minutes, but they can take up to 20 minutes and the lines get really long, specially at the beach. The other negative thing of being so far away from the beach is that you’ll need to plan your day and spend lots of time at the beach or by the pool. The difference with a hotel right at the beach is that there is always the option to spend a while at the beach, another while by the pool. You won’t find that option here. ENTERTAINMENT: Zero, Null, Nothing, Void. We didn’t meet a single person from the entertainment team, so we assumed that there was not one. There are no shows in this hotel, and the activities are so scattered that you would need to spend the whole day chasing around what to do and even so, there’s a chance they would not do it. So we spent most of our days at the pool, chasing waiters to get us drinks ;-). POSITIVE: We MUST point out that our concierge, Alvaro, was the only reason we didn’t change hotels again. He was always attentive and helpful, he was able to solve most of the issues we had, at least the ones he could solve, and was friendly and always worried of our wellbeing. I would recommend him to spend his talents in a different place, far from this one. We should also mention that the food was acceptable, and that the restaurant service was very good, as long as you leave a great tip, they’ll move heaven and earth to please us. Which we didn’t mind because we understand how all-inclusive service works. THE CIRCLE: We were asked to participate in a talk about Melia’s exclusive club… we had our breakfast with the representative, a very friendly and happy Rafael, who was at least willing to make us feel welcomed. All the while we kept wondering, how can I spend thousands of dollars in a club that will offer me “high-end” hotels like this one? I’d rather pay more for a different hotel chain, but this will definitely be the last time we stay at ANY Melia hotel.

Dear YoaRobe, First and foremost, we would like to thank you for choosing our hotel as a vacation destination, and for taking the time to share your comments regarding your visit to our hotel. It is only through our guest's valued comments and feedback that we can identify our shortcomings, make amends, and prevent the occurrence of similar situations. Since our goal is to always strive for service excellence, we trust this relationship with our guests, and their comments will help us achieve it in no time. Permit us to express our most sincere apologies for the situations encountered during your stay. We are very concerned to hear about your disappointment and the disconcerting experience that you faced despite our efforts to make your stay a positive experience. Concerning the check-in experience, we regret you spent more time than expected. We assure you that we will work to improve agility in the process. Nevertheless, we cannot fail to emphasize that check-in time is from 3:00 pm if availability allows us to deliver the rooms according to the guest's arrival. Our company considers that every aspect that is part of the service offered by a hotel adds value to the overall experience. In this sense, our rooms are subject to a cleaning and supervision process that, on some occasions, may take a bit longer than the estimated time. This is to ensure that, in every effort, we provide a high-quality service. As a result of your feedback, we are providing additional efforts to prevent similar situations from happening in the future. As previously mentioned, our rooms are subject to revisions from our maintenance and housekeeping departments; however, there might be situations that can arise during our guest's stay.  We deeply lament that your room was affected by air conditioning issues, and as a result, they have obtained a negative impression of our services. Rest assured that all their valued observations have been shared with our management and will be taken as an area of opportunity that we must verify and make amends to ensure that no future guest experiences it. We offer a wide variety of activities to ensure our guests have an unforgettable vacation. Therefore, to notice that you were not able to perceive the different activities we offer at the pool and beach during the day like, dance and yoga classes, painting and cigar workshop, beach volleyball, silent disco, live music, and much more, saddened us. Remain confident that we will forward your observation to the corresponding department, with the purpose to keep improving the offered experience. Lastly, we would like to thank you for highlighting the excellent service received from Alvaro, who worked hard to cater to your needs and improve your overall experience. We are sure he will be happy to know about your impression regarding his service. It would be a pleasure for us to have a chance for a new opportunity to redeem ourselves, aiming to ameliorate your prior experience, which would be highly appreciated. Our only desire is to create the best memories for you and your family and to become your preferred place away from home. Kind regards, Guest Service Center Management

This was my first Punta Cana experience . we are a group of 8 ( 4 couples ) it is beyond my expectation. the beach is beautiful. one thing is that they close the palma real on our 3rd day so we have to access the beach from a different location . they have food trucks and drinks on the beach .Our concierge Pedro Perez made sure we got our dinner reservation and he didnt fail us. he also made sure we tried a local Dominican food that was made just for us serve in one of the outdoor restaurant by the pool. The staff was nice especially the one working on the ground which gave us coconut drink fresh from the coconut tree. Gabriele who check us in is also excellent and saw him as we were checking out giving us advise when is the best time to visit DR, I would definitely come back

Overall this was a great experience. We liked that the resort where we stayed was not too busy and we always found beds at the pool and at the beach. The constant interruption at the beach from people who were trying to sell us products that we didn't need was a bit annoying, but it didn't happen every day. The food was nice at the Grand Cana hotel, where they have more options than at the Reserve. On the other hand we're glad that we chose the Reserve, not Grand Cana, because the poolside has way more vegetation and feels more quiet and private. We also appreciated the live music at the Gabi club, which by the way has excellent cocktails. The cleaning service of the room could be improved - there were two consecutive days when the room was not serviced. Also the mini bar was not refilled with water a couple of time, but we called room service and they handled it quickly. We didn't really like that we wasted about two hours of our vacation on a misleading sales pitch about a vacation club - Melia vacation club. Both us and the salesmen could have avoided wasting our time if we knew upfront what it was about. We had a hard time breaking large bills, as USD is not our currency. Other than that we really enjoyed everything. Our concierge, Harry Milor, did an excellent job with making the dinner restaurant reservations for each night and guiding us throughout our stay. We would definitely come again.
