We just returned from another weeklong stay at the Iberostar Bavaro Selection. COVID WARNING: COVID had a vote in our vacation, and things are not normal due to COVID. The hotel is VERY safe and I felt safer there then here in the states as far as COVID worries. Our last trip there was in 2010 when I proposed to my now wife. This hotel, as always is very nice. There are some things that need to be addressed. I traveled with my wife and two children, 11 and 16. We had an enjoyable time and so allow me to explain: Flight and Landing at Airport (4 of 5 Stars): We landed from a Frontier flight direct from Chicago O’Hare to Punta Cana. This was the only choice given to us for the time of our departure as this was an Apple Vacation. I wish we would have a better airline. We did splurge for the more legroom seats, but of course due to COVID, no drinks or snacks of any kind offered for this 4.5-hour flight. Frontier does not offer any WIFI or in air entertainment either, so digital download to your device prior or bring an old-fashioned book. The P.C. airport has upgraded a lot since my last visit in 2010. We were off the plane and though immigration amazingly fast. You do need to have the new electronic health and immigration form complete PRIOR to landing. This sped my family and I along greatly. Those without it were held up for over an hour. We hired a porter at the baggage claim and im glad I did! I usually don’t, but I had a funny feeling he would help us, and boy did he! For the 10 bucks I gave him, we basically bypassed the customs and out process police from the airport. Just waived right on though as we were with him! Nice. I had paid for private transportation to the resort via Apple/Amstar and the shuttle was ready when we exited the terminal. Also bought two beers off a local peddler for the ride! 😊 -Arrival (5 of 5 Stars): Shuttle took us to the main lobby at the Bavaro Selection. It brought back such good memories! Upon arrival I went to check in and was surprised to know that since I was a repeat customer, in was comped an upgrade to the Coral Level of this resort. We were then at once without wait loaded on a golf cart and driven to a new part of the resort called the Coral Level. This is basically the same as the rest of the resort villas but with more perks but I have heard the Coral Level costs extra (a price I did NOT pay). Ill explain later. Check-in at the Coral Level lobby was great and fast (we were given a beverage, so we had Cuba Libre’s of course!) and we were quickly escorted with help to our second-floor family suite room(s). Room(s)[5 of 5 stars]: Room Number was #3864, by the lobby and near the back with a small Coral Level pool only right up against it. The room was clean, clean, CLEAN! Did I mention it was clean? Smell was fresh and sanitized! We basically had two rooms with an adjoining (albeit skinny) door between for our two rooms for a family of 4. The room was spacious, and the sunken seating area was a nice touch. In the adult room we had a king size bed and was very comfy. The beds in the “Kids room” were two twins and the couch pulled out into a queen sleeper. The bathroom(s) was awesome. The shower was roomy, even for two people at once. The bathrooms had been upgraded since our last visit, and this is a good thing. Water was always hot, and the bathroom was decorated in stone. The toilet area adjoins the sink area and overall, I was very pleased with the quality of the bathroom facilities. Also, in the room is a TV with many channels with most languages. There is free WIFI throughout the property and coverage is good. Your room will go out to a patio with sliding glass doors, which are incredibly heavy, but that must be for the weather. On the patio there is a table and 2 chairs. The air conditioning worked very well. I think it may be regulated to not get super cold to save energy and it also shuts off when you leave the door or the sliding patio door open for more than 15 seconds. - Good to know: There are two buttons by the door. One turns on green and the other turns on red. The green light means come clean my room, the red is the do not disturb light. Facilities (5/5)/Food(2/5): The Coral Level facilities of the resort are second to none. All are clean and the landscaping is simply beautiful. The walkways can get a bit slippery so care is needed if you walk when it is damp or wet. Everything was simply grand in its viewing. From the animals, to the decorative pools, simply great. The food was fair. The quality was much less than our 2010 earlier visit. I will blame COVID for this. Further, only two buffets are open (Main lobby for breakfast and dinner and beach area for lunch) and one sitting restaurant, and you need to make reservations on your first full day of the vacation to ensure you get a good time to eat. The restaurant is called El Faro. Sometimes it was a challenge to find food that was somewhat not exotic. In all, the buffet meals were not so good. Breakfast buffet was the worst with undercooked eggs and undercooked sausage and a lot of ethnic type foods that did not look appealing. You could wait for eggs to order but even with the resort being at 20% capacity due to COVID, there was a long wait and a language barrier for over hard eggs. We found out on day 2 that since we were in the Coral Level we could eat breakfast at El Faro, and we did the rest of the time and it was very good. Lunch buffet was good, and dinner at El Faro was just ok as well, and the language barrier had the server continuously bringing out each of us multiple entrees even though we did not order them. This was corrected by day 5. All in all, I was stomach sick on day 3, 5, and 7 but I am NOT blaming the food nor the booze. No one else in my family was ill and we all ate the same thing most every day, with the kids being a bit more adventurous. I will chalk it up to the sun (which is beautiful!) and my digestive system. When I travel that is normal for me when I try new and different food. I took some Imodium with anti-gas pills with me and ended up taking one daily. I was vomiting sick on one evening and otherwise just diarrheal sick and upset stomach on the other two days. Again, I'm not saying it was the food, LET ME BE CLEAR HERE, but I will just say that the food was less quality than when we visited in 2010. BEACH/POOL(4/5): The beach was awesome. The water was nice and clear! Remember, if you stay on the north side of the island, you are facing the Atlantic Ocean, so the water will be a touch cooler and a wee bit choppier. We swam in the ocean every day except one. Finding a spot on the beach was not as hard as the occupancy was 20%. As we were in the Coral Level, we had our own semi-private beach with drink service. We stayed there every day except one. Service was awesome and Rainer, the server, was the best at getting us what we wanted! Our schedule usually got us to the beach about 930-11 am and by then, the front row of chairs that face the ocean were taken. We always found a great alternate spot to sit though so we were not upset, and we were right by the beach bar and infinity pool which was just fine with me! Some guests preferred the large pool and stayed there, I never used the pool, and the in-pool bar was closed due to COVID so no swim-up drinks. I figure I can swim in a pool any time, but the ocean is a different story. The surf on the beach was fine, a couple of days it was up a bit and pulling you, but still, no real big waves and they always keep the surf flags up to date. Most days were yellow, a few were red. BAR/NIGHTLIFE: There are bars in only 3 locations due to COVID so if you like to drink your share of your all-inclusive vacation, this place is not up to the challenge, but again DR governmental rules are sticky due to COVID. Have the national drink: Cuba Libre (Liberate Cuba) as it is a Rum and Coke. Ask for the coke to come out of a bottle though, as my previous mention of sickness may be contributed to the funny tasting Coke coming out of the “bar gun”. Other drinks are good and the level of alcohol you get did vary from bar to bar, with the El Faro bar being the best and pool bar and lobby bar is less than tasty. But if you tip the help, they will make it how you want and take good care of you. I did tip a lot. A lesson I learned from previous excursions. It gets you far! Not much, like maybe 5 to 10 US Dollars a day, but that got me served faster than most. The nightly entertainment at the Bavaro was not great, but again this is due to COVID regulations in the DR. The entertainment was not the best but they tried. All the nights were the same Latin female singer who could sing for sure, but compared to the full-on productions we have seen in the past…now barred due to COVID, it just was not all that entertaining. Also, unless you like Latin ballads and songs of sadness or love, it may not be your thing. We skipped it 3 out of the 7 nights we were there. One night they had an English singing duo who did a 70’s disco revue, and it was great! One because it was not the same Latin ballads as every other night, and two because it was entertaining, and they got the crowd involved. A couple of nights they did trivia for about 30 minutes between the singer, and one night we won! We got a free t-shirt. The night that the 70’s show was on, as soon as they started singing, 60% of the guests left. This is due to most of the guests were from Central/South America, or from Eastern Europe, I would guess. LAST ITEMS: A couple of things. 1. The APP they direct you to all the time to find out what is going on at the resort is not good at all. I have a brand new Android Samsung 5G phone. The App will constantly hang for about 3-8 minutes after you open it. ONLY then will it work. If you click on something before it fully loads, and you never know when this is, it will lock up the app. BUT here is the thing, they give you ZERO info on the activities or the kids club or really anything, they always push you to the APP! You will not get a map of the resort unless you plead with them, and there is not a map on the App. Navigate though ground recognition and asking questions. 2. The kids club is open, but no one told us it had moved from the kid’s area to the main pool until day 6 of our stay, and we did look! Our 11-year-old wanted to go to the club every day, but we couldn’t find it! Most things are maybe open, or maybe closed. It simply depends and you have to check every day…but going back to the APP! It was frustrating. 3. The SPA is very nice. Again, sadly, VERY limited due to COVID. I would recommend a massage. 4. The Golf course, which was under construction when we went in 2010, looked beautiful, and I'm an avid golfer, but I didn’t play. I would play though if I went again. 5. Tip the mini-bar man and ask him for the type of beer you want, otherwise, it will be Budweiser. RECOMMENDATION(3.5 out of 5 stars): I would recommend this place. It is clean, open, friendly, and they treat you well there, BUT the food is less quality than I expected. No real complaints from me or my family besides anything before mentioned. Yera and Maria (Iberostar and Amstar reps) are GREAT. Engage them and they will help you out. Be careful of the timeshare pitch. We did it because we were curious, and its billed for 90 minutes, but Luis, after a fine breakfast and his beginning pitch, realized I was not interested and politely took us back to our room when we said no after about 50 minutes. Iberostar is trying to up their resort game with “Memberships” and “Owners” at a steep cost. We had fun and are sorry we had to leave. We did one excursion. It was coral snorkel swimming through Amstar as my son wanted to see “real” coral. I don’t recommend this excursion. You snorkel for about 20 minutes in this extremely crowded area of other snorkeler’s and boats. Then you get on the boat for a nice ride where they feed you (insert maybe where my stomach issue came from). They also give you booze. You then get dropped off on a private beach for about 30 minutes, then driven again to a swimming area where you are again dropped off to stand in shoulder-deep water and drink. I didn’t have too much fun. END: This resort itself is top-notch. We did this vacation through our local travel agent, Bon Voyage Travel and our rep was Megan. She was great! Most of the people we talked to who came down there every year/every other year had tried other hotels, and all of them say that the Iberostar chain is hands down the best place to go…BUT this year due to COVID the food was way off. All of the employees are kind. Our Apple/Amstar rep was awesome, named Maria, from Santa Domingo. Great lady and always helpful. I recommend this resort, we may even retire there on the golf property as the villas in the timeshare are BEAUTIFUL! After this COVID crud goes away, maybe next year, we will go to another location, but the Iberostar Bavaro Selection will always be a favorite. Please feel free to ask me any questions.

It's nice to be a way during pandemic. Way less people at resort that's why a lot of things are impacted because of that. Food is ok but not a large selection, cleaning room services are semi- ok. For the money that you pay, you should get more. Alcohol is fake unless you tip bartenders they will use original brands. Entertainment is bad, just karaoke that last up to 4am with drunks(lol). And you should already that stuff is slow moving.

Interesting hotel (meal, rooms, location, pools) but the service of concierge and entertainment/activities need to be improved. You have to look by yourself how to practice sports (water activities, volleyball, etc...). The water activities are often closed for any reason and it is impossible to talk with someone responsible.

I am currently staying with my husband, we came here for our honeymoon and we chose this resort based on favorable reviews, however we were very disappointed from the very beginning. I contacted the resort a month prior to our arrival and asked for special honeymoon arrangements as all the resorts do that: a banner on the door, flower arrangement on the bed, bottle of champagne and fruits in the room, free or discounted couples massage... when we arrived we found nothing of the above and got a room on the first floor which is not very intimate. When my husband went to the front desk to complain it took him a while to get them to send some champagne as staff was asking him to pay extra. We got a room on the second floor next day but once again without any special honeymoon stuff. Most of the waiters don't speak simple English, food at the buffet is very mediocre, most of a-la carte restaurants are closed and the those available are hard to book. Been to Punta Cana before, paid less but the service and food was way better. Iberostar is a huge chain and I guess they were hit hard with pandemic but I know for sure that we are not coming back to this resort.

We strive to provide a second to none service and facility to all our guests and do the utmost for everyone to leave with beautiful memories, however, we are more than sorry that this was not achieved with you.
