Ok so a very mixed feeling about this holiday. We were not level guests and stayed in block 15 room 05, which is a ground floor room. The minute we arrived we were trying to be upgrade $800 reduced to $400 for a room near the beach. We refused this then after a 20 minute standing at check in I was given this room anyway due to a double booking! However we met some friends who were in the room we should have been in and it's exactly the same (slightly smaller bedroom), save your $400 and walk to the beach. There are golf carts that run, could be more often but a wait isn't an issue throughout the day just when you have an excursion or dinner reservations it becomes an issue. Tea and coffee facilities were there but not used, so I can't comment on this. Booking dinner reservations is painful. The staff on here don't speak great English and you can only book 2 days in advance. Every time they start with 9.30pm? No no no, are you keeping earlier spots for the level guests? It rains heavily every so often which is known, however the hotel doesn't accommodate for this. From our room 1505 we had a 10 min walk to reception, the road is flooded in a number of places so you are forced onto the grass which is just mud and covers your shoes. Noone wants to dress for dinner and walk through that! Extra shuttle busses should have been provided - for everyone not just them paying for levels either!!!! I'll do good, average and poor of the room, pool and food which are the most important points for us when we travel. Good - Room is very spacious with plenty of storage, lovely huge comfortable bed, television had LOADS of channels and could be changed from Spanish to English, mini bar temperature was good, decent content and filled daily (although hit and miss what you got) and a few mirrors around for getting dressed 😉. Air con lush and cool. Loved the rocking chairs on the terrace. Shower was spacious. Always plenty of clean towels and products every day. WiFi in the room was good, only on our last day did it lose connection. Main pool was very large and deep, so good for those who like a swim get a good few laps. Water activities were very consistent, 12 & 4pm. Staff at the pool bar were great, really friendly and attentive. We attempted Spanish and they humoured us 😂 They remembered your drinks as the stay went on and really are an asset to the hotel. We never went hungry throughout our 2 weeks however the buffet for breakfast and lunch then dinner does become repetative. The fresh pasta and omelette stations are the best - I had one of these each pretty much daily. The Vietnamese and Mediterranean restaurants are beautiful, I would get these in as early as you can. Absolutely visit the jiggar bar before your food (situated between the 2 restaurants) - best cocktails in the resort. Average - Cleaning was consistent however not always the cleanest once done. The safe didn't work (however I didn't bother going to reception to resolve this). Some of the draws stunk of damp, which then made our clothes smell (I just moved the things and didn't use that draw again). Blackout curtains were ok, but short to be completely dark. Some cockroaches on the terrace (looked dead as they were on the track of the sliding door, on the outside) were there all week. The fire alarm right above the bed flashes so much and is so bright. Our first 2 days we had no hot water and were told it was being looked at, and received no update. If you want a bed round the pool (in the shade or sun) you need to be there before 10am or you need to get to the beach. There are also so many palm trees that there isn't that much sunny areas without blocking the walkways. You are provided with towel cards for a towel each, the fresh ones come really early every day, however end really early too. So if you've been in the pool after 3, have a wet towel and want to change fresh for the next day - tough non left. You then have to take wet towels back to your room (as mentioned below there is nowhere to dry this). Not much hassle around the pool, you are asked if you want a coconut, trips etc but once you say no then they move on. There is no cleaning around the seating area throughout the day, guests leave food and drink packaging which attracts bugs! There are bins but people don't appear to use them! The specialist restaurant menus are small, so if you are lucky enough to go more than twice you end up eating the same food. Waiting staff are hit and miss, some are clearly working for a tip and deserve it, others couldn't care and hardly even speak. Poor - Bugs Bugs Bugs, we appeared to have mosquitos in our room daily, even though we never kept our terrace doors open. We resorted to putting a towel at the back of the door to try and block any gaps. Massive gaps all around the door, it didn't appear to fit the frame at all, you hear everything from upstairs and next door (see photos). No clothes rail on the terrace so you can only hang wet items on the backs of the chair, not ideal in a breezy coastal place. The bathroom needs an upgrade - very old and tired looking, the glass door between the bedroom and bathroom isn't great - who wants to see your partner in the loo??? The pool is dirty, it's not surprising to see foliage due to the amount round the pool, however there were caterpillars, bird poo, and human rubbish in there throughout the day. There's also what looks like a black scum round the sides, but I think this is this paint coming off from the AM scrub from the cleaners. You can feel and see the paint coming off on the floor. It appears there was only one rest room next to the pool bar (other than the ones next to the restaurant) so I can only assume alot of people did their pee in the pool as it's a large area to walk around. The shower areas around the pool were often blocked for days (see photos). Due to this people were coming off the beach and washing their feet in the pool. The staff round the pool and the towel desk will try and sell you trips, they are quite pushy and appear to add 'taxes of $10pp' to the booking, however if you go to the guy sitting in the buffet restaurant (he isn't pushy and very informative) the taxes are included in the price! Is this staff member trying to make $20+ per booking??? Also spa guys trying to get you in all the time when you enter the restaurant. The food area has alot of uncovered food so fly's are all over, this is very off putting. The staff are so hard working, however there is no structure of who is dealing with what. For example, you are sat at a table, no drinks, then getting water 25 mins later and then asked if you want anything else just before you leave. I know this is a spanish speaking country, however there are a lot of staff put in a position where they don't understand English. I waited 45 mins for a drink to find out the girl didn't understand me and only when I questioned this were we told she didn't understand. In short if you are not a level guest they don't care! We paid £4,000 for this holiday and it has been the most expensive Carribbean holiday yet, but we've been treated like lower guests. The hotel doesn't appear to recycle, if they do there are no separated bins which means the staff need to pick their way through the bags - so I'm assuming they don't recycle. Finally we were all inclusive, but only the standard was all inclusive, everything else attracted a charge. For example, cabana beds round the pool and beach area, roof top bar, pool waiters, anything other than cheap watered down drinks. Even to tables between sunbeds - these are kept for the 'special guests', you will see a few around our standard pool area however these levels guests come and take them for their beach. I've been to a number of large hotel chains in the Carribbean and this has been the worst - awful 1st (and so far last) experience of Melia. Disappointed couple ☹️ …
