We stayed for a night at the Shanxi Grand and were just looking for a place to lay our heads. The hotel exceeded our expectations, which were quite low, based on reviews and pictures. What was good: very friendly staff, flexibility with check-out time, good breakfast, large room, good location, decent view from the room, adequate wifi. What wasn't: dated... More

Although the hotel is old and the lobby could use a remodeling, our room was spacious, very clean, the windows were facing the street and offered a very nice view of the sunrise. The towels, the bed sheets and the bath gowns were immaculate, good soap and shampoo, hair drier, etc. The breakfast was very good and, altogether, we had... More

Good and friendly staff. Clean. Good food. Location very good, bang downtown. Spacious rooms, automatic electrically motor driven curtain. Overall a good experience and recommended at this price. Very close to shopping, food etc.

The Good: good location; clean rooms; efficient service; The bad: ugly building; old lobby; dull lobby bar; duller shops; people smoke everywhere despite signs prohibiting it. Seen there is not much choice in Taiyuan, this is probably the best value for money out there.

We were in Taiyuan to adopt our sons. The Shanxi Grand Hotel was convenient to the park, a bank and some shopping. We found the staff very friendly and accommodating. Although the language barrier was present sometimes, we were surprised to meet a waiter, at breakfast, who was studying English. His language skills were quite good. I was amazed at... More

Sadly, we only had one night here whilst travelling in the Shanxi Province. Upon arrival we were greeted in the friendliest and warmest manner. Reception staff were brilliant. Our room , although not spacious was certainly well designed, spotlessly clean and had the most comfortable bed we have slept on in China. The Chinese restaurant meal was really good and breakfast... It all starts well as you enter a huge and grand lobby, pianist tinkling the ivories and friendly staff. But then you look for your luggage only to find a helpful bell hop has moved it to some remote storeroom because it was cluttering up the entrance. So to the room. It all looks nice but then shortly after midnight... More

Spent 5 nights in Taiyuan. Unfortunately, I don't think there are many quality hotel options, even though Taiyuan has 4 million people in it. Service was good, even though we had a moment or two of cultural language difficulty. The lobby is pretty nice, but often smelled of smoke, since a large percentage of Chinese smoke. Was tough on our... More

This hotel fails to live up to the promise of its name. It might have been grand when was built – perhaps thirty or forty years ago – but it appears rather dated now. My room was small and it seemed cosy after the sub-zero temperatures outside. I had two large suitcases and had to open them one by one... More
