Perched on the jagged rim of the crater, wreathed in morning mist, camouflaged in river-stone and cloaked in indigenous creepers, the Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is a triumph of ecological and architectural fusion. Sensitively constructed so as to take nothing from its environment whilst affording endless vistas over the heat-shimmering reaches of the crater below, the clustered boulder-built buildings of the Lodge hug the crater rim, linked by rope-lashed timber walkways that skirt the buttressed roots of ancient, liana-hung trees.

Good lodge! Room view is on crater - you may see animals from your balcony. Some of them (we saw elephants) may walk in front of the bar :) it is so amazing! Food in restaurant is very tasty (tastier vs Serena Manyara and Serena Serengeti!). Very nice staff - it was so comfortable to stay there. You should be careful: there is a bit cold at evenings and nights in this area (2,3km above sea level). The holes turns on heating and gives heating pads for you. But take longsleeves to walk around :)

The location at the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater is great. Quick comments: Reception is very small. Wonder how they would receive over 20 guests at one time. Some rooms need to be upgraded; Breakfast, lunch and dinner were good but the choice was limited (probably because they were fewer guests due to COVID); Nice view from the restaurant of the Crater; We had a fine room on the fourth floor. Nice view of the Crater before dark but nothing could be seen after dark. The inside lay-out of the hotel room was more like a four star hotel room. Staff were friendly; We enjoyed our stay and it was nice to meet the modest General Manager who would come to ask us about our meals. Generally a good stay. Tip: some rooms are very far from the re epitome. If you have a handicap or are over 70 years old, you may wish to ask for a decent room near the reception. Munir D.

Ngorongoro Serena Safari Lodge is an oasis of calm, from the first moment you arrive it feels relaxing and welcoming. After several days safari in Bush camps arriving to chilled juice on the patio overlooking stunning grounds was amazing. We jumped in the pool straight away to cool off. Accommodated is set in their amazing grounds you are surrounded by animals and wild flowers. Theirs a jogging route and several walks you can do to soak it all up. Determined to support the local community the hotel provides many jobs for locals, has planted literally thousands of trees to help regenerate the area. Our guide who had been doing safaris for 10 years described what transformation the hotel had provided to the community since it had been built. At the hotel the staff were super friendly and accommodating, whether when we wanted to hand out in the bar and play pool or if we fancied a quiet night in with an open fire in our room. We arrived as coronavirus restrictions first began to lift and were very impressed with the attention to safety that the staff had. We had temperatures checked on arrival, frequent hand sanitisation and staff work masks and gloves throughout. Despite the strange situation their friendliness was abundant. Ngorongoro Crater is a must stop on your Tanzania itinerary and we cant recommend The Retreat highly enough for your stay.

We have been to quite a few lodges in the Ngorongoro area but none come close to the view offered by Serena! The rooms are very comfortable but a little bit dated although very clean and well maintained. We didn't realize the heating and hot water is not 24 hours so having a cold shower was somewhat, an unpleasant experience. They catered to our dietary needs with excellent food and the service was impeccable. Again, the view of the crater from the rooms and bar is heavenly!

The hotel is set on the rim of the crater and overlooks right into it. We were in room 45 and 46 where the views are exceptional of the ngorongoro crater. There is no swimming pool which is very smart as it get extremely cold due to the high altitude. The chef and the restaurant staff are brilliant and super friendly and the service is outstanding and maintains a very high standard throughout. The only issue we had was that the water in the shower was cold on two occassions. Once we reported the issue got fixed within 20 minutes. A great hotel and the views are brilliant. We also got packed breakfast on our day into the crater and there was a lot of food packed and all cutlery and plates was provided. First time i have seen such quality packed breakfast.
