My friend and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Backyard Hostel. The staff are super friendly, and the hostel itself has a really great vibe and homely feeling. We really loved spending time just hanging out there, and we liked how accessible the motorbike taxis were from the hostel.

I stayed in a tent and in beds here for few days. It is a nice place to chill... High value for money... the administrator help me to find a laundry place in the center, which was super nice! The place is close to a cool bar/restaurant....

The atmosphere is great because of the nice green garden and the open, young trustworthy people around. There's a water cooker, hot shower and drinkable tap water. Only minuses are the nearby street, which can be loud and the distance to the city centre. It's possible to buy local handicrafts.

The hostel has a real nice property. There is a big garden with a nice bar and also an extra outside kitchen and BBQ. You can also sit outside on the porch and enjoy the view of Kili. There is reliable Wifi (what is difficult to find in Tanzania as I noticed :) ) The hostel works with a partner organization Trueviews who offers great safaris or a trip to Kilimanjaro. I met a lot of people who got scammed so this is a nice option:) There was currently no breakfast option, but this will be back the end of February

The hostel is a bit outside of Moshi but is just 15 min away from the center (on foot). I slept in a tent, under a tree and with a perfect view of Kilimanjaro. Very friendly host and staff members. Spent just two nights there but had a great laugh with the guests and the host. hot shower and transfer when asked for it. absolutely recommended!!!!

Hi Maurus! Thank you so much for your kind review. We did have a great laugh as well as a fun night at the hostel. It was a pleasure having you around even for just a couple of days. You were a very friendly guest ;) Now let's see if we manage to meet up somewhere in Europe! Good luck with your research in Dar and see you again soon.

I stayed here with my +1 as we were planning a Safari nearby in Serengeti and "N.g.o.r.o.n.g.o.r.o. National Park". It is a youth hostel, and it's name is not metaphorical, it is literally a backyard. Ups: - close to M.o.s.h.i "center". - welcoming staff (they even have their very own Masai guarding the place, how cool is that) - the hostel finances a local N.G.O., so you're doing good by staying here too. - well connected with local tour operators which we used during our stay - good on a budget - they have beer which is fresh most of the time. - you can also just pitch your tent here for a minimal fee per night. Downs: - some intermittent power outages (this is the case for most establishments in town I have heard, due to limited electricity supply for the town) - no air con (so comfort-seekers walk on) - Probably difficult for families or special-needs in terms of wheel chair access, but fine for anyone else. - no internet but the manager can share their internet connection.

Well Steve, thanks a lot for your very detailed review. I'm sure you will receive lots of thankful votes for that. Because nobody has ever been so specific. Everything you said is true. Not much we can do about the power outages unfortunately. But yes, maybe one day, if we have enough money, we could install air con, at least in one of the rooms. But you know how much energy these machines use. Anyway, we are glad you enjoyed your time here. It was a pleasure having you around and we hope to see you again soon!

Chris, the hostel manager, was nothing but accommodating from the first email we sent. He responded very promptly and made us feel at home right on arrival. He gave us ideas of where to eat, made great breakfasts, helped us with transportation, and was always around to answer our questions. We couldn't have been more thankful for such a relaxing stay! We would definitely stay here again.

Wow Erin! That was the nicest review ever. I am more than thankful for your kind words and of course for having had the opportunity to meet you. It never really feel like work when guests are as nice as you. So if ever you find the time to travel again this far between two surgeries (I'm not sure you'll become a surgeon but oh well), please pay us another visit! Good luck with this new adventure of yours.

I stayed for 1 night during Kili Marathon Chris, the Hostel manager responded very promptly to all my questions prior to arrival. I had brought my own tent and used the camping area near the garden. I had some company with a tortoise!  Garden is clean and well maintained. Overall, the hostel lives up to its reputation – not classy but not basic either and price that is favoring on your wallet. The main bus stand is about a 30 minute walk while a local “daladala” will cost you Tsh 300 ($0.14) The small garden outside the hostel with two hammocks (one is under the big giraffe) really gives you an excuse not to step-out from the facility. Read a book, or just take a nap under the shade and enjoy the breeze!! They even considered my meal preference and changed the bbq menu that night. I couldn’t have been more thankful. Both dinner and breakfast menus were awesome. I had forgotten my necklace and Chris kindly wrote to me. This just gives me another reason to go back. Amazing and very friendly people

Wow, thank you so much for your kind words Moiz! With such a comment, it's hard to find the right words to show how grateful we are. You've been an outstanding guest! You have to know it. Rarely is someone so kind. So thank you so much for choosing to spend some time here.. and take a nap in our hammock. Even though we do not have menus as such, we do try to make our guests' hungry mouths satisfied when there is a BBQ or when they order breakfast. I am glad that you enjoyed it! I will keep your necklace until you visit us again. So see you around soon!
