Warm and welcoming staff, amazing food, clean rooms and excellent amenities. We stayed here before and after our hike up to Kilimanjaro and this hotel was everything we need. The little details is what hit home for me , they kept the hot water heater on , kept the charging converter in our room, learned our fav food orders. Always smiling and tending to our needs. Thank you TEDDY, SIMBA, INNOCENT, OLIVIER , RICHARD AND ESTER. We are definitely staying at your lodge the next time we visit!!
This hotel has the friendliest staff I have ever met at any place I have stayed at around the world. As soon as you arrive they make you feel like family and are so, so welcoming. Every staff member is so warm, helpful and friendly. The staff here made me feel at home right away and I'm so thankful to all of them. The rooms are a good size, have good air con and wifi. The bathroom is also really nice! Rooms also have a balcony, which is a great place to sit. The restaurant downstairs is also great! There is also a bar at the hotel. You can get great views of Kilimanjaro from this hotel. I highly recommend staying here if you're going to Kilimanjaro!
I stayed in Stella Maris as part of my trip to summit Kilimanjaro. This is one of the main activities, and people circulate through the hotel (before and after their trip to Kili) which is fun as it easy to get some last hand experiences of people who just came down from the mountain. So most of the guests have common interests, which makes socializing easy (nice if you are a solo traveler). The hotel is clean, bed was good with big mosquito nets, the food was good and probably more important safe to our western stomachs. The staff is super friendly and will receive you with open arms. They do their utmost to make your stay pleasant. It is also really easy to organize something extra, so for example they took met to a Maasai Cultural Village and Chemka Hot Springs. I did not book this upfront, just organized on the spot. But the real reason to stay there is the good feeling you will have after seeing the children. The hotel (and thus your stay) supports the school for orphanage kids (locate in front of the hotel). That beats any five star luxury resort…. …
I would recommend Stella Maris Lodge to anyone who is traveling to Tanzania! The hotel is amazing! From the delicious food, to the friendliest staff around, to the air conditioned rooms, I will definitely be going back! Teddy Chuwa, the manager of the hotel, made our stay perfect.
I stayed here for 12 nights with a group on a medical service trip. The accommodations were great. We were in a 4 person room which was lovely. The AC provided cool sleeping conditions and a fan was sufficient for the two beds in the non AC room. The staff at the lodge was friendly and welcoming. We arrived with a getting of "Welcome Home!" along with hugs from Teddy, Innocent, and Oliva. Revo was always attentive in the dining room and on top of our needs. The food provided to our group was always delicious. I loved the many curries served. Breakfast was plentiful and the fresh fruit was amazing. The view from the bar of the lodge is stellar. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and can't wait to make it back here.
What a beautiful lodge in Moshi,Tanzania. Waking up to a beautiful view of Mount Kilimanjaro was breathtaking! Rooms were very clean, The food was delicious. I just can’t say enough good things about the entire staff at the Stella Maris Lodge from the 1st day we arrived to the last day there we were treated like family! They made everything we did special. The love that was shown to us will forever stay in my heart. I highly recommend staying at the Stella Maris lodge when visiting Tanzania. Whether you are visiting for a medical mission, climbing Mount Kilimanjaro, going on a safari or just there to embrace their culture they will make you feel like you are home!
Teddy I want to thank you so much for making my stay at your hotel memorable. You and your staff went above and beyond to mske me feel at home. The food is amazing and the staff always greet you with a smile. I will remember this experience forever.
Stayed at this "hotel" before and after my Kilimanjaro climb. On the first stay at dinner I was met with a "hey you, you pay me for beers now" this was shouted across the room in front of my whole tour group which was quite embarrising. This was after he said we pay for drinks in the morning. Then on my return the same waiter decided to get in my face after I had 2 beers saying I must pay before I get in a cab (we were going out for dinner as the food at the hotel was not of a good standard) he was not happy by our choice and I can only assume is why he decided to abuse me in front of my whole group when we were leaving. I then said to him if he continues to act the way he does he will receive a negative review from me. At this point his attitude towards me changed and he became apologetic but too little too late so here's the review. Apart from this guy constantly harassing me I found the shower to be ridiculously small and the hot water not to work even after I turned the water heater on 30 mins before shower. If you do decide to stay here I must say do not order what the call the fish and chips as it's actually bones and chips the fish has no meat on it and the food is not cheap. Also the beers are double the price of other hotels in Kilimanjaro as a lot of tour groups stay here and hence the hotel can dictate their prices to a degree.…
The Lodge is well appointed with clean quiet rooms and a large restaurant with expansive menu. The staff is friendly and very accommodating. I had the misfortune of getting altitude sickness and Teddy and the staff treated me like family ( or perhaps even better!). Teddy took me to the local clinic after hours, arranged to have a doctor called in to treat me and stayed for hours until the procedures were done. They prepared special foods I could retain in my illness. I could not have asked for better service and care from a hotel staff. The fact that the hotel is a nonprofit dedicated to supporting the adjacent school is a commendable effort and I was happy to support it as well. The hotel is at a short distance from Moshi, but they are happy to take you in for tourism. A very good place to stay and good purpose as well. Highly recommended.…
We stayed here for a couple nights prior to our Kili climb with Peak Planet & one night after the climb. Happy that this was the accommodation chosen with our package! I would absolutely stay here again if in the Moshi area. Pros (a long list): The staff is incredibly warm & friendly. Shoutout to Teddy & Innocent. I hope that you two (along w/the rest) have a fantastic Kili climb! I genuinely hope to hear more about it & so happy for you all to go on this adventure. Everyone at Stella Maris was more than helpful & thankful to Teddy for showing us around the school & introducing us to a classroom. Also thanks for helping us coordinate a last minute waterfall & coffee tour (be prepared to pay in cash for this one). Can't say enough positives about the staff (leave a good tip!) Thanks to Innocent for the shuttles/driving to Moshi & the airport. The rooms are spacious & have ample natural light. Each one has a balcony & we especially liked being on the rooms away from the parking lot & facing the garden. It was so peaceful just to rest out on the balcony in the mornings & evenings. It was also easy to hang a few items of hand washed clothes to dry. Love the little details, like the wrapped soaps. It was also a huge plus to have a little hot water pot in the room to use for coffee or tea. The breakfast buffet is pretty extensive, a little tricky if you are gluten-free, but otherwise very delicious and filling. Pro-tip for ordering food otherwise: Order at least an hour in advance. I only ordered dinner once, but the dish was good (some type of chicken & rice with veggies/sauce...sorry, as I don't recall the name) and a large portion that I probably could have split. Possible? con: Stella Maris is kind of located "in the country" so it is a perfect home base before & after the trek (pro) but a little trickier if you would like to eat elsewhere/travel around. You need to get other transportation to and from. This is only a con if you want to be more in-town. Again, the flip-side is that Stella Maris is so peaceful & calm that it might change your mind on the location. So this really isn't necessarily a "con" haha. Just a heads up. Room for improvement: The showers are a little tricky to figure out, specifically the hot valve. I actually got a second degree burn on my pinky finger and toe as the water gets scalding hot. So be really careful, especially if you have kids or even for yourself to shower. That is probably the only real "con" that I would be careful. We did store our locked luggage in a room, but I think we would have preferred to count/account for all of our valuables before leaving them for 10 days. The process was a little chaotic, which may have been related to multiple guests coming/going at the same time. Nothing happened with our stuff, it was secure. But it did cause us some stress to think we had valuables (passports, cash, etc) and no real "proof" of that anywhere. Overall: Other than a few items that could be improved, still giving Stella Maris 5 stars because it really was a solid place to stay in Moshi! Also the outside spaces were very relaxing. The wi-fi was pretty decent (this is Tanzania! I actually did not know what to expect) and although it goes in and out, it is mostly consistent especially if you are downstairs near the common space. Asante sana, Stella Maris. …
