I was longing for a time-out after three intense month of field work at Kilimanjaro. Among the many choices of places at Kilimanjaro that would allow me to relax and recharge, I decided for Kaliwa Lodge, and this was the best decision I could have taken: relaxing in the hammock on the dock, being immersed in the greenery of the rainforest and the sounds of the many birds, and enjoying a stunning view on Kibo and Mawenzi (while the sun was rising). In addition, the coffee was outstanding (not watery at all but how you would expect coffee to taste!) and the food very delicious. I can’t complain about the service at all: all staff was friendly and supportive throughout my entire stay. Asanteni sana, Kaliwa Lodge team!
The room was nice, modern and clean. The hotel staff was friendly and helpfull. The food was fresh and good. But the best part was the terrace and the view! You can see the Kilimanjaro and rain forrest from there.
Visited Kaliwa Lodge few days ago. To start positively, it is such a beautiful place, calm, quiet, peaceful area with amazing views. We sat by the terrace overlooking the vast breathtaking view in front of us and the wondrous Mt Kilimanjaro in sight (briefly!). Now to the negatives, overall service was very poor, it took 30mins to get us the menu and another 30mins to actually get the drinks we ordered (we were 3 ladies and 1 child). Food took 1.5hrs and when it came the presentation and taste was terrible. We ordered the sandwich of which the toasted bread was hard and barely eatable, the filling was plain and tasteless. We also ordered Guacamole, but what we got was plain mashed avocado spread on 2 slices of bread. We were left alone by the terrace for hrs without a waiter in sight to come and check on us. I could write an endless review, but all in all we were extremely disappointed in how we were treated, the overall service and especially the food. Please Kaliwa Lodge, could you greatly improve on how you treat local residents who come for a visit, improve on your services, food and hygiene. Very disappointed! …
Lovely rooms with nice interior and good beds. The food was super good and the staff was very helpful and friendly! Perfect place to relax before or after hiking Kilimanjaro. After 8 days on the mountain this was so luxurious. Thank you for a lovely stay.
Kaliwa Lodge is a gem set on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro. While the weather was not cooperative for the majority of my stay, the last day revealed the stunning view of snow covered slopes all the way up to Uhuru peak. Even apart from the view, the setting is idyllic and peaceful, like a zen retreat. Service was incredibly attentive, and food was delicious.
With an infant, we are always looking for a place to stay not too far and with a relaxing atmosphere. Kaliwa provided all of that. We really enjoyed spending time with the baby out on the deck all day, especially at sunrise/sunset. The food was delicious and the service wonderful. Overall, there are some hikes/tours to do, but with the baby we did not go on them. For a 1 night stay with some of the best Kili views (if you get up early/time the sunset), it was the perfect stay!
Really enjoyed staying here and i would highly recommend anybody in the Kilimanjaro region to stay here. The staff was what set everything apart. We really enjoyed hanging out with them. The food was amazing. I did not have any expectations but was just blown away with the talent of the chef. She put together meals that was as good as any restaurant that i have been to across the globe. We certainly felt like we were at home while we were there. Only regret was we wish we had more days to stay. Look forward to visiting again someday.
The location was perfect, as we wanted to be close to Kilimanjaro and to have a good view of it. Kaliwa is located in the middle of an agricultural zone, filled with very nice and friendly people. It is a very well-run hotel, with good rooms, beds, pillows, etc., but the highlight is its personnel. The warmth, efficiency, friendliness, and devotion to good service shown by Justina, Josephine, Vivian, and Lina (the chef) were in fact remarkable, in itself a justification to go to Kaliwa. The sensation of being appreciated as a visitor was overwhelming. The food is incredible, starting with breakfast which was out of this world in its completeness and its quality, all meals were an experience of different flavors, with the best ingredients. Because at this time of year it gets a bit fresh in the evening, we always had a fire in a cozy living room, with wonderful books to look at, enjoying a perfect gin and tonic, waiting to be served another wonderful dinner. Service went beyond the hotel, as Justina organized a hike to Kilimanjaro with Edmund, a fantastic guide, motivated, with good English, and very knowledgeable, while taking care of the recovery of our luggage which had been misplaced between Kenya and Tanzania, and it was waiting for us when we returned from Kilimanjaro. Kaliwa's deck, overlooking a river, with Kilimanjaro in the background, is something truly special. I congratulate the owner for running such a good operation, something in which the quality of her personnel obviously plays a very relevant role.…
Fantastic stay. Great lodge and location a few kilometers away from macheme gate. Nice garden and a deck with a view over kilimanjaro. The staff is really friendly. Always please to help and fulfill your desire to make your stay enjoyable. The food in the evening is really good. The best hotel I have stayed in Tanzania. Really 5* services. Thanks to them again
Stylish and modern small boutique hotel. Very quite and relaxing stay. Staff and owner are outstandingly friendly and very service oriented. We also enjoyed the restaurant and bar very much. The Mt Kilimanjaro view from the terrace is incredible and I suppose the best one you can get outside of the park. We also enjoyed a trip to the river and waterfall nearby as well as a visit to a local coffee farm. Airport pickup worked perfectly as well.
