Butiama Beach provided a great setting for a grand family vacation in Tanzania. The day trip organized by the hotel are well organized and priced smart. The drink and food service is excellent, particularly during dinner. In terms of the snack/light fare is good, but is not comparable to the culinary experience of Dinner. The bathroom amenities are great (Inaya...

Butiama is a nice lodge on Mafia Island, the rooms are simple but functional, and the views are perfectly relaxing. Moise & Maura run the lodge, we didn't see much of Maura but her husband Moise was kind and helpful. The rest of the staff were friendly and quick to say hello and ask how you're doing during your stay....

We visited Butiama twice because we like it so much. The beautiful rooms with seaview, the food and the hospitality where just as good as our first visit. Considering the isolation of Mafia island it's really something to be able to offer this constant quality of service, rooms, day trips, and drinks (try the cocktails!). Besides the whale sharks, the...

Butiama is more expensive but worth it if you can possibly stretch to it. Everything is tastefully finished by lovely Maura and Moyes and the staff are so friendly and helpful. Huge smiles. We always left our beautiful, quiet, private, beachfront bungalow unlocked with absolutely no concerns. Great day trips, floor less organisation. Picked up and dropped off from the...

This hotel comes highly recommended. We were greeted warmly at the airport and at the hotel. The flight across in a small plane from Dar was easy to arrange. The hotel is 10 minutes from the airport and free transfers are provided. The location is lovely - beach front, with just a few fishermen around. It's very peaceful. The rooms...

We stayed at Butiama for 5 nights after a week safari in Tanzania. Mafia Island is best reached by plane from Dar es Salaam (30 minute flight). We were met by people from Butiama at tiny Mafia Airport. Our stay was amazing! You pay quite some money, but if you can afford, it is definitely worth every cent! Food is...

We stayed here for a week at the end of a Tanzanian trip specifically to chill out after a hectic time at home and on holiday. The room was absolutely lovely although we had to ask for an extra fan as the nights were extremely hot. The breakfasts were really nice and you can get a cafetiere of coffee if...

We couldn't have picked a better spot of our honeymoon. We went in January, which proved to be hot and humid with a constant breeze (day and night) that was cooling and not a nuisance at all. The chalet was clean and tidy (with a safe to lock up your valuables, although it's not necessary - we left our things...

The hotel is ideally situated, close to where you see the whale sharks, so it is a very short boat ride to go see them. The sea water in front of the hotel wasn't the cleanest water, but I assumed it was due to the time of the year, and the whale sharks being around - they eat the plankton...

We had (after 2010) another perfect stay at the Butiama Beach this October - thanks to Maura & Moize (and, yes, the whale sharks, the snorkelling - and the delicious food). We were two families with three kids between 9 and 13. We will come again for sure. In short: If you travel to Tanzania, don't miss this wonderful place.
