Nestled at the foot of the Sneeuberg Mountain Range in South Africa, Mount Camdeboo is home to an impressive spectrum of wildlife such as white rhino, cape buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, mountain zebra, a host of antelope. If remote R&R is what you need, then the on-site spa and the constantly evolving menu of wholesome, locally inspired, refined cuisine, will do wonders for body and soul. Accommodation is in three beautifully restored, gracious gabled manors each with spacious gardens and swimming pools, and one with an additional secluded cottage. For those looking for something under canvas, two luxurious and privately located en-suite safari tents provide sweeping views over the reserve. This is a place of sweeping panoramas and undulating escarpments, extraordinary plant, animal diversity and a deeply rooted cultural heritage.

Thank you New Mark Hotels for the unforgettable two-night spoil!
Staying at Mount Camdeboo was truly an unparalleled experience!
Each staff member as well as the owner Iain passionately embrace the needs of all guests.
Rooms are classy and functional and the Manor House has such a cosy feel.
The food was outstandingly presented and delicious -again compliments to the chef and her team.
The game drives with Timothy was spectacular and extremely informative.
Wishing we could have stayed longer as we had a fantastic time and still a lot to see and experience.
Looking forward to returning soon!

The location of the actual main
Lodge is in the valley of the game park. There are a few of what looked like fairly large rooms in the lodge itself, but we stayed in the 2 ‘pods’ located about an hours game vehicle drive a away. Our friends stayed in Pod 1 and we were in Pod 2 - about 20 minutes further on from the lodge. Both pods have very different views, Pod 2 although further away had the better view.
The Pods themselves were amazing, comfortable, very remote and you feel so isolated. Each Pod has a small kitchenette with microwave and 2 gas rings and a fridge. The shower had lots of hot water and the small deck outside provided amazing views. We had a braai pit fully equipped with logs, matches and firelighters, a separate outside lounge/comfy seating area, and a wood fire outdoor spa. An Electric fence protected us from any unwanted visitors. The downside was the food…the ‘evening dinners’ provided for us to warm up as well the lunches were simply awful and very basic…such a let down with the accommodation being so awesome. No choices of food and the portions were small. More imagination could have gone into to the food preparation.
If I went again I would take my own food to prepare and braai.

We stayed in Cambdeboo Manor. The room had a separate sitting area which could be heavily curtained off if one guest is an early riser or needs to conduct business remote. The rooms also had glass french doors leading outside from the sitting area. The common area of the house was very comfortable and well appointed. House wine was included as is coffee drinks (espresso machine) and tea, cordials. The highlight was the food. Not every guest gets the same meal each night which is an unusual treat. I had the Karoo Lamb Shank for dinner one night, and although I had never been a fan of lamb, this was the best meal of our five week trip through SA, Tanzania and Kenya. Amazing chef! Ryan was a wonderful guide. Although he is fairly new to guiding, his commitment to guest satisfaction exceeded guides with much more experience. Our stay was not perfect, but that was mostly due to weather (rain 2 days) and intermittent power outages. We understand that the guide and lodge staff cannot: 1) control the weather 2) make animals magically appear 3) control the power grid, which is unreliable in SA. All the staff made every effort to cater to our needs and make our stay comfortable and enjoyable.

The staff were great especially Tish and Bridget. As a location it has magnificent scenery and the accommodation is good and tasteful.

It is a place set far off the beaten track so be aware when staying.

Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great and thus we only had one drive out to view. In this respect the viewing was good, we saw a cheetah kill and we’re close up with Harry the elephant.

We felt the food was ‘ok’. And this is one area that really disappointed us:

- There was a lack of snacks for between meals ie we had expected some snacks like Biltong, nuts and fruit to be available.

- It didn’t seem like there was sufficient food available / prepared (ie ran out of tomatoes, bananas).
Thankfully we had extra snacks from our drive in.

Also the WiFi isn’t high speed (not that it’s critical) and it’s not really a kid friendly environment. Although the staff do their best to help!

When comparing our experience to other private lodges we have stayed at we felt it was over priced for what it is.

Also I felt it odd that we were openly brought into ‘internal politics’ between a member of staff and a guest (also an employee).

Picture perfect and a fitting end to our week in this idyllic area. Staff are attentive, but not overbearing and the animal sightings excellent and game drives were a real treat with the Karoo sunsets. The views from the rooms were some of the best we have ever experienced.

I am writing this from our pod on our last full day and can safely say this place is better than we ever imagined.

The team here go above and beyond, every single need we have is met, the food is delicious and they accommodate any and all dietary needs, I am veggie and struggle with gluten, all my food is meat free and gluten free, and there is so much of it! The wine is wonderful, the mini bar is perfect, it’s just great.

The main lodge is so relaxing and beautifully appointed. The pod we are in (pod 1) has the most magnificent views, hot tub, shaded area, fire pit, secured fence, comfy bed (ridiculously comfy). It is pure luxury away from anyone up on a hill. I’ve never been so relaxed!

The game and drives, we have Tish as our ranger and I suspect what she doesn’t know about the animals and the reserve isn’t worth knowing, we are constantly asking questions and immediately Tish knows the answer. And the game viewing. Oh. My. Days. With the exception of the elusive leopard (there’s still time) we have seen everything, and not “from a distance” viewings we been able to get so close but remained so safe. We feel spoiled every single time we go on a drive with Tish.

I just can’t begin to recommend this place enough, it is phenomenal, the people are phenomenal. It’s amazing.

It is not often that an experience is phenomenal from start to finish. My three nights at Mount Camdeboo was.

I stayed in one of their pods, which was beautifully designed to maximise the most incredible view and included delicious meals, served in truly unique way. On top of that, the game viewing was awesome- experiencing cheetah on foot is something that will stay with me forever.

And if that wasn’t enough, the Mount Camdeboo staff weren’t just friendly, they went above and beyond to make my stay incredible. This even included sourcing, collecting and fitting a brand new tyre for my car after I hit a sharp rock, all while I was enjoying my game drives.

I can only say is a massive thank you to everyone who made my trip so memorable: Yolinda for all your help and the laughs, Tom for a truly remarkable cheetah experience and especially Jason for all the adventures, no matter how early the start.

I cannot recommend a trip to Mount Camdeboo highly enough, it is an absolute gem.

Our stay at Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve was absolutely fantastic.

We stayed in the Courtyard Manor House and were looked after and made to feel very special with not having to do anything. It is a comfortable, clean house with roaring fires and all the comforts for winter luxury from underfloor heating, heated towel rails, electric blankets.

The chef and team was very good and we ate beautiful breakfasts, lunches and dinners.

The only thing that needs attention is the massage therapist needs training as she did not know what she was doing and that was disappointing.

Last but not least ..... The game drives - 10/10!

Ask to book Philip. He was our game ranger, and was beyond outstanding. Knowledgeable, informative and has a great way with people. He was reliable and responsible. We felt safe at all times with him and he is master of driving that GV. We did 2 game drives per day and even a night game drive which was very exciting. We won't forget Harry the elephant and the herd of Buffalo 'face off'. We look forward to booking Philip again.

If you want a break in the bush and don't want to lift a finger, this is your place.
Well done and hope to see you soon.

This is a complete different experience if you are used to going game lodges like I am. The 1920's interior of the rooms sweeps you off your feet and brings you to other times.
Hein and Tish are amazing rangers. They are incredibly knowleadgeble and friendly. Especially for the children.
The Camdeboo Park itself is incredibly beautiful. Sometimes I forgot I was supposed to look for game because I was so distracted by the beauty of the nature. It was stunning.

At some point during our stay, I commented that if I were to design a game lodge, I would simply copy Camdeboo lock, stock and barrel. Lovely old house, large comfortable sofas, scatter rugs, bookshelves, huge fireplace; outside are large tree lined lawns , discretely placed tables and chairs for relaxing - it has everything right.
We only spent one night here as part of a road trip, but agreed that we would definitely come back for a longer stay. The reserve itself has everything, and our ranger Tim was knowledgeable and passionate. Meals were excellent and the staff were uniformly friendly and efficient.

Mount Camdeboo is adjacent to the Samara Private Game Reserve, which is distinctly more expensive. Not having stayed at Samara, I would nevertheless battle to find reasons to choose it over Mount Camdeboo considering the truly excellent stay we had at the latter.
We puzzled over why there is a fence between the two reserves. The benefits of common traversing rights have seen most fences come down between the private reserves adjoining the Kruger National Park, and on the face of it it would seem to make sense here, Naturally there may be other issues which create obstacles, but it would seem to be a goal worth fighting for.
