#1 of 21 Specialty lodging in Graaff-Reinet
Nestled at the foot of the Sneeuberg Mountain Range in South Africa, Mount Camdeboo is home to an impressive spectrum of wildlife such as white rhino, cape buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, mountain zebra, a host of antelope. If remote R&R is what you need, then the on-site spa and the constantly evolving menu of wholesome, locally inspired, refined cuisine, will do wonders for body and soul. Accommodation is in three beautifully restored, gracious gabled manors each with spacious gardens and swimming pools, and one with an additional secluded cottage. For those looking for something under canvas, two luxurious and privately located en-suite safari tents provide sweeping views over the reserve. This is a place of sweeping panoramas and undulating escarpments, extraordinary plant, animal diversity and a deeply rooted cultural heritage.

Blown away. Accommodation was incredible (we stayed in a pod on top of a mountain, with only a small electric fence between us and the big 5). The food was amazing and the staff very attentive. To be alone in this beautiful wildernesses where your hosts have exceptional attention to detail is so hard to describe ….just spectacular

SERVICE We were blown away by the service - I mean nothing was too small to ask and Yolinda sorted out a room issue within 1 minute- so professional. Shubaida (excuse spelling !) was the best waitress and restaurant co-ordinator ever . Tim was a thorough, Friendly and informative guide. LODGE AND ROOMS the lodge itself is an old farm house in the Karoo that has been done up in a comfy OUT OF AFRICA look. There are two manor houses and the bigger manor house has 4 rooms and the smaller manor house has 3 rooms. We stayed in Wild Olive in the bigger house and my children were next door and I think they were best rooms. The roaring fires in Winter were amazing !There are these secured pods but as we had kids we stayed at the manor house. I would say the lodge could do with a slight upgrade - paint , carpets - that sort of thing. FOOD Best food everrrr! Good home style breakfast with all you could ask for. Lunch is a high tea and it’s tasty snacks and dinner is amazing - lamb chops or fillet… the best I have ever eaten. I felt like I was eating in someone’s home - it was delicious 😋 GAME This is where it scored low for me- we did not manage to see much and I know it is luck, but we went out 3 x and saw Rhino, zebra, eland (from very far), warthog, giraffe , gemsbok, steenbok and one loan springbok . You would drive and drive with no sightings which was unfortunate. The views are absolutely spectacular. We love Mount Camdeboo and had the best weekend !! Thanks for everything Mount Camdeboo!!

We had such an amazing stay at Mount Camdeboo last week! From the moment we arrived, we felt like special guests - we were greeted with a personal welcome at the gate, escorted to the main lodge by Hein, our guide, offered delicious homemade lemonade (such a treat after a long, dusty drive), and shown to our beautifully luxurious rooms. The highlights of our stay included: - Dinner and breakfast every day were served in a gracious dining room with a roaring log fire, and high tea on the lawn outside or on the deep verandah overlooking the Karoo hills. The food was absolutely delicious, carefully prepared and presented. - Warm, friendly staff, making us always feel welcome and cared for. - Excellent game drives, morning and evening, with our knowledgable and charming guide Hein, for whom nothing was too much trouble. We all learned so much from him and had exceptional game sightings. It was freezing cold, and Hein made sure that there were blankets and hot water bottles in the game drive for the early mornings! These little touches went such a long way to making us feel so looked after. At the end of every drive, we were met at the lodge by the lovely Bridget with steaming hot hand towels to warm chilly hands and refresh us before the next delicious meal. - very comfortable rooms, with all the touches to make our stay extra comfortable, and the nightly turn down service with home made chocolates and fudge were a lovely touch - the exceptional views of the surrounding landscape made every game drive even more memorable. - the stunning chocolate cake for our son to celebrate his 19th birthday! All the staff from Barney, the GM, the guides, the kitchen staff and cleaning team, made us feel like part of the Mt. Camdeboo family. Thank you all, we can't wait to return.

Liked · Our two night stay at Mount Camdeboo was the ultimate treat for our little family. The accommodation is comfortably gorgeous, the views magnificent and the service superb from every single member of staff we encountered. Our game drives were wonderful, fantastic viewing and our guide, Tim's knowledge was great. We would highly recommend Mount Camdeboo Private Game Reserve to any one travelling to the Graaff-Reinet area. Spend a little more time in the region and head to the other side to take in the Valley of Desolation and the history of the town.

At some point during our stay, I commented that if I were to design a game lodge, I would simply copy Camdeboo lock, stock and barrel. Lovely old house, large comfortable sofas, scatter rugs, bookshelves, huge fireplace; outside are large tree lined lawns , discretely placed tables and chairs for relaxing - it has everything right. We only spent one night here as part of a road trip, but agreed that we would definitely come back for a longer stay. The reserve itself has everything, and our ranger Tim was knowledgeable and passionate. Meals were excellent and the staff were uniformly friendly and efficient. Mount Camdeboo is adjacent to the Samara Private Game Reserve, which is distinctly more expensive. Not having stayed at Samara, I would nevertheless battle to find reasons to choose it over Mount Camdeboo considering the truly excellent stay we had at the latter. We puzzled over why there is a fence between the two reserves. The benefits of common traversing rights have seen most fences come down between the private reserves adjoining the Kruger National Park, and on the face of it it would seem to make sense here, Naturally there may be other issues which create obstacles, but it would seem to be a goal worth fighting for.
