In the heart of Graaff-Reinet lies Avondrust, an imposing Guest House and B&B. Built in 1911 it offers you 4000m2 of gracious living as its philosophy. History Of Avondrust Guest House Avondrust - A Home from Home in the Karoo Cradled in a loop of the Sundays River, the Karoo town of Graaff-Reinet is home to some 200 national monuments. Around every corner a piece of history is revealed to the visitor. And it is here, in the centre of town, that Merino sheep farmer and breeder, Jan Stephanus Minnaar, built his dream house during 1911. Avondrust ("evening rest") was to be his retirement home. He lived here with his wife, Maria Magdalena Smuts, "Ouma Smuts". After he passed away, his daughter, Cora Luckhoff inherited Avondrust. Cora did not want to live in the house and sold it to her brother, Eduard Smuts (Eddie) Minnaar. After his and his wife's death, Cyril Minnaar bought Avondrust from the estate. His grandfather was Jan Minnaar's brother. Graaff-Reinet Accommodation Two Luxury Suites in the Manor House, one with its own private lounge and veranda, the second is upstairs with its own balcony and Bay window overlooking the front garden and water fountain. A romantic Honeymoon Suite with a king size four poster bed and slipper bath. Five Deluxe Rooms, of which one is a lofted room in the Manor House with its own balcony that has a treetop view of the garden. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with private entrances leading out into the tranquil garden behind the impressive Edwardian Mansion. All rooms boast space, privacy and comfort plus the use of a large pool overlooking the mountains. Wake up to a full country breakfast, served with a crackling fire on the side to warm up your cold winter mornings. Avondrust is within walking distance from all shops, museums and restaurants. Accommodation is offered on a bed and breakfast basis. During the 1990's, the Van Hoffen Family converted the house into a guesthouse. It is still a home away from home for guests today with Nico Hattingh and Tess Erlank as the current owners.

A two night stay at Avondrust was not enough to appreciate all its beauty and comfort in tbe town Graaff Reinet that also deserves more time. We had a suite in the main building giving onto the garden lovingly tended and full of birds. The suite was very comfortable with antique furniture. Location was ideal, very close to the town centre in a wide side street with the best restaurants in the town. The only slight surprise was that breakfast was not in-house but a voucher for a choice of 3 very local restaurant

After a long day traveling we were happy to arrive at our accommodation. Our hostess was friendly and helpful. As it is was hot we changed and went for a cool off in their pool. The size of the rooms are good, luggage is easily accommodated for opening and unpacking. Our room had two comfortable couches to watch tv, the bathroom has both a bath and a shower with plenty of space. Restaurants are either next door or in the same block. Beautiful gardens with the main house being from 1911. They do have off street parking but only a few so book a parking when booking.

This must be the place Graaf Reinet has been build around! Beautiful buildings (1911) rooms, gardens and staff. It was great staying here - thank you! It is very close to some great eateries and shops to spend your time (and money) in.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this beautiful guest house and can highly recommend Avondrust, either for a restful overnight stay or a longer stay in picturesque Graaff-Reinet. We were allocated a spacious family unit in the garden with a stoep with a view of the lovely garden. Our back door opened on to the pool area where a sparkling pool awaited. We did not really use the kitchen much but it was big and seemed well appointed. We were travelling with a teenager and a young adult and appreciated the ample space this unit had to offer. The wifi and charging station built into the desk was an added bonus. We also loved the bathroom. Although we shared the bedroom, the huge bathroom with big bath, separate shower (with huge shower head) as well as separate toilet ensured privacy. We had safe parking for our packed car. This establishment is excellent value for money and within walking distance of everything. We had a good halfway rest and will return.

The pretty main building of Avondrust guesthouse is a historical house from 1911, where they also serve the breakfast in a beautiful parlour. Our room was in a neighbouring building with direct access into the well-kept garden. The quadruple room with kitchenette offers enough space for a family and consequently more than enough for 2 persons. The house and parking lot is secured with a gate. We felt very well in these beautiful surroundings. There are nice bars and restaurants within walking distance.
