This is definitely a 'TIA' place - the bar/restaurant is nice, obviously recently renovated. It's a good place to spend hours. Which is just as well as the service is sloppy, the staff are surly and will readily ignore you for ages! When food does arrive (not guaranteed) it's often cold.
Not so the rooms. If your first impression from the outside is "shabby", you are completely right. We arrived to find none of our rooms were ready, despite it being within check-in times. Then on entering the rooms, they are old-fashioned, the beds are lumpy, the rooms are noisy (well, 5B was, it was next to the laundry on the ground floor), the wifi only works in the bar (funny that), and there are cockroaches. And they've only given each room one small hand towel, even if it's a double or a triple room. There were no apologies, no timescales for when the tumble dryer would be finished with more towels (of the same, tiny, variety). Furthermore, it's sufficiently far from the other restaurants and hotels in town that you're pretty much stuck there. Not recommended.

1) had a tiny room that was noisy-right by the road so could hear the traffic, could also hear easily my neighbors leaving/returning/locking their flimsy doors etc
2) tested my bedroom window, would be easy to open from the outside (latch did not work) I was technically on the second floor but my window faced a construction site full of workers in the daytime and despite the barbed wires, just didn't feel very secure
3) basic room and bathroom, I brought this space blanket thing for occasions where I don't feel like using someone else's blanket or sheets and this was one of those places, not that this place was filthy

On the upside
1) wireless internet in the restaurant- didn't have a chance to test this but would have been awesome
2) hot water and electricity

In sum, probably should have stayed at Goha hotel as my travel agent suggested, but chose Lammer because of the previous tripadvisor reviews

Basic, small, clean rooms (with the ubiquitous TV that doesn't work, common in Ethiopia) that do the job for a short stay. The patio area is nice and seems to attract the locals for meals and the free WiFi (which is lightening-quick by Ethiopian standards).

The property is bit of a hike from the city center, fine during the day, but I would advise taking a bajaj at night. The staff at reception is cheerful and friendly, however, be sure they don't try to charge the VAT on top of the quoted room rate.

We stayed for one night en route to Simien National Park. We chose it due to the promising reviews on tripadvisor. However, we left with mixed feelings - the food was decent and the outdoor seating was pleasant and a popular spot, but the service was pretty terrible - the waiters didn't seem to care. The breakfast was good but the morning staff were unpleasant and grumpy, and it wasn't even that early in the morning! The rooms had TVs with several channels which were a treat, and decent bathtubs/showers with hot water - but the rooms are small, somewhat scruffy-feeling, and many are too close to the road. A friend reported cockroaches (which unfortunately are common in many Ethiopian hotels) and potential food poisoning from dinner. The place has potential, but could use a scrub-down and the staff could use a shake-up!

There is a small pool, but I can't imagine anyone using it. It was small and seemed a bit dirty. That said, it's definitely worth having drinks/dinner in the hotel's garden.

The free wireless worked fine (by Ethiopian standards) in the restaurant and nearby.

What makes worthwhile this hotel is its garden, where you can dine or have just a beer in a very friendly atmosphere - nicely shared with happy representatives of the local smart people. The rooms downstairs are wide enough, clean, with a decent bathroom featuring hot water at given times of the day. The rooms upstairs, on the contrary, are reportedly very small and, on the whole, not fully agreable. The restaurant is good enough, although the selection of food is very limited. The bar and the reception, both very small but proper, are nicely characterized by a pleasant taste of real Africa. The service is corteous and efficient enough.

Stayed here at the end of the trip (2 nights) and then an extra night before coming home - the hotel is outside of town which makes it a bit more peaceful, but tuk tuks are available at a negotiated prices and can take 2 o 3 people and local buses (minivans can be used 2 or 3 birrs)

The rooms are clean and showers and toilets that work - was in A block for 2 nights and be warned that the water pump gets turned off at night and goes on again between 6 and 7 am - only a problem is you have a weak bladder or wish to have an early shower.

The food was good and service excellent - staff are friendly

The hotel does offer a complimentary taxi service to the airport at Gondar which is 14 km away - there was a problem with this despite being arranged in advance with some of our party - it either appeared late or not at all (Sat & Sun appeared to be a private car rather than the hotel blue minibus with the name on it

I used this with a friend on the Monday and used the blue minibus and the driver I am sure took the long way round despite being told it was a shorter way, and then the guy was constantly on his mobile phone and I had to ask him not to use it and concentrate on his driving this only lasted a few minutes.

A couple of things that would improve efficiency from a management point of view are the following
1) Laundry list with charges (displayed in rooms) - a list that people can hand in with their items - people did seem to be charged varying amounts
2) welcome folder in rooms with laundry list, check out times etc., bar and restaurant prices
3) safe place for luggage if you are staying after check out time
4) with pre-arranged transfer to the airport that this actually turns up at the time stated i.e. 0700 am means 0700 and not 0740 as in one case and this goes the direct route

If you are having business and tourists timings are important and this will lead to a good customer service and the things mentioned about will lead to an improved service

Not sure what else I can add to the title! Clearly we were not happy with this choice of lodging! The small, dingy room was bad enough, but the shower was actually worse: not much water, barely warm rather than actually hot.
I would NOT stay here again!

I stayed at the Lammergeyer Hotel along with my research team on a 6-week project. The environment is rustic but relaxed and comfortable. The managerial and service staff are friendly, extremely helpful, and a pleasure to be around. I enjoyed the affordability, the tasty food, the relaxed atmosphere, and reliable WiFi tremendously.

My project is five-years long and I will be returning to Lammergeyer. Over this time the staff became like family. Lammergeyer is a popular meeting place for Gondar and the social scene is vibrant. The patio is a great place to either hide out and chill or hang out and meet new people. The music is good and the ambience is always nice.

The property is a little ways from the city center but only a short Bajaj ride away. The road on which the Lammergeyer is located is undergoing fairly rapid development so it will be a bustling area with more attractions for night life (bars and shops) in the near future.

We were 3 couples who had a 5 day tour in Ethiopia. We spent one night in Gonder and stayed by Lammergeyer Hotel. The hotel and restaurant staff at this hotel gave us excellent service and served us a really good lunch and breakfast. The local injera dish we had as starter was quite nice and tasty. Actually we judged the restaurant as very good while the hotelrooms we had definitely was in need of maintenance. If it was not for the location, outside the hustle and bustle of the central city, our hotel judgement would be close to poor.
