Sonesta Ocean Point Resort St Maarten strikes a chord with guests for its stunning location, just a stone's throw from the airport, casino, and idyllic beaches. While the value is debated, with some guests questioning the extra costs, the resort's cleanliness and range of amenities, including multiple pools and diverse dining options, are consistently praised. The service team receives accolades for their attentiveness and care, although a few guests have experienced slower service. Room views are a highlight, despite criticisms of dated decor and small bathrooms. The resort's vibrant atmosphere is noted, but it may not suit everyone's taste.

We researched St. Maarten hotel venues, a wise investment. We’ve visited SXM 10+ times in the past, stayed at Maho (family side) 24 years ago, and Simpson Bay Area as well. It was a pleasure to return to where it all began. Ocean Point exceeded expectations

Service: Consistently throughout the stay, our encounters with all staff throughout the resort was very positive. They were polite, inquired if assistance was needed, and greeted with a smile.

Butlers: To say the service was impeccable would be an understatement. All Butlers provided exceptional, timely, above expectations service. They have an excellent communication system, coordinate all tasks as a team. Vigillio showed us the property and set everything above standards; Dane provided exceptional service and went out of his way to ensure all extras were on point, Alex ensured all needs were happily met. Grateful for these gentlemen.

Rooms: We stayed in a Butler’s Suite, One Bedroom Butler Penthouse unit 501. It was very very spacious, we could have managed with half the space and still had more than enough comfort. The balconies are 180, the view is a beach sunrise view. The bathroom was spacious as well. The furniture was comfortable.

Grounds: Everything is very well maintained. Our visit had pool and walkway construction underway which did not impact the property’s beauty.

Restaurants: All are first come first serve, we didn’t have a problem with seating. There is room service 24/7 and food areas throughout the property. Even the lobby bar has small refrigerated bites displayed.

Azul - breakfast buffet and omelet station was great. The chef prepared to specific expectations, much appreciated.
Portofino - dinner was good, food was delicious (smaller portions but that’s to be expected with all-inclusive)

La Fontana - we opted for the romantic dinner for two, the food was outstanding, ambiance unforgettable, and service was on point (thank you Rasheed!)

Jing’s: sushi serving was small (2 pieces), bowls were average.

Beach: The beach is small set among cliffs, water can be rough. Ocean Point offers chairs set up nicely overlooking the beach near access. Great point about St. Maarten is the numerous beaches to explore if that’s your thing.

Pools: The zero entry pool has a few swim out suites on the far side and is available for all guests, very spacious, gorgeous and relaxing. Lots of chairs to relax in. The Deck pool with cabanas offers ample chairs, bar, music (not too loud, just enough). There is the hammock village just behind this area which is nice. The main pool was shared with Maho family during our stay and more crowded for our preference.

Bars: There are many bars throughout the resort and at least one was open until approximately 11 pm.

Entertainment: Nightly band entertainment, daily music and activity entertainment as well. What’s nice about this property is you can engage louder entertainment if preferred or relax at another pool without hearing the louder.

Location: Maho is an upbeat location and offers quick taxi access to other areas of the island.

Cleanliness: I have high standards for cleanliness, our room was very clean as well as the hotel in general. I did not notice any areas that grossed me out.

Cons: We did not experience any major negatives to report. The only note is specific to my needs where the room didn’t provide good lighting for getting ready; doing hair and makeup (pack small travel makeup mirror) or electrical outlets near room mirror (extension cord needed). The week we traveled the main pool was shared with Maho guests and far too crowded for adults only and our vibe. It’s understandable work needs to be completed and it didn’t impact overall rating.

Casino: We stopped in Casino Royale, the majority of dealers were rude, pit bosses unfriendly, and unwelcoming. Past years we’ve gambled at other casinos and did not have the same experience. Will not return to Casino Royale.

Activities:
Ocean massage with Serenity Spa was amazing, better than most I’ve had in the states.

Pinel Island, quick boat ride from Marigot and you have calm waters, excellent service, very good food, and refreshing drinks.

Maho Nevis tours buggy/4 wheeler excursion - excellent way to see the entire island but too hot for my liking. Our tour guide Andre was very knowledgeable and super nice.

Off site restaurants/bars:
Palapa Hidden Oasis in Simpson Bay - Highly recommend, what a gem! Amazing food, one of kind ambiance, excellent staff and service. Truly an oasis and one of a kind experience.

Perch Bar & Grill Orient Beach - burger and wings were good, service was great, sangria was excellent.

Dirty Sanchez Crew Philipsburg - best mojito!

Le Moulin Fou Maho - best French onion soup and excellent food

There were several places closed due to off season in Oct. Disappointed to miss but if looking for an upscale dinner, I recommended Rainbow, Mario’s Bistro, and Hibiscus.

We visited last week for a milestone anniversary. We loved the resort. We had a sunset butler suite and probably did not utilize our butler to the fullest extent.

The only two things about the room that were not great were a thermostat with a bright light that shone right in your eyes as you try to sleep. Also, the balcony light came on at dark, and there was no way to turn it off. The temperature in the room was nice and cool as opposed to a previous review I read which said they could not cool the room below 73 degrees. Luckily, we were able to adjust our thermostat to a cooler setting. The mattress was very firm.

Azul Restaurant was very close to our room, and so we ate there for most meals, although we had one dinner at Portofino. One day, we had a slice of pizza for a quick bite at Pizza Napoli. It was OK. We ate a late lunch at The Palm Grill one day. We weren't overly impressed with it. It would have been nice to have more tropical drinks on the menu as well as more local dishes. However, the food was very good. The only time I wasn't happy with the food was when I ordered what was listed as tenderloin on the menu. Trying to cut into it and chew it, I'm pretty sure that was not the cut of steak that was offered.

We visited the Sunset Lounge several times, and it was a lot of fun. One night they had a band but were on an extended break, so we only heard a few songs before we left.

We spent a lot of time in the pool near the Azul Restaurant and we went to the beach twice. We went later in the afternoon to get vacant chairs. When going off the Sonesta property for beach chairs, whoever owns those chairs wants you to order drinks or food to use the chairs.,

All of the staff was very friendly and provided excellent service, particularly one of the bartenders, Frank, and Janeel at Azul -- those are the only names I remember from the restaurants/bars. Dane, Alex, and Yannick were very good butlers.

They have a very nice gym and I, unfortunately, only got there once.

The only drawback I found was the pressure to tip. Our travel agent told us that tipping was included in the price, but we had signs in the room soliciting tips for housekeeping and turn-down service.

Overall this was a great trip, and I'd love to return sometime.

My wife and I spent a week at Sonesta Ocean Point. From beginning to end we were treated to a completely wonderful experience. We stayed in one of the swim out suites, but only used the swim out pool a few times, because we enjoyed spending time at the beach or one of the other pools on the resort.

The food is Azul is excellent, and all of the staff members working at Azul were very pleasant. The breakfast buffet at Azul was also very good, with a lot of different options. We also had dinner one night ot La Fontana, which is one of the restaurants that the guests at the Maho Beach side also have access to. The food there was good, but the service was a little slower. It's a larger restaurant and there were a couple of larger groups and families there, which may account for the slower service.

The grounds and the rooms were all very clean. There were always groundskeepers and maintenance workers around, hard at work keeping everything beautiful.

A special shout out to Sheryl at the Point Pool Bar. She is by far the best bartender in the entire resort, and she always had a smile and a friendly attitude. And speaking of friendly attitudes, I want to point out that every single employee that we interacted with on the resort was friendly and helpful. I saw a few recent reviews indicating that there were some people working there who were less than friendly. We did not encounter that at all. Everyone from the housekeepers, to the maintenance staff, to the waiters, to the bartenders all had a smile and a pleasant greeting whenever we encountered them.

If there is one small recommendation that I would make to improve the experience, it would be to put a couple on ATM machines on the resort. Currently there is one ATM machine in the casino, but from what I've been told it is frequently out of service or out of cash. The next closest ATM is at the airport. So a couple of ATMs in the lobby would be very helpful.

A few notes about the surrounding area, for those wishing to venture off the resort:

* There is small casino right across the street that is worth a visit.

*Maho Beach is nice but try to get to Mullett Bay Beach at least once. It is absolutely stunning. It is walkable from the resort, but we got a taxi ($10). Two chairs and an umbrella costs $30. Just try to go on a day when the cruise ships aren't in dock, as it can get pretty crowded.

*Maho Village, the area right outside the resort, has a lot of gift shops, jewelry stores, restaurants, bars, a pharmacy, etc. As I mentioned previously, the food at Azul was excellent, but we did go off the resort for dinner one night. We had an incredible meal at Jax Steakouse.

Overall, we had a fantastic vacation at Sonesta Ocean Point, and we can't wait to return.

We attended the Sonesta Ocean Point Resort in December 2024 for one week.

The resort itself is beautiful, located on the cliff's edge and in very close proximity to the airport. There are good amenities in walkable range, including the casino and many high-end restaurants. The dining at the resort is premiere, with the Italian-inspired Portofino leading the way.

There are some notable deficiencies however that detract from the experience and place this vacation closer to a 3-Star than the advertised 5-Star experience.

Service and Staff Attitude

Service was poor to confrontational. There is absolutely no pool-side service, which is expected at any high-end luxury resort. There did appear to be staff present who were supposed to provide this service, but for whatever reason they refused to do so. Lobby staff refused to action basic requests and were both rude and unhelpful when we made inquiries of the private dining experiences and spa bookings. Bar service was mixed, with some expressing pleasantries and others appearing to be bothered at the prospect of your simple request for a beverage. We experienced at least three negative confrontations with staff that impacted our experience negatively and affected which locations we attended for the remainder of the week.

Nightlife

Nightlife is non-existent here. If you are seeking late night cocktails, music or to engage with other travelers, this is not the destination for you. The resort becomes a ghost-town after 10pm.

Beach

There is no beach to sit on. There is a small area of sand that is barely accessible and at your own peril. If you are looking for the traditional beach experience, this is not the resort for you.

Exclusivity

The Ocean Point is advertised as an exclusive/premium experience, however many key amenities are only available on the larger Maho Beach side of the property, including coffee, buffets and stores. Some of the best attractions are actually located on the Maho Beach side of the resort, including the casino bar and rooftop snack bar, which are arguably the most interesting places on the property.

Confusion

As other guests have shared, it is a challenge to ascertain where restaurants are located and when they are open. This was unusually challenging for a Caribbean destination and there is little by way of help. The resort will undoubtedly reply that this information is available on the internet or their app and while this may be true, you will be required to actively investigate what is open throughout your stay. We found this to be an annoyance, particularly as some of the restaurants were not open when they were scheduled to be open, and some never seemed open at all.

Value

Overall, the value for money is poor. You will not feel as if you are receiving a premium, exclusive experience. You are better off staying on the Maho Beach side for a lesser fee or looking elsewhere.

Dear Valued Guest, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We regret to learn that we have missed the mark in meeting some of your expectations. We take all reviews seriously and we share them with our staff so they can grow professionally while learning from constructive criticism. Rest assured the comments with regards to the teams will be addressed. As for the beach, erosion causes havoc to our coastline during this time of the year, While we do have direct beach access, depending on the weather and erosion, this fluctuates. We have pools at the resort or there are an additional 36 beaches in SXM that you can otherwise venture to. In reference to the dining and entertainment, there are daily postings throughout the resort letting guests know what is going on that evening in the entertainment space as well as advising guests about which restaurants are open. Warm Regards,

I made the best of my experience at Sonesta Ocean Point. My room didn't smell the best. I believe the smell was coming from the HVAC. The sofa had stains on it. I don't care for how the shower was made to where water got all over the floor. The waterfall shower in my room was squirting in many different directions, and it would've been great if the showerhead was adjustable. The liquor provided for the room was not a good brand, which is standard at a lot of resorts. I didn't open one bottle. The toilet needs a good amount of time before you can flush it again. Outside those issues, my room was great.

The food on the resort was decent. I enjoyed breakfast at Azul, with the exception of when I received shells in my eggs benedict. If you don't watch your table, the birds will get all over your plates, silverware, etc. Jennifer and Dianica at Azul were very friendly and attentive. The entire staff at the resort was great.

It was common for bars to run out of premium liquor. Patron and Remy went fast, but they would restock the next day. At one point, they didn't even have Sprite.

The pools shut down early, which isn't great. There was a lot of construction happening on the Maho side. The entertainment at one of the pools wasn't the greatest. The guy was not a good singer.

Overall, the experience was average at best. However, I made the best of my stay.

I stayed here for 5 days, 4 nights. I’m giving this hotel a 4 star rating because I think the pros outweigh the cons. I think the best thing about this hotel is the location. Every room faces the ocean. You get great views of planes flying into SXM. It’s walking distance to so many places like Maho Beach, restaurants, casinos, souvenir shops and more. The cold bottle of water and chilled towel upon arrival was nice since you’ll be hot from coming off the plane. The welcome drink was good and my room was ready upon arrival before the check in time. I think the resort grounds are beautiful. And a nice touch that they do is give you a chilled towel with essential oils before each meal to wipe your hands with. The food was pretty decent for it to be resort food and all of the drinks I ordered were strong so they weren’t skipping out on the liquor portions.

All the staff I encountered was nice. Special shout outs to:
*Sabby (Portofino server) - He was best server I had between all of the restaurants. They ran out of the dessert I wanted on one night but he went out of his way to talk to the pastry chef and check at the other restaurants to make sure I got it.
*Dane (Butler) - He wasn’t my butler but every time he saw me around the resort, he stopped to check in with me to see how I was doing. He also helped me out with a timely situation I was having and made sure I was taken care of promptly.
*Serth (Front Desk) - He was very friendly and helpful with my situation as well.

Now on to the cons. I think the rooms were average but with all of them having ocean views and a balcony or swim out made up for it. One night, my AC stopped working. I called the front desk and they sent maintenance over. He couldn’t fix it so they brought over a portable AC unit. I mean, it got the job done but it was pretty loud. The next day, power went out in my room briefly but came right back on after like a minute. Later on that evening, the power went out while I was dining at Portofino. Again, that one was very brief and it came right back on as well.

Other than that, I would still say I had a great time at the resort and would come back.

the welcome with the cart is great. too bad no one came with us to the room. the pool is very quiet, but the bartender is so nonchalant! he looks like he's bored, he watches videos all day on his cell phone and as soon as we come to ask him for a drink he seems annoyed that we're bothering him. What's more, before taking his shift he doesn't even go around the pool to pick up the cups and straws lying around. The spa is not great, I don't think the masseuses are real professionals, they laugh, yawn and talk to each other during the massages. The Azul restaurant is very good and the service is worthy of a star but no one informed us that we needed a shirt or polo shirt for my husband at dinner so we were never able to go there in the evening. the restaurants are all very good except the tavern which is uninteresting with unmotivated staff, not smiling and the meal really not great
the swimming pool alongside the swimout rooms is not clean, cleaning should have been done every day, it doesn't make you want to pay so much for a maintenance-free water point

There were 16 of us traveling for a bachelorette party months before we requested all of us to be together when we got to the hotel they never honored our request even though they told us we were flagged to be together. Everyone of the employees that work there were miserable. No one wants to help you thank goodness we had a Butler Rajeent and Alex who made our trip better than it would’ve been. There is no beach on the resort. You have to sit up at a makeshift beach and then walk down to the beach where you don’t get any service there so you die of thirst. we wanted it up staying at the pool where we had a miserable bartender call Cheryl. She was nasty. And she counting how many people we were cause we were getting drinks for each other. Meanwhile we paid for this she was too lazy to replenish ice tea, mint or grey goose vodka. Just a miserable lady who hates tourists. we come away to go on vacation. We’re all happy and we have to deal with nasty people, they never clean the pool and now the manager will read this and say I’m sorry that we didn’t meet your expectations because they really do not care. Some of the girls had no air-conditioning in the room and had to get a portable air conditioning in there. Some of the girls called for room service wanted a few items and were told they weren’t allowed to order more than 2. Again thank God we had butlers to help us There are plenty of other nice places on the island to visit do not stay at the Sonesta Oceanpoint. The only restaurant that was good and workers were pleasant was the AZUL we went offsite most nights to eat. Wasted money and it wasn’t cheap.

This was our 4th time at Ocean Point. That should say enough about the resort but I will provide some insight. This trip we took our 3 adult children and their spouses for a family trip at the request of my daughter & son-in-law who had been last year for their 5 year anniversary. This place just keeps getting better. I was worried about traveling with this size group but starting with Nadine the reservations supervisor who assisted me with the booking and calmed my travel anxiety through the process everything was seamless. One of my favorite things about being a repeat customer is that the staff not only remembers us, but remembers our names, drinks and food preferences. It is a testament to the resort to have long tenured employees who make us feel special. I would be remiss if I did not call out the following: Sheryl at the Ocean Point pool bar - she is simply amazing, Shingai at Azul greeted us every morning with a huge smile and met our every need, Jenneal at Azul was our waitress every night (by our request) by the end of the first night she knew everyone's names, drinks and food preferences/restrictions and entertained us to ensure we had an wonderful experience, Romaine who works at multiple bars makes the best drinks and has the quietest sense of humor that you might miss if you aren't paying attention! I also want to recognize Saunny at the front desk who personally handled an issue with my son's room ensuring everything was taken care of quickly and to their expectations. We will be back for sure!

We stayed here over New Year’s Eve on the adults-only side, and it was a fantastic choice—especially since the connecting property seemed overrun with kids. Overall, I have very few complaints about the hotel. The grounds were immaculate, and most of the staff were friendly, although a couple seemed a bit annoyed when asked questions.

One highlight of our stay was the exceptional service at Azul, thanks to our waitress, Matt. Her dedication to going above and beyond really stood out, and whoever she reports to should be confident in her excellent customer service. Another standout was the bartender at our hotel (unfortunately, I didn’t catch her name). One day, she was also bartending outside at the large shared pool and was consistently kind and engaging, making our visits to the bar a pleasure.

We only tried the breakfast buffet once, so I can’t comment on the dinner options there. We did, however, visit the outdoor grill several times, and the hamburgers and hotdogs were absolutely amazing. We also dined at the Asian restaurant one evening, which was just okay—not great. The restaurant was uncomfortably cold, and we noticed several other guests commenting on how chilly it was.

The adults-only bar was well-stocked with great options, and our room came with three large bottles of liquor and a bottle of champagne, which was a thoughtful touch.

My only two complaints are minor but worth noting. First, the beach chair process was unclear—we weren’t sure if they needed to be rented or how to secure one. Second, the adult pools lacked energy and were pretty boring. It would have been great to have at least one pool on the adults-only side with lively music, rather than having to go to the shared pool for a more vibrant atmosphere.

Despite those small issues, this was an amazing vacation overall, and I’d highly recommend the resort!

Room Tip: Bring plenty of bug repellent! The mosquitoes are horrible on the resort.

We were on the second floor facing the quiet pool and ocean. We could see all the planes coming in, noise didn't bother us. Sorry, I don't know the official name of the room. It was nice. Have fun!
