First visit to the re-vamped Pier Hotel, one of the much enjoyed Milsoms Group. After months of closure and I'm sure a small fortune being spent I stayed and ate at The Pier with much anticipation. I think the style is described as Shabby Chic and it is certainly well and expensively done. But if you start off with a... More

We stayed one night in room 1 on July 13, my partner's 50th birthday. The reception at the hotel was amazingly friendly and accommodating, we had a lovely dinner and thoroughly enjoyed our room which was spacious with a very comfortable bed and two widows overlooking the sea just outside. We could not have asked for more! Highly recommended!

We were looking forward to having dinner at the Pier, the tables are too close together and the waitress had to lean over our guest to serve me. We ordered fish pie, plaice and liver which were all beautifully cooked but the lack of vegetables was a shame as we had not ordered from the side dishes. We had different waitresses... More

This was the first time I have dined there since the refurbishment. I found the seats a lot more comfortable than the old ones, they now use wooden tables upstairs which I suppose saves on the laundry bill although linen is still used in other parts of the establishment. My friend and I both had fish & chips, utterly delicious.... More

Despite the recent refurb its unfortunately the same old same old here.... Food is overpriced for what you get and the service is average. The fish pie (not cheap!) does not even come with a salad or garnish!! (Hardly an expensive accompanyment). Unfortunately making the place look a little more attractive does not address the fundamental flaws with The Pier....... More

Stayed for two nights in June for a little seaside break. Not quite the beachfront hotel enjoyed by my wife but the views of ships passing by and the restored lightship opposite made for an interesting stay - perhaps more of a boy's venue for the sights but definitely scored for my wife on decor (a very modern industrial chic).... We have been here in previous years for family occasions and decided to return after the recent refurbishment. It was busy even on a wet Tuesday so it took awhile to place our order. We were with old friends so the time past by in conversation until we realised that it was over an hour since placing the order. We... More

Lovely starters, prawn cocktail and duck and watermelon was a lovely combination, traditional fish and chips for main was very nice, however drinks service a little slow. The tables are too close together, you can't avoid other people's conversation!!

Decided to have lunch here with my daughter today, especially after all the hype about the refurb etc. Decided to try the upstairs part. Friendly staff, can't fault that. Lovely new décor, very modern, very nice. Drink order was taken, no problems there, then the food order was taken. By now, we'd had about 6 different girls serving! Daughter ordered... More

Had dinner yesterday at the newly refurbished restaraunt. We have eaten here once before prior to the refurbishment and i must say the improvements are excellent. We walked in of the street and got a table for two at 5:00 and even got a balcony table with great views. We both decided to have fish ( cod and haddock) and... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
We thank you for your feedback, however we do not respond to individual comments. Following on from a 1.5 million reinvestment over the last 5 months, The Pier at Harwich is once again open and set to become East Anglia's number one coastal destination for food and drink. The redefined brasserie is located on the first floor of the completely modernised 1860 listed building in historic Harwich. Experience all-day dining (all-year-round) and outdoor dining - whenever the sun shines - with a menu celebrating modern classics, an exciting grill menu and wonderful fresh fish and shellfish landed on The Pier's doorstep. Guests can select from a predominantly European wine list or enjoy Prosecco-based cocktails, craft beers and cask ales. The stripped back and raw textured interior, designed by Geraldine Milsom, makes reference to the industrious and hardworking Harwich port, but achieves a balance between function, luxury and glamour. The harbour wall is only 20 metres from the door and The Pier's newly extended first floor balcony (for drinks and outdoor dining) overlooks the water, ships and working docks. With estuary views from every table, The Pier, only a stone's throw from the confluence of the Stour and Orwell estuaries is a very special destination for lovers of great food and drink. NAVYÄRD on the ground floor is a continental bar and terrace adjacent to the working harbour, the ideal place for fun and relaxation. Cask ales, craft beers, a great drinks list, Prosecco-based cocktails and one of the most carefully sourced and extensive gin lists makes the NAVYÄRD 'the' go-to bar for The Pier's neighbours, friends and welcomed guests. The NAVYÄRD is undeniably and unashamedly a 'love letter to the continent' - celebrating and championing the influential and historic links that Harwich holds with Scandanavia and wider Europe. The wines, beers, ales, drinks list and a gin library have been sourced from across Europe and are complemented throughout the day by Nordic-inspired small-plated food. Great coffee, fresh pastries and the simplest tastiest late breakfasts (think eggs, rye bread and avocado) through to open Scandinavian sandwiches, sharing platters and fresh oysters. The 14 bedrooms are individually styled to match the seascape and take full advantage of the brilliant light that you only get when staying on the coast. Harwich enjoys glorious sunsets with molten coloured horizons and the setting sun on the Stour estuary is a special feature of staying at The Pier. All bedrooms are equipped with complimentary soft drink mini-bars, Aromatherapy Associates bathroom products, Sky In-Room and free Wi-Fi making The Pier an exceptional small hotel. ... more   less
