Nowadays I rarely feel motivated to write a review, today is different. We booked the Port Gaverne Hotel for a 2 night break but shortly afterwards were dismayed to find several poor reviews. Having decided to contact the hotel to seek clarification, we were dismayed to find no one answering the telephone which always switched to voicemail- which ironically told you that you could not leave a message. Things improved when we received a reply to our e mail responding to our request for information about our room. Never less we arrived with some trepidation. We are pleased to post that we have had a lovely stay. The room was lovely in every way. The staff were really nice, helpful and efficient and we had a splendid meal in the evening on both nights. It is a mystery to us as to why such poor reviews have been posted recently, our stay was at an extremely busy half term week and we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay.

The menu was good but too expensive and attracts non-residents which is part of the reason that our stay was a disaster. Most but not all of the waiters were good and friendly and particularly 2 we remember, Chris and Oscar I made a special request on booking the hotel to include half board. This was unanswered so I telephoned the hotel and was dissuaded from that taking half board. Despite these requests on arrival at the hotel the dining options proved to be very limited with the restaurant fully booked except an early time on the 1st evening and then the only possibility being a small overflow room the 2nd evening and the bar on 3rd both at 6.15pm. We were not told the hotel operates a 2nd sitting. On the third evening a waitress arrived at our table saying she always gets the bad jobs, handed us our bill saying she could not take our dessert order rudely adding that we must leave the table now because people are waiting. We could not even order coffee or have a drink from the bar because the hotel takes dining bookings for every available space leaving nowhere for residents other than to spend the evening in their small bedroom with one chair for 2 of us. I made my complaint to the manager who was unapologetic shifting the blame to us for not reading the small print in their booking confirmation email. An email we had not received because our confirmation email came from Booking.com. I must add the breakfast rush (9am) should be avoided as the kitchen can’t manage, taking nearly 2 hours the first day and not much better on the last day.

Sadly we too have been victims of the poor descriptions of the actual room booked. We thought we were booking an elegantly furnished twin room with seating area. What we got was a small basically furnished attic room with very reduced headroom and no seating area. It was only suitable for children and in no way worth £181 paid. The reservations manager was deeply unhelpful not acknowledging any part of our complaint stating that we had a flat screen TV! Our dinner was average and we don’t think we were seated in the restaurant as booked. Breakfast order of avocado and poached eggs appeared with piped guacamole instead of fresh avo. Very strange and not pleasant. Very disappointed with our stay as we were looking forward to it. A small reduction was agreed from our dinner bill as some type of compensation. Totally inadequate.

We have stayed at this hotel several times albeit some considerable time ago. We were then very young and expectations much lower. Nothing has changed in 20 years except the ridiculous price! When booking I presumed the hotel had a complete makeover as price of rooms was top level. Not a bit of it the room was completely below standard, very tired, scruffy and verging on the dirty! The staff could not care less and when we arrived everything was chaotic and disorganised. The manager was downright rude and totally unhelpful. Food was average and service poor. I did not feel safe as thought Covid measures were not being adhered to. I would not recommend anyone who is discerning to set foot in this hotel. The rooms are totally overpriced.

1. Waited outside in blustering wind and rain for nearly 15 minutes due to bad organisation. Eating into our 1hr 45min table allocation. 2. Shown to a dusky empty back room with tired decor, large meeting style table set for too many people with torn placemats and spare chairs stacked next to it. 3. Crab starter delicious but requested medium rare steak very over cooked snd tasteless. No time to get changed. 4. Staff touching drinks and plates more excessively than needed with a bit of Covid training. 5. Slow entry and service meant we were asked to leave as soon as we finished our main course and told we couldn’t have pudding or coffee. The table staff were lovely by the way but management, organisation and horrible room (which could have been much nicer) made this a very bad experience for our limited stay in Cornwall.
