#6 of 14 B&Bs / Inns in Kirkby Lonsdale
The Barbon Inn and Restaurant near Kirkby Lonsdale has been around since the 1650s and started life as a farmhouse. Situated in the peaceful and tranquil village of Barbon, this country inn offers old world elegance in its accommodation restaurant and pub. The Barbon serves traditional English cuisine with a modern twist. Specialty dishes using local produce with choices like confit duck leg served with dauphinoise potatoes, sautéed leeks and a rich blackberry sauce; menu choices change with the seasons. The inn has an excellent wine list which has been a labour of love for one of the owners, and she will help you select from the connoisseurs list. The Barbon Inn has 10 bedrooms one with a four-poster bed. It’s located halfway between the Lake District National Park and the Yorkshire Dales National Park which makes it the perfect base for exploring both. The pastoral feel is added to by a local racetrack that holds the Barbon Hill Climb.

Dined here with friends for a local hill climb event at the hall. Some very fine cask beers on offer and my beef stroganoff was first class. The large dining tables were a plus no rubbing of elbows! Service was there when required.

Booked day before for quick night away for husband's birthday. Room comfortable and clean with good tea/coffee facilities. Mattress very comfortable. Nice space for en suite, excellent shower. Cosy feel which generally leans towards used look, but nice all the same. Bar staff in afternoon very friendly, made us feel welcome and included in local conversation. Lovely fire, good beer and great service. There is a good sized seating area to rear in the garden. Evening meal was pleasant in room next door, though I found the tables too big for couples, which most of us were. I kept waving at my husband across the expanse, though some might prefer the space I suppose. It is a short drive to Kirby and pleasant walk along the river. Stopped at Red Lion for a nice pint and did the usual browsing in shops.

The boast of the Barbon is its cosiness. Forget it. We went on a Travelzoo offer and if we had paid the full cost we would have left immediately. However, we had paid in advance and it was a busy festival weekend in the area, so we were left with no choice but to stay there. There is no ‘reception’ - you pick up your key from a table and tick off your name, then find your own room. Room 6 is a twin-bedded one, so small there was no room even for a chair, so nowhere to sit except the bed. You could hardly squeeze round the end of the bed and we took to throwing things across to each other to prevent having to traverse the south col, as it were. The room hadn’t been decorated for about 40 years, at a guess. It was not clean. The door bore signs of forced entry and poor repair. The pillows left me with a crick in my neck. The bathroom had the worst shower imaginable. A large person would not have managed to get in it. The sliding doors were off their sliders and there was hardly room to have a shower at all. It was filthy - damp and mould around all the seams, dirty skirting boards and an archaic towel rail. We ate in the restaurant on our first night. Big mistake. The food was imported frozen stuff and the vegetables were beyond description. The people (I can’t call them chefs) in the kitchen were scruffy. The waiting staff were friendly, but kept making mistakes. We saw no sign of Management, in any sense of the word. All the decor was shabby. The cushions in the ‘snug’ were dirty and tatty. There was no comfort to be found, except to sit in our car in the car park and read, which we did. Amazingly, the visitors book was full of glowing comments, on which I can pass no judgement, except to wonder if the rest of the rooms were better than Room 6 and people don’t expect high standards of cooking and cleanliness when they go away from home.

I am so sorry to hear your comments Mrs Speedwell61 it must have been tiresome for you to have put up with all the above for three days. It never fails to surprise me the depths some people will stoop in order to relieve their frustration. Had you kept your promise and returned the call, your registration form would have been completed and you would have been furnished with all the information about our check in times etc. I would also have been able to offer you an alternative room, but since you failed to keep that promise we could only treat your booking as provisional. I find your comments offensive and malevolent and trust that Trip advisor will do their duty.

Came here inadvertently due to our first choice being busy and am glad we did. Chosen because it was dog friendly in tb e bar area, i chose the rack of ribs and my wife chose the veg Korma. Both very tasty and ribs had plenty of meat on them. The staff were very chatty and welcoming and provided water bowl for the dog. Well worth a visit if in the area

The perfect, quaint little getaway off the beaten track. Gorgeous little village, even in the rain. The welcome was friendly and laid back and the little bar well stocked. The room, though small, had all that was required but needed a lick of paint here and there. Bathroom was very small as was the bed. I'm over 6ft and struggled a bit. Comfy though. The evening meal was excellent. Very tasty, plentiful and reasonable value. Service was, again friendly and personable. Good hand pulled beers in the bar. Excellent choice of wines. Breakfast was a little disappointing, I think they were short of beans. I got about 12, served in a little pot for some reason?? They did bring more toast on request. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would come back.
