This place is amazing. Yes, you might be able to see a maned wolf and that in itself is spectacular but it is so much more! The rooms are basic yet clean but sleep in a monastery has a special feel. The whole area is perfect for hikes and be sure to stay at least 2 nights to enjoy this super super special place! One night is such a shame as it will not permit you to make a nice long hike.

While visiting the awesome "Santuário do Caraça", within the "Reserva Particular do Patrimônio Natural do Santuário do Caraça", staying at "Pousada do Caraça" is the most convenient lodging option. Very, very simple rooms and bathrooms. No TVs or wi-fi in the rooms. Every evening, at 7:30PM, the few wolves (known as "lobos-guará", an endangered species) still living within the park premises are fed by the monks on the "adro" in front of the church. But don't count very much on it, as on some evenings they don't come by. Masses are said at the "Igreja de Nossa Senhora Mãe dos Homens" from Monday to Friday at 6PM, on Saturdays at 8PM and on Sundays at 11AM. As the park closes at 5PM, only those that are guests at the "Pousada do Caraça" can attend mass or watch the wolves feeding. Enjoy!

My wife and I loved our stay at the Pousada do Caraça. A pilgrims' hospice built in the drawn to the simplicity of either a religious retreat or a nature retreat (or both). Though they are spartan, I give the rooms the highest ranking because they fit perfectly the ethos of the place. The church invites meditation and prayer, and the complex sits alone int he midst of extraordinary natural beauty, which draws one out on the excellent hiking paths. The highlight, though, is seeing the maned wolves who come many nights to eat food left out by the priests. It's hard to describe the thrill of seeing these exotic, wild, and beautiful animals ascending the steps to the small square before the church's doors, a space ringed by the day's guests who gather for this amazing spectacle.
