If you are considering a destination wedding this place is awesome. I live in the states and planned this destination wedding there in July. There communications were amazing! Made it so easy for me. I was extremely happy with everything. When we got there it was exactly what they said. The capel was so cute, the service was great, the... More

Having never stayed in a castle before, we thought this would be a novel experience and we were right! We knew not to expect a brand new facility - it's a castle, it wasn't built yesterday. With that knowledge, we were extremely happy with our one night at Markree. The receptionist was delightful and very helpful. Enjoyed our drink in... More

Just home today from an over night stay in Markree castle, an unexpected surprise from the hubby! We loved every minute of it. It really is a proper castle! The smell of an open fire welcoming you as you come up the stairs from a huge fireplace. The staff were lovely and all really helpful and welcoming, as it was... More

I've stayed at several castle hotels in Ireland and in some, the castle ambiance disappears as soon as you walk in the door. Not so with Markree Castle Hotel. Just as you lift your dropped jaw from the exterior, you're greeted with a regal staircase to the wood paneled entry/reception. For those who might be challenged by the daunting entry... More

We stayed for 2 nights in the Markree Castle in the first week of September and we both loved it. It was exactly what we were looking for in a genuine castle experience in Ireland - yes the furniture is creaky and a bit tired looking but what do you expect - its a castle! The food was excellant and... More

I have read most of the bad reviews on here, and I see why they were disappointed, but you have to know where you are staying, a 350year old Castle. We stayed in the Johnny Cash room (8) it was just up the stairs from reception. The room was "dated" but really added to the whole Character of the place.Beds... More

When we first saw the impressive edifice as we drove down the driveway, we couldn't believe that we would be staying here. Imagine...a castle!! The smell of a wood fire greeted us as we entered. A long stairway led up to the reception desk where there was indeed a welcoming fire crackling in the large fireplace. It took the chill... More

Our stay here was wonderful. Exceptional staff. Good food. Lovely grounds. Superb location. But the rooms feel like you're in a flop house. There are chips and cracks, peeling paint, shoddy old rugs, broken faucets, bubbled ceilings, burnt lampshades, and ripped sofas and chairs. This is a four star hotel with 1 star rooms.

My husband and I decided at fairly short notice to go away for a night over the August Bank holiday. I have used the Best Loved Hotels site successfully in the past and chose an excellent value deal of 1 night B&B + dinner in Markree Castle. It is a truly unusual property being a 350 year old castle with... More
