Being a well seasoned traveller, I've stayed in some pretty awesome places throughout the world but the Old Monastery is in a league of its own and for good reason. From the moment your toes step over the threshold, your whole body just sinks into relaxation mode. This place is alive with colour and texture and life. It was like... More

I wont lie, as I entered the hostile I was taken aback (in a good way). The clutter that is present across the whole hostel, worked in its own special way. However this 'surprised-novelty' feeling I experienced on entrance soon wore thin. The owners came across incredibly hostile to the point of rude the longer and longer we stayed and... More

I stayed in a dorm for one night. I stayed a few years ago, and this time found things much cleaner. I was met by a very friendly person who was working at the Old Monastery. It's a beautiful building, in an exquisite location. Unfortunately I missed the breakfast, I wanted to climb Diamond Hill early - so can't comment... More

As a group of geology students we've stayed at some very basic hostels in remote places for field trips and we're generally not too fussed about conditions. This place however, took the proverbial piss. To be fair, the food the owners lay on is of good quality but often got repetitive with the same beef stew and soup at least... More

The hostel is a great starting point for hikes in the Connemara national park just next to it or just to spend some relaxing days. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The best point about the hostel is, that it doesn´t seem to be business but more a second home with a relaxed atmosphere. You might get no perfect... More

We enjoyed the hostel for it's cosy common room and basic amenities. The place needs a good clean though and A LOT of rubbish thrown away. We had a good experience staying there and enjoyed the breakfast...get there early though, otherwise you might not get a boiled egg! I would definitely suggest this place to some of my friends, but... More

Good location, just behind the Connemara National Park. Uncommon place with many things like in a bric-a-brac shop which give some charm to the place. BUT the owners were just cold, terrible, strict and at the end not welcoming at all... Fortunately, we just camped and so, we didn't need to be a lot in contact with them except for... More

This is my first critique on trip advisor. We had a splendid time in Ireland and stayed at lovely B&B's, campsites and hostels. We camped at the old monastery hostel for 2 nights, because it was listed in the LP Hiking Guide. Me and my boyfriend are from Amsterdam and we hang out in squats and alternative spaces in Amsterdam... More

That was the worst hostel I've been so far!!! The location and decoration might be good, but the condition of the hostel is poor. It's very dirty and it stinks. They do composting, what I generally like, but because they don't cover it (outside AND in the kitchen) it's full of these little flies! The signal of the Wifi is... More
