My dad stayed here last month and found the owner very friendly with a warm and homey atmosphere to the whole place. The art and music and general aesthetic of the place is very special. The hostel has a lovely welcoming and relaxed vibe.

This place is unique, it's not your typical hostel and perhaps that's why the reviews are so polarised. I've stayed a number of times and find it so refreshing and relaxing. Stephen the owner is a really sound and interesting man, very honest, but if you are expecting a homogenised hostel worker, you won't get it in him! The rooms...

Second time to visit - this time with 4 families with young kids, lots of interesting stuff scattered everywhere and the rooms are really funky. Kids exploring inside & outside and playing with the chickens! Had a great two nights, breakfast in the morning, fresh eggs and brown bread and tea and coffee. It's right on the Connemara national park...

This hostel is a marvel and its great that places like this can still exist in Ireland. You will either love it or hate it, and you wont find any red tape here either. Every wall of the hostel is a work of art, every windowsill has some form of sculpture on it, and you will see something different every...

There was no kettle, no hot water in taps or showers, no oven/grill/toaster. The decor was funky and there was a cool alternative vibe however there was too much tat lying around including random collections of animal skulls. The hippy owner verbally accosted my boyfriend in the middle of the night and nearly hit him for walking into a room...

Being a well seasoned traveller, I've stayed in some pretty awesome places throughout the world but the Old Monastery is in a league of its own and for good reason. From the moment your toes step over the threshold, your whole body just sinks into relaxation mode. This place is alive with colour and texture and life. It was like...

I wont lie, as I entered the hostile I was taken aback (in a good way). The clutter that is present across the whole hostel, worked in its own special way. However this 'surprised-novelty' feeling I experienced on entrance soon wore thin. The owners came across incredibly hostile to the point of rude the longer and longer we stayed and...

I stayed in a dorm for one night. I stayed a few years ago, and this time found things much cleaner. I was met by a very friendly person who was working at the Old Monastery. It's a beautiful building, in an exquisite location. Unfortunately I missed the breakfast, I wanted to climb Diamond Hill early - so can't comment...
