This hostel is a marvel and its great that places like this can still exist in Ireland. You will either love it or hate it, and you wont find any red tape here either. Every wall of the hostel is a work of art, every windowsill has some form of sculpture on it, and you will see something different every... More

There was no kettle, no hot water in taps or showers, no oven/grill/toaster. The decor was funky and there was a cool alternative vibe however there was too much tat lying around including random collections of animal skulls. The hippy owner verbally accosted my boyfriend in the middle of the night and nearly hit him for walking into a room... More

Being a well seasoned traveller, I've stayed in some pretty awesome places throughout the world but the Old Monastery is in a league of its own and for good reason. From the moment your toes step over the threshold, your whole body just sinks into relaxation mode. This place is alive with colour and texture and life. It was like... More

I wont lie, as I entered the hostile I was taken aback (in a good way). The clutter that is present across the whole hostel, worked in its own special way. However this 'surprised-novelty' feeling I experienced on entrance soon wore thin. The owners came across incredibly hostile to the point of rude the longer and longer we stayed and... More

I stayed in a dorm for one night. I stayed a few years ago, and this time found things much cleaner. I was met by a very friendly person who was working at the Old Monastery. It's a beautiful building, in an exquisite location. Unfortunately I missed the breakfast, I wanted to climb Diamond Hill early - so can't comment... More

As a group of geology students we've stayed at some very basic hostels in remote places for field trips and we're generally not too fussed about conditions. This place however, took the proverbial piss. To be fair, the food the owners lay on is of good quality but often got repetitive with the same beef stew and soup at least... More

The hostel is a great starting point for hikes in the Connemara national park just next to it or just to spend some relaxing days. The owners are very friendly and helpful. The best point about the hostel is, that it doesn´t seem to be business but more a second home with a relaxed atmosphere. You might get no perfect... More
