Setting feels wonderfully remote even though it’s close to Golden Circle sights. To a person, the staff were gracious and accommodating. Our room was extremely comfortable (though oddly missing some basics like body lotion, hair conditioner, and slippers/flip flops for the short walk to the hot tub). The prix fixe dinner, which we did one night, is a treat. I want to particularly recommend the guide that the hotel arranged for us—Havar Sigursjonsson. Havar took us on a full-day adventure in the highlands and it could not have been better. He was professional, knowledgeable, funny—highly recommend!
This was an excellent stay in Iceland. The accommodations are both unique and comfortable. We enjoyed learning about how the buildings are made with Austrian reclaimed farm wood. It is quite beautiful. The fixtures in the rooms are beautiful! (I fell in love with the bathroom!!). Julian is one of the most warm and kind receptions at any establishment. He was so helpful in making sure our stay was comfortable and a wonderful one. The setting is spectacular in the middle of the field surrounded by beautiful mountains. We had such a wonderful experience here. It is quiet and lovely and away from all of the tourists.
We spent our last 2 nights here after driving The ring road. This place is absolutely amazing! A Viking inspired place with each unit is a separate turf house type cabin that is cozy, comfortable, very clean, surrounded by open fields, and so peaceful. Julian at the feints ask was so friendly and accommodating, Andre, Dowdy, and Jacob were perfect dinner hosts! They were so sweet and friendly and it was fun chatting with them each night. Although the price tag is a bit high, it’s totally worth it for such an amazing experience. Oh and another great thing is the basalt lines hot spring outside your unit was perfect after a day of hiking and sightseeing. Would definitely come back!
This property may be the most expensive in Iceland. A standard room is $800 per night. The Room. Here is what you will NOT get for that money. 1. Bathrobe 2. Tissue 3. Desk 4. Luggage rack... use the floor 5. Bathroom amenities than a shower cap The only place to place a laptop or tablet... a small table below knee level that is 1 foot wide and 2 feet long. I was offered a room with a table at the additional fee of $440 USD... per night. I declined the offer. Check-In. Be advised the hotel is encountered through a gate. There is a small sign that tells you to gain entry to call a phone number. Too bad if it is raining and you must go find this sign. Too bad the hotel does not advise guests in advance. The check-in person tried to tell me that my booking via Booking.com was paid directly to Booking.com while at the same time directly charging my credit card. Dinner. Every day is a "surprise". Translation... no choices. On my one dinner it was a soup... apparently always the starter, beef, and a dessert. In theory dinner starts at 8 PM but they do not want to start service until ALL guests arrive. Then... all courses are served locked-step. You must wait for your next course until everyone finishes a course, then a delay, then the next course. Cost... $105 USD. The food was no better or worse than what I had at many other properties during my 30 days in Iceland at the country's best properties. It was not worth the 30% greater cost at the next most expensive meal that I had in Iceland. Breakfast. No better than at almost any other property at which I stayed. In fact, while I could not confirm, breads and pastries were not made at the property. At least 30% of my other stays featured fresh, homemade bread. Summary. If you want less... not more... this is a dream property. Not recommended.…
Not only was this place everything we expected, but we both had come down with a good old Icelandic cold. We were totally miserable for 3 day. The staff went above and beyond to help us through it. They even catered a 3 course chefs special directly to our cottage, offered to bring lemon slices and ginger to ease our sore throats. The word “no” never crossed their lips. Still was true service!! We can’t thank you enough.
The warmth and hospitality here was excellent. We were impressed at the skill of the kitchen as well as the wine pairings and knowledge of the sommelier. The rooms have everything you need, and nothing more. The hot tubs were sublime. Our only suggestion would be to replace the false candles with real candles in the dining room and lounge. Other than that, this spot was beyond charming.
We spent three happy nights in a 2-Bed-Rooms-Hus at the Torfhus. The house offered two lovely bedrooms (not much storage place), a bathroom with shower (again not much storage place) and a well equipped kitchen…and a stunning private hot pot between basalt stones. The design is as beautiful as shown on the website and we highly enjoyed a rainy day inside reading on the couch. The unexpected highlight of our stay were the three dinners we had at the Torfhus restaurant (not open to public): the chef and the sommelier are true connaisseurs - the food was just excellent and the pairing wines were wonderful! We‘d return there solely for that culinary experience - which was served by a highly dedicated and enthusiastic service team. Thank you so much to everyone! The retreat is close to Gulfoss waterfall and the Geysir Strokkur (about 20 minutes drive) and about 15 minutes from the next supermarket (Fludir) and 15 minutes from Geysir Hestar, a horses farm that offers lovely riding tours.…
We stayed during a red weather warning, which was a pretty bracing experience but the Hotel could not have been better. Beautiful bijou cabins, great hot tubs, wonderful food in the cosy dining room and great hospitality. And Northern Lights - twice! This is a small, beautifully formed hotel in a striking location. Thoroughly recommended.
I cannot say enough good things about Torfhus Retreat. We recently stayed at the property for two nights at the beginning of our first trip to Iceland and we absolutely intend to visit again! The staff at Torfhus (Helgi, in particular!) was accommodating and helpful even weeks before we landed, quickly responding to my many emails to help us organize excursions during our stay and answer any questions we had about our upcoming trip. Upon landing, the hospitality continued. We were warmly welcomed the day of our arrival and brought to the cottage and showed its various features. It was a beautifully appointed cottage, very spacious, clean and welcoming. The meals at the main house were truly exceptional (and I'm a rather demanding NYC resident who does not throw around food praise lightly), made better by the warm and engaging interactions with the staff throughout our stay. On the second day of our stay, when horrible wind storms made it impossible to leave our cottage, Helgi delivered soup and bread to us for lunch so that we would not have to brave the hazardous conditions. If you are considering a stay outside of Reykjavik with easy access to the Golden Circle and the South Coast, I cannot recommend this property highly enough. We cannot wait to return ourselves!…
Torfhus is one of those places that feels so special you want to keep it secret–we've been twice in the past year! In September, and again over New Years. The cabins are spectacularly cozy, with a semi-private hot pool (shared between two adjoining cabins) perfect for warming up after a day exploring Iceland or catching the northern lights. The food is some of the best we had in Iceland. And Bjarni, the sommelier, is the highlight of the whole experience. I'm not typically a wine drinker, but Bjarni is so passionate about wine and the stories behind the makers that I couldn't help but get brought into their world. If anyone will make you love wine, it is Bjarni! One of those most special moments was when Bjarni rang a bell during dinner, announcing to the dining room that the northern lights were putting on a show, and we all rushed out together to the most spectacular view. If there's one hotel not to miss in Iceland, it's Torfhus! We can't wait to visit again.…
