We loved our stay at Matanivusi; it was exactly what we needed. My partner went surfing every day, while I went snorkelling, read, did yoga and made friends with the other surf widows. The staff were so friendly; Junior kept us on our toes with his wicked sense of humour, Captain Morgan found some brilliant waves for my partner, Melaki (not sure I've spelled correctly) gave a wonderful pregnancy massage and Tania, the yoga instructor, only arrived half way through our stay but was a beautiful addition to the Matanivusi community and led us through the most magical classes underneath the huge banyan tree. The food was consistently outstanding (although I wish they offered half portions - they're definitely cooked for people who have been surfing all day) and waking up to the sound of the ocean right outside our door was heavenly. I loved the commitment to sustainability, too, which I think attracts a smarter, more conscious and interesting, laid back type of guest (pretty important when there are only 12 rooms and you're eating together every night). If you're looking for 5 star luxury, this probably isn't your vibe (think worm toilets and BYO - ideally eco friendly - shampoo), but if you want genuinely passionate staff, awesome location, delicious hearty meals and activities on demand, Matanivusi is for you.

A week at Matanivusi is a week you won't forget. There are multiple surf spots all within an hour from the resort, so no matter the conditions you'll always have waves somewhere. The food is incredible, there are multiple dishes to choose from everyday for each meal. If you're lucky enough to catch a fish they'll make sashimi for you and serve it beautifully. The staff really create a 'family' vibe by setting a big table each night for all guests to sit at. This gives you the opportunity to mingle with other guests, which you'll end up being best buds with by the end of the week. If you're unlucky and get a super rainy day with no surf, there's still plenty to do. Yoga, snorkelling, kayaking, a hot tub, beachfront pool and local waterfall trips. The staff are so welcoming and genuine, we felt very well looked after. A unique, fun and adventurous experience I will never forget!

Matanivusi is a soulful, wholesome resort that offers a genuine Fijian experience. The accommodation is absolute beachfront, the staff know you by name from day one, and there is an abundance of activities to enjoy regardless of whether or not you surf - kayaks, SUPs, fishing, beach walks, yoga, cocktails on the subset deck, snorkelling, you name it. We returned from our trip to Matanivusi about a week ago, and still feel relaxed! If you are undecided on where to stay in Fiji - for a surf trip, a honeymoon, a family vacation, a solo adventure… this is your sign to book Matanivusi.

We went to Matanivusi for our honeymoon hoping for great food, some waves, and some yoga. It cost a bomb, like a lot. Maybe we're the only people paying full price or something because it was terrible value for money. Starting with the great bits... The location is suitably remote and right on the beach. The staff were so helpful, friendly, & kind always. The possibility for epic, uncrowded waves is definitely there too. The family style dining with the other guests means you'll make some great friends too. Alas, our 7 day stay wasn't so good. The food situation was mostly pretty dismal. A two day bout of food poisoning didn't help either. Given the rural location (but still on the mainland), some supply challenges are to be expected but the minimal supply of even tropical fruit was a surprise. Most meals were pretty average, though some were great. On the dud days, my pregnant wife was struggling with lack of snacking options (e.g. fruit) between meals. The resort itself is unique, tidy, and beautiful, but rough around the edges. It's got character & charm. It's got all the things to tick all the boxes, but very little is new or polished as you'd expect for the cost. The rooms are kept clean, but were pretty sparse & simple. On the yoga, which was a major drawcard for my wife while I surfed, there's a great looking studio with a unique setting. But there were no staff (as advertised) to take a practice. On surfing, I didn't score. Skunked in fact. We were there in July. The local breaks were fun & uncrowded but barely over 3ft at best and because of some boat problems at the start we were stuck catering to waves for the lowest surfing ability in the resort riding 2ft onshore on drying reef. The jewel is Frigates, but they're only going there every 3 days or so and in my case a badly timed case of food poisoning meant I never saw it. Apparently it's awesome. It's a full day mission though, so also not ideal if you've got a non-surfing wife back at the resort. Their lack of communication & timing on some of these things (e.g. a 3.5 hr session in 1ft Serua rights slop) just made it hard for me to accurately tell her when I'd be back which meant she's stuck twiddling her thumbs sometimes. Oh, and don't do the waterfall trip. They don't really tell you how much it'll cost, then boom, $200fjd on the bill. It was pretty average anyway. So yeah, with our 7 day costs getting close to AU$9k all-in with flights, it was pretty sh*t really. Go to Indo for a way better trip both in waves & comfort.

This was our third trip to Matanivusi & we’ve loved every trip. When you arrive at Matanivusi you are treated like part of the family, everyone is helpful, friendly & makes sure your trip is special checking in that all your individual needs are met. The surf this trip was great ranging from 2-6ft, with a couple of trips to Frigates, Serua Rights, Fiji Pipe & Shifties. Snorkelling trips were also regular. Each night an announcement was made after dinner updating the plan for the next day. They also helped us link with a River Tubing Day Trip which was a good opportunity to see a different part of Fiji. The food as always was amazing with a highlight being the Fiji Night where staff prepare a traditional Fijian dinner (you can also help). The Spa was a must after long surfs with a variety of massages & beauty treatments on offer. The deep tissue massage was excellent. Unfortunately they didn’t have a yoga instructor this trip but they have one starting next month. We hope to be back fro our forth trip!

We chose this resort as a destination for our 13 year old to pursue his surf passion whilst we recharged our batteries. We couldn't have found somewhere more special - mostly because of the genuine desire of each and every one of the team to leave no stone unturned in the effort to ensure that our trip met our expectations. The small and secluded nature of the resort makes it a very genuine experience. Attention to detail is commendable. The facilities are fantastic. Every other guest that we shared the time with was either a returning guest or was emphatic that they would be back. I felt that our son was always in safe hands, despite me through ignorance of surfing underestimating the level required on reef breaks. Our son had an absolute ball. He was mentored and pushed to his limits not wanting to miss one single boat heading out to the reef. The menu and execution of it was such a treat.

The location is stunning, the resort is beautiful and relaxing, the staff are super friendly and accommodating, the food is delicious, and the surfing/snorkelling is world-class. However, my review is 3-stars because there were a few things that didn't live up to expectations for the price you pay (we paid 1150FJD per night for 2 people, 1 surfer + 1 non-surfer). If the price was $200 less pp per night, then I'd give it a 5-star review. However, at the price we paid the main negative was the lack of organisation/professionalism. The way that it was supposed to work was: at dinner, the plan for the next day's activities would be shared, including when boats would leave for different surfing/snorkelling options. Although, this didn't happen every night, and even when it did the plan was rarely stuck to. It could be tempting to brush it off with a comment like, "you just need to go with the flow", however, the reality is it created unnecessary stress and anxiety, constantly needing to worry about whether you were up to date on the newest plan, otherwise you might miss out. To give an example: one night it was shared that the next morning there would be 3 boats leaving at 7, 8 and 9am. The 7am boat for advanced surfers, the 8am boat for snorkelers and the 9am boat for beginner/intermediate surfers. At a whim, the plan changed in the morning when there were apparently enough people hanging around at 8am who wanted to do beginner surfing, so the beginner surf trip left at 8am and the snorkelling boat was delayed to 9am. My partner, who wanted to go snorkelling then had to wait around for an hour with nothing to do, while two surfers who rocked up ready to go for the 9am beginner boat missed out on surfing and had to go snorkelling instead. Some days there wasn't ever a plan that was formally communicated, and every staff/guest you spoke to seemed to have a different idea of what the plan was, which meant you just needed to be there hanging around in case people left without you. On top of this, it really wasn't clear which staff member was supposed to be coordinating the activities, so you didn't even know who to go to to find out what was really happening. (I think part of the problem is the staff are trying to be too accommodating, so if some guests made requests/suggestions the staff wanted to accommodate them, however, failed to consider the downstream impacts on other guests) The solutions to the above problems don't even cost any money, but if implemented would greatly improve the experience: - Make a plan - Communicate the plan - Stick to the plan! - Accommodate extra requests, only if they don't impact the agreed plan - Identify which staff member is responsible for coordinating activities and communicate this to the guests - Have a sign-up board for the planned trips, so that if anything does need to change the staff know who to communicate any changes to Some other negatives of our trip: - We were offered a trip to a local waterfall, it sounded nice and we were keen. We asked multiple times if it would cost anything, we were told that we would just need to pay for the transfer and we would share that cost with 3 other guests, however when we checked out we were charged $90pp. It was nice, but it definitely wasn't worth that much, and that is much more than what a transfer should cost for how far away it was - There's no safe in the rooms, so you need to keep your valuables in the safe in the office. Not too big an an issue, until you want to get on your laptop and the manager isn't in the office - This one is quite nitpicky but still annoying considering the price we were paying. There was no Malibu at the bar for 3 days in a row, and most of the cocktails they offered needed Malibu. They definitely could've picked up some Malibu the next day after they ran out... although, later we found out that they asked some other guests to pick up a large amount of alcohol with them from duty-free - I paid extra as a surfer, which entitled you to trips to Frigates, however, there were no trips to Frigates for the 5 full days I was there - There was no yoga instructor. To be fair, this was advertised as not being guaranteed, however, the above pattern is making me question whether they ever attempt to hire a yoga instructor Don't get me wrong, we still had a really good time, and I echo all of the positives from other reviews. However, there's a lack of organisations and a pattern of the owners/managers being a bit cheap (while we paid a premium). In contrast, we also stayed at Coconut Beach Resort in Fiji which has a very similar set-up, however, was cheaper while suffering from none of the complaints above (quite the opposite!)

My husband and I spent 6 days at this beautiful Fijian resort. The location is stunning and our gorgeous Bure looked straight out onto the water. Everything was clean and super comfortable. The strong sustainability ethos of the resort was also impressive. My husband wanted to celebrate his 60th birthday with a surfing holiday and he was not disappointed! He managed 5 days of awesome surfing, including 3 trips to Frigates, while I enjoyed relaxing by the pool, snorkelling, a massage and plenty of beach walks. The resort is naturally beautiful, but what is truly outstanding about this place is the staff! From the drivers who transported us to and from the airport and to a local waterfall, to the cooks, wait staff, masseurs, surf and snorkelling guides, housekeeping staff and so many others- everyone was incredibly friendly, welcoming, caring and worked hard to make sure we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We were told that once we entered the doors of the resort, we were all family and that is exactly what it felt like. Our stay was topped off with a special celebration for my husband’s 60th including a Kava ceremony, traditional Lovo, music and delicious birthday cake. We would love to return to this beautiful place one day. Vinaka Vakalevu to all the staff!

I recently was fortunate to stay here with my wife and two young daughters (3 and 1). Wow what an experience! Beautiful location, fantastic activities, great food but what really blew us away was the wonderful hospitality of the Fijians who work there. To Seva, Do, Ledge, Seni, Morgan, Weis, Ma and all the crew, you are all legends of the highest order, such wonderful genuine people with huge hearts. My girls were looked after incredibly well, I could not have asked for more. They even took us out on the boat with a raft and board for them to float on and enjoy the beautiful ocean with us while we took it in turns to go snorkelling. Some places you travel to it feels like people are only nice to you because they want your money. Here it feels like they all genuinely want to be your friend. Just wonderful.

It’s a given that when you stay at Matanivusi you are going to get great waves, delicious food, and beautiful accommodation right on a remote, secluded beach. But what truly makes this place special is the staff. From the moment we checked in we were made to feel at home by every single staff member, from the surf guides to the kitchen and bar team, the housekeeping staff, the yoga instructor and everyone in between. I have never experienced personalised service like they give at Matanivusi. The staff organise a range of daily activities to cater for surfers, non-surfers and families. They have to also factor in tides, weather, and guest preferences, and every single one of them go above and beyond to make sure everybody is happy, well fed and entertained. It’s a mammoth effort and I cannot overstate how much we appreciated the hard work they all put in and how welcome they all made us feel. Matanivusi is such a special place and we feel very grateful to have stayed here - we will definitely be back!
