On the idyllic and less-visited north shore of Lake Atitlan, Santa Cruz is an indigenous Kaqchikel village with around two thousand local inhabitants. This quiet village has long been a favorite destination for those in the know who want to get away from it all, and La Iguana Perdida is proud to have been active in the community here since we opened the doors in 1996. We’ve been an “eco-hotel” since before the term became popular, converted to solar in the last few years, and we’ve always been active in the environmental movement on Atitlan. The choice of lodging at the Iguana runs the gamut, from the original wood construction consisting of spacious dormitories, private rooms with shared bath and a rustic cabana, to the more modern side of the hotel with luxury rooms with private bath, balcony and lake views. Shared bathroom facilities are scattered around the spacious property tucked behind the bouganvillas and banana trees. Our restaurant serves delicious breakfasts and lunches from 8am until 3pm daily and family-style feasts every night at 7pm often followed by activities like open-mic and trivia. All meals are prepared by the lovely local Mayan staff, and vegetarian, gluten free and other dietary restrictions are always available upon request. The climate (warm in the sun and cool in the shade) is perfect for whatever level of activity you’re seeking, even if it’s lounging in a hammock with a good book all day. Located right on the waterfront, La Iguana Perdida is one of the best places to enjoy the beauty and serenity that Lake Atitlan has to offer. Start the day with a yoga class on the patio overlooking the lake with the volcanos framed in the distance then go for a kayak or follow shaded trails and paths along the shoreline for a dip in the magical waters of Atitlan. After a day of hiking or kayaking, fire up our traditional Mayan sauna or treat yourself to a massage with one of our experienced practitioners. There’s no reason to be bored even on a rainy day with our pool table, dartboard, book exchange and TV room at your disposal, and if you’d like to immerse yourself more in the local community we can organise backstrap weaving classes in a local home or one-on-one Spanish classes. We even have wifi now! If water sports is your bag, we are home to ATI Divers, the only scuba operation on Lake Atitlan since 1996. Enjoy a fun dive or take the four-day PADI Open Water Course and become a certified diver. Atitlan is a collapsed volcanic caldera with massive volcanic rock formations, fish, crabs and even volcanic hot-spots you can plunge your hands into. One of the few spots in the world where you can get the high-altitude specialty certification without freezing! We’re open to travellers of all ages, and with over twenty years in business we hope we can find a way to make your visit to Lake Atilan a memorable one.

We heard about this place from others and decided to try it out. Pretty much immediately after arriving we extended our stay. It's so pretty there! We had a lovely room with balcony and the premises is gorgeous. Every night at 7 they have a family style dinner where everyone sits at a big table and you get three courses. The food is amazing, always a good vegetarian option. There's also a dive school right there, we went diving with them. Recommend this place to everyone! The only thing I didn't like: the wifi was a bit flaky at times. Annoying when you have to book new accommodations. Finally it would have been even better if there was a kitchen where you could make breakfast or lunch if you'd want to (but I understand why they don't do that, it would hurts the restaurant)

This hostel is at Santa Cruz la Laguna and in a nice spot. They do food which you have to reserve ahead of time. No WiFi so you are able to socialize better with people and make friends. I enjoyed my stay overall. Was quite short but I would definitely come here again. Only thing I didn’t like but is no big deal is the bathroom seems to not give adequate hot water. Staff are nice people as well.

Didn't stay here, but this place seemed to have one of the cheapest dinner options in Santa Cruz. You have to make a reservation ahead of time so they know how much to cook. They have a happy hour and dinner is at 7. Dinner was fine, lots of food, but nothing special. It is right next to the boat dock. Staff was very friendly and they have nice views.

Santa Cruz is the clear winner of this backpacking trip for me! Not only did I have my best meals at CECAP, but Iguana Perdida was my favorite hostel. The staff - largely made up of volunteers - are all so delightful. SC has a tight-knit community of foreigners, and this manifests itself in good staff morale, which results in excellent customer service! The grounds are beautiful (oh my god, that lake and mountain view...), it's literally right on the dock, and the common areas are large and replete with comfy chairs and hammocks. The food is outstanding! There's no communal kitchen, but as a private double is cheaper per person than most dorm beds in Central America, buying three meals a day is affordable! Family-style dinners are a good value and encourage guests to meet each other; if you're not into the day's menu, all of the hotels along the lake do a nightly pre-fixe dinner. They have yoga mats, a pool table, a TV, and lots of games and books. Bathrooms are large and there's warm water (I once got hot water, but only with very little water pressure). They accept credit cards! Iguana Perdida is home to Ati Divers, which is an excellent dive shop in a unique environment! Speaking of environment - IP cares a LOT about reducing rubbish, and this is seen clearly in the way that everything that can be recycled is. I felt so relaxed and so at home here; if I could come back to one guesthouse in Central America, this would be it.
