Truly my secret hideaway .... Paradise .... the crickets chant at the top of their little lungs. The monkeys make you aware who is boss. The array of butterflies, birds and other wild life. The cabins are basic, the food is outstanding and Werner and Mari are the best hosts. Also lovely Beto who takes your luggage from the boat, way way up to your cabin. The beach and beaches are endless. The trails through the rainforest are full of surprises. From all the steps I climbed I think I grew a new set of lunges and boy did my thighs trim down.
My wife, mother-in-law and I really enjoyed our stay here. The hosts, Werner and Mari, were very welcoming, friendly, and accommodating throughout our visit. They provided GREAT food at both breakfast and dinner, and lots of it. Werner also helped us by arranging transportation for onward travel. The rooms are essentially large, rustic cabins with a full bath. A fan was provided to cool things down, but by late evening it was not necessary. Shower has only cold water, but it was welcome relief after long hot days of hiking and other activities. One thing we could have used were hooks and/or a clothesline outside for hanging wet clothes out to dry. From our porch we saw monkeys, macaws, and more. The grounds are very nice and contain lots of little creatures such as frogs and lizards. The location is great in my opinion; it's far enough into the jungle that you feel somewhat isolated from other lodges, but in reality you could easily walk to nearby lodges and into town if you want. It is also very close to the Drake Bay Trail, which leads to numerous beautiful beaches and lots of jungle to explore. However, this lodge (and others in the area) is only accessible by boat, or by foot from town (Drake Bay). Check with Werner to ask more about getting there. A couple warnings: like many places in Drake Bay/Corcovado, Cabinas Vista al Mar sits above the Drake Bay Trail. After arriving by boat and accessing the nearby trail, you have to climb a set of stairs from the trail to reach the lodge. The cabins are accessed by another, shorter set of steps above the main lodge/dining area. If you have disabilities or otherwise believe you would have difficulty with this, you may want to consider something in town. Also, if you are looking for a hotel experience, this place is not for you. Most people come here for the jungle and getting this close to it for a reasonable price means you will forgo things such as fine furnishings, daily maid service, air conditioning, and televisions. If you are OK with that, and your focus is on experiencing the jungle and all that comes with it, then you should do fine staying here. I highly recommend Cabinas Vista al Mar!!…
Stayed for a week in March 2019. Cabins are at the top of the hill and overlook the jungle an provide good views of the sea. Magnificent property. Clean and well kept. Has one of the best beaches we saw on the north peninsula. Close to town and nature parks. We chose this place a as a base for our daily hikes along the coastal trail which worked out great. Saw many monkeys and birds on the property each day. In fact, we saw just as much wildlife from our cabin as we did during our hikes. The view from the cabin are amazing. You look over the jungle and sea. Werner and Mari were excellent hosts and tended to all our needs. They knew the area well and helped us coordinate boats and taxis to make or visit hassle free. We will visit again for sure.
This location is great for people who want to enjoy and learn Pura Vida. It is a bit to walk uphill but afterwards you will have a great look to the ocean. The beach is just used by guests, hence not crowded. We could observe Tucans, monkeys and hummingbirds. Werner and Mari are great owners. We talked a lot, got information about the country and the costarican lifestyle. They are preparing great and tasty meals and Mari is decorating the walls with great paintings. We had a relaxing time and would not hesitate to come back. Really to recommend!
This was my first time traveling alone and I wanted to go somewhere beautiful and relaxing! Somewhere that could take my troubles away and make me feel at peace! Bahia Drake is a beautiful island surrounded by beautiful plants and high top trees, along with the sound of the monkeys in the distance, or the tucán singing in the morning as well as the waves crashing upon shore! If you love nature, And don’t mind being in a top notch hotel and want to feel like a welcomed family member then this is the perfect place to be! Marie and Werner are the nicest host to be around. They make breakfast, lunch and dinner for you and make sure you are always comfortable! They have great views of the ocean and the forest! I definitely need to go back soon!
