My wife and I used to come here to this Inn to have the best hamburger we had ever had (she needed it well done and somehow they pulled off the tastiest burger). I came here today. She is gone now and I thought I’d relieve a memory. You can buy a beer, or a White Claw in the store and bring it on the patio to drink. Some local guy was playing the guitar (the others on the patio said he comes here all the time) and I actually had one of the most magical times I’ve had in quite a long time. Cloudy, cool, and something cooking in the restaurant (new chef they said today will be making burgers by this weekend — former chef from Troon golf course in Phoenix — what a catch). I Will be back this weekend.
The Butterfly Garden Inn was a fantastic place to stay. We had never stayed here before and found it using online search tools. So we really had no clue what we were getting into. As you can imagine staying in a cabin that was built many years ago, we were not expecting Trump Towers. Well, ok we didn’t get Trump towers either, but what we did get was a very nice and CLEAN cabin. It did not smell dusty or anything like you might expect an old cabin to be. There is nice kitchen, cooking and eating sets as well as a clean bathroom! We stayed in the Rosita Patch cabin #5 with a King sized bed and a Queen. There was plenty of room for the family of 4. We are local to Arizona and love to go up to Sedona, so I would think we would surely stay here again!
My daughter and I stayed in Cabin 14, situated furthest back along the woods for a peaceful stay. On our third/final night around 10 pm we both heard a person's footsteps walking slowly on the gravel behind our cabin right outside my bedroom window (definite heel/toe movement). We also heard soft banging noises against the outside wall of the cabin as if someone was trying to pry something along the cabin wall. This continued for several minutes. I called 911 and was told the closest police was in Flagstaff and it would take a while (actually 40-45 minutes). In the meantime I called the after hours cabin # and spoke to Frank. He was very surprised that we heard a person rather than an animal, but did have an employee who lived on the property come to the cabin. Both police and the employee arrived at the same time. As I opened the door for police/employee, I noticed the light bulb on the porch was unscrewed, I recall it being lit the previous nights. The employee said it was probably a previous guest who unscrewed it. As the policeman checked out the back of cabin, I could hear his footsteps from inside which sounded like the same noise we heard earlier. In the meantime, I checked locks on all of the windows. The bedroom window lock was broken next to my bed where we heard footsteps. We were told by the police who also told Frank it was likely deer as the police saw deer tracks. I was appauled that we weren't taken more seriously. I asked Frank for a partial refund for the night as we decided to pack up and leave since we didn't feel safe (about 11 pm). He told me it was the middle of the night already and offered nothing. We left in disbelief at how this was handled. I receieved a call the next day from Jen, very nice but also seemed more convinced we heard deer. She offered to refund us $50 at first then deducted $85 from our $200 night stay. It was extremely frustrating that I had to first ask for a refund, then receive such a small amount for what we went through and on top of it be doubted by what we heard. We are very lucky to be safe but what if this happens again and someone gets hurt or worse? I hope this is a lesson for all involved to take this kind of experience more seriously next time...PLEASE!…
Butterfly Garden is a quaint, cozy bunch of cabins that we loved. If you are good with unplugging for a couple days and enjoying nature and quiet then go here. Cabins are small, intimate, very clean but not fancy. Owners do a wonderful job making you feel at home (nice kitchen with everything you need including Keurig), a gas fireplace and comfy beds. Front porch, chairs/benches, hammocks give you a chance to relax and listen to nature. Unbelievable stargazing and since this is the northernmost resort it is 7-10 degrees cooler than Sedona.
Quiet song birds. The sound of rain putting you to sleep. The smell of trees. Sights of wildlife. Hammocks to nap in. Chairs to read a book in. No tv, yes please! All the amenities. No a/c in the cabins, but a lovely common area to do puzzles, watch tv or cool off. Creek across the road was a gem, forget about slide rock with a deal like that. Breakfast burritos each morning. Truly we only left one time in our 3 day stay for a meal. Then back to soak it in. Thanks so much! We got a smart-shopper deal so the price was right.
