Detailed Reviews
We stay for three nights every October with our friends and their young kids. We (husband and I) stay in the Overlook and they stay in the Oak House. The cabins everything you need to make meals with the appropriate utensils, pans, a stove, microwave, coffee maker, fridge, grill. We kept the windows open all night as you can hear Oak Creek (which is below you), so peaceful. The owner/everyone who works there is so amazing, you can tell they take pride in their resort and are always willing to answer the 100s of questions we have! (What tree is this? Where does that path go? Etc). We can’t wait to go back!

I'm reluctant to give a review because I want to keep this as my own secret place. It is that wonderful! Granted, this place may not be for everyone. There is no internet or television and your cell phone will not likely work here. But if the idea of relaxing in a rustic but comfortable beautiful setting disconnected from the web and pull of modern life appeals to you, then get ready to enjoy the time of your life! My wife and I spent our honeymoon here ten years ago. We went back for our 5th anniversary and now we have just returned from our 10th anniversary trip. We would go more often, but we live over a thousand miles away. We stayed for four days this time and only left the resort one time for a drive up to Flagstaff. This resort has been owned and operated by the same family for over 70 years. They are immensely friendly, kind, and helpful! I can't say enough about them or this beautiful property. Go and enjoy, but let's keep it our secret!

My favorite place on earth! As soon as you enter the resort, it's like a peaceful Oasis away from the busyness of Sedona. Great location in Oak Creek Canyon- you are close to both the town of Sedona as well as Flagstaff. Each cabin is cozy, unique and beautiful! The family who owns the resort is so kind and welcoming. Highly highly recommend Forest Houses Resort!

We’ve been coming here for many years, a gem of upper oak creek with stone and wooden cabins along the creek and near AB Young trail. Dog friendly and family owned and operated! View house, Rock House, Trout House are favorites but any house available is the way to go!

We stayed in the 'Treehouse' cabin. Was very nice not as secluded as we like but plenty of room; kitchen was great to cook dinner in, with decks both front and back of cabin. Front desk was helpful in answering questions. Cabin was older but clean! Sedona is breathtaking and we would gladly stay here again!

We stayed at the Oak House in Oct 2021. It’s haunted. But I believe that all properties in the forest in Sedona are haunted. I’m not down with paranormal stuff so experiencing that once in my lifetime is enough. Spooky though.
I loved the morning walks. Taking a stroll in the crisp August morning and pulling an apple from the tree. Best apple I ever had.

This is the most comfortable place my wife and I have ever stayed, world-wide! We were in "Rock House", the original building. This is laid out on 4 levels, which helps keep it from feeling claustrophobic. Road noise, except for the occasional truck is drowned out by the stream (at least in April...), making for a very peaceful stay. The kitchen was exceptionally well-equipped (except for soup/cereal bowls, and a very dull knife :-). Don't bother with bottled water, the stuff out of the tap is superb. The property description says 'Rock House has the world's smallest bathtub', which is actually a relatively deep shower enclosure (my wife was very relieved:-)
My guess is that reservations are very hard to get (we got a last-minute cancellation). So please don't try to reserve when we're trying to get in...

Its a beautiful area, Sedona and Oak Creek are just fabulous in the fall. The houses are a little run down but the view more than makes up for that. Still, you can get this same view at dozens of locations in the area and not have to deal with Bob.
Bob inherited the place from his parents and is running it into the ground. The homes are no longer being maintained as they once were and he is so obsessed with keeping the rules that he doesn't mind breaking a few laws. It is his habit to walk around looking in windows and counting heads to make sure that no one has what he perceives might be an unregistered guest. I can see from many other reviews below that we are not the only people to notice this habit of Bobs. I haven't looked up Sedonas rules but I fairly certain peeping Toms are discouraged. After we noticed this we started looking around for hidden video cameras in the rooms and bathrooms. It is creepy. I would recommend staying there for Halloween and skipping the haunted houses. Why go there when you can have your very own Bob?
Definitely stay here if you don't mind the peeping Tom problem. I suggest you keep everyone fully clothed and cover your windows. He will also be going through your trash can. It just isn't worth it.
There are plenty of other resorts in the area, many of which are not as close to the road and have less road noise. I'd mention some of these but I do not want to look like someone who is promoting a business. This is just an honest review of what we experienced.
You should also know that this is bare bones. No telephone, no maid service, no televisions, no internet. Again, you can find much nicer accomodations else where and skip the resident lunatic.

We have been customers/friends of the Forest Houses Resort for over three years. My family and I have stayed in the Rock House, Creek House, Diamond House, and many other homes on the property at a minimum of three times a year. When we stay at the Forest Houses Resort we also reserve 2 - 3 houses, and come up with dear friends or family every visit. We used to at one point just loved the Forest Houses Resort. My husband and I had made a promise to come here every year and make a family tradition and create many wonderful memories with our 9 year old and now brand new baby. The Forest Houses Resort was once a place that encouraged the same family believes and traditions to all their guests. For example, to encourage this same belief and standing, any reservation you have with the Forest Houses Resort you are guaranteed the same weekend in the years to follow. It is a great way to plan ahead and make wonderful memories.
Now in January 2009, on our yearly planned trip to celebrate and wrap up a wonderful holiday season and play in the snow we stayed here in the Forest Houses Resort with a reservation of three homes. We were sharing our reservations with some dear friends for their 1st time, however the 3rd home would be vacant so my husband called December 2 to cancel the 3rd home and confirm our other two homes. It has always been a policy to cancel your reservation 31 days in advance. We done so. To forfill this obligation in canceling reservations, you must call the Forest Houses Resort, however everytime you do call you will always reach only the answering machine. We left a detailed message and because of our history and relationship with the Forest Houses Resort this service had never before have been an issue.
When we checked in the owner charged us for the third room, my husband defended his actions and indicated he had done his due diligence to cancel the 3rd reservation correctly. The owner was disappointed in the result of the 3rd cancelation, my husband offered to split the cost of the 3rd reservation because my husband was confident he had done what he was supposed to do in the Forest Houses Cancelation policy and to share responsibility and uphold our existing relationship with the Forest Houses Resort. However the owner told my husand to "forget it, and enjoy our weekend."
Upon checkout several days later, the owner told my husband he was cancelling all our future reservations (which we had 5 for 2009) and he was no longer welcome back to the resort. In shock, my husband apologized for any inconvenience and mistunderstanding and offered to pay for the 3rd reservation in full. The owner stated "it was too late and should have offered that when we checked in." During this conversation I was in the car, my husband joins me back in the car and gives me the disheartening news of our revoked inviation to return. I went into the office to personally speak with the owner and asked for solitued and what could I do to make this situation correct. I pleaded with the owner of how we loved this placed and prided ourselves this was a place we were going to continue to visit for many years with our 9 year old and now brand new baby whom is 10 months old, and many friends and family. The owner said there was nothing to do "and that my daughters and I can come and stay but without my husband" and then he conitnued to repeat inapporpriate things of my husband. I stayed quiet and in shock, all I could think of was what about our children how much they love this place and we promised we would always return. In thinking this, I refused to allow myself to stoop to the owner behavior because I did at one point cherish our realtionship with the Forest Houses Resort. I wished the owner a Happy New Year, and because he was crued, insulting, hateful, and inappropriate, and I left the office immediately to relieve myself of any further insults from this owner that we once used to call a friend and family. In a time in life when you can be a part of an organization and be called a friend instead of a customer or a number, we believed we had that solited with the Forest Houses Resort. We are extremly disappointed that a business owner could be so cruel to a family even after we had tried to make every attempt to rectify any misunderstanding or miscoomunications. We are dissappointed that a place we were so excited and proud to conitnue to visit year after year, and we had brought our business and as well as business of so many friends and family (because we advocated on behalf of Forest Houses Resort for so many years) has ended so rudely, cruelly, and full of malice. We have since then mailed a letter to the owner as well as proof that we called December 2, (by via detailed phone bill) to the owner. To date we have not heard anything from this once established, distinguised, family orientated resort. If you plan to visit the Forest Houses Resort, we recommend that you visit only once to keep the beauty, solitude and grace of the resort and Oak Creek Canyon preserved in your memory bank, and not that of a rude owner or establishment.

We were very excited to book a stay in the "view House" for my husbands birthday. Great reviews, travel magazine write-ups, secluded...just what we wanted! A week prior to our arrival, I ran across a review that mentioned no A/C....it's Arizona- there must be a mistake! So, I called- and was assured that A/C was "never needed", as the area is significantly cooler than in town. Unable to cancel since it was within the 30 day period, we took our chances.
Upon arrival, the owner Bob was working on the toilet in the bathroom- ok no problem, he was very nice about it. Once done, about 330pm, we "moved in"...in about 87 degrees inside the house! The upstairs bedroom, though the bigger of the two, was up a steep, narrow, wooden staircase that scared me. Plus, no window coverings, and heat rises. So, we decided to try to sleep in the downstairs tiny bedroom. The bed was old and uncomfortable, so we drove 30 minutes to Flagstaff for a $130 mattress topper. Came back- tried to bbq outside, but couldn't eat out there due to a ton of bugs. Ok- it's nature. We moved it inside and couldn't bear to eat there either- as a sudden swarm of insects had made their way inside. Black bugs died in our wine- and I don't want to know how many landed on our food. Mosquitoes soon took up house inside, as did the moths. Turns out, the screens are so old and bent that it was a piece of cake for them to slip through. the house backs up into a hill, which is filthy with leaves and dirt- couldn't open the kitchen window due to that and bugs just waiting to get in. A ton flew into the bathroom- so we had to close that window. Unable to cool the house down past 80 with the 2 fans, at 10pm- we were done. Can't sleep in that heat, shutting any windows or doors made it worse, and we weren't going to be eaten alive. My husband drove into town to call for a different hotel while I raced around repacking, sweating, very upset and swatting at the mosquitoes. We were out by 11pm.
I left a letter with the key and 2 messages for the owner to call us to discuss the problem and a refund- no way am I paying $120/night for a 7.5hr stay. It's been 5 days with no call back, and I am now disputing charges and writing reviews telling the truth.
It's too bad- the houses really have potential, they are nice- but no A/C in AZ is ridiculous, I don't care how shaded you are by trees. We spent 4 days there and the heat climbed to 110F.

Contact Forest Houses. I'm only a traveller who stayed there.
You would have to call and ask them. I don't fish so never asked.
The best way to get that answer is to call them directly.
