The Boulders Resort & Spa Scottsdale garners appreciation for its inviting atmosphere and well-maintained grounds, with the spa, pools, and golf courses frequently praised. However, some visitors have expressed concerns about the resort's value, citing high costs for amenities and services that don't always meet expectations. While the location is generally well-regarded for leisure trips, guests have encountered issues with room cleanliness, maintenance, and slow service, which has tarnished some experiences at the resort.

The Boulders sits way north of Scottsdale in Carefree. Nestled in the desert, we loved the wildlife and serenity of the desert. No traffic noise to be heard. Service was exemplary; staff was genuinely friendly and helpful. Their eager-to-please attitudes were contagious. We enjoyed a variety of food options - all fresh, artfully crafted and 'non-hotel'. Lots of walking and hiking trails and more wildlife than expected! Six days there and each day had new adventures. We particularly appreciated the option of an adult only pool and a family pool. The beds in the casitas were the most comfortable beds ever. The walk-out patio (covered) was used every evening as we watched the sunset in the desert.

What a great property! The grounds were just beautiful as were the Casitas (the rooms). They are spread out over a large area and are connected via paths. You can walk or you can call the front desk and have a golf cart come to your casita (most are 2 stories...and be sure to get the upper floor) and take you anywhere on the property within minutes. The pool area is gorgeous with a waterfall coming off a huge boulder and and pool seemingly dropped in between boulders. We did not eat on site as some of the restaurants were closed and we didn't love the look of the menus of the 2 open ones. Pool water was comfortable. We used the one by the lodge that had service until 5p. There is another pool by the golf course that had no service and was smaller. Covid-19 protocol was everywhere and we never were aware housekeeping or anyone else entered our room during our 4 night stay. We were fine to make our own bed and re-use linens. When we needed some extra soap and a couple more washcloths, they tied them in a plastic bag and placed them outside our door. If you're a nitpicker, you could see some age here and there, but considering the size of the resort it's amazing to me how well they keep it up to start with. We went in October and got a good deal of 269.00/nt. They do charge a resort fee of 35.00 per night as well (I'll save my soap box commentary on that for another forumn). Expect prices twice that high in high season. Would stay hear again in a heartbeat!!

When we arrived the team at Boulders were very kind and friendly. Check in went well. When she started telling us about the resort and all it was a bit disappointing to hear that one of the restaurants was closed then was told we should also TRY to make reservations at one of the two restaurants that were open because the resort was sold out and it could be difficult to secure ( it was and nothing was available hmmm why would they have the 3rd restaurant closed?) We did have lunch at the Grille on the golf course it was really just ok nothing that made us want to go try dinner or go back. Also room service only Friday and Saturday and limited. Again staying at high end Resort you'd expect more. Now the Pool situation again you're at a resort in AZ and the pools were relatively small not enough chairs for guests the lodge pool which was a pool all could go to meaning families. Again really small for the size of the resort. The spa pool was very tranquil Adult only but again size of resort small not enough chairs for guests. I guess what I'm saying is you'd best get there early and put your towels on some chairs or you will be disappointed. We only made it to the two pools because we wanted to be able to have some food and drinks the other pool was no food or drink service. The room itself was fantastic the ground were very well maintained and the team was spot on and handle the issues the best they could with the hand they were dealt by Mgmt.

We absolutely LOVED our stay at The Boulders! We were visiting from Seattle the week mask requirements went into effect and the surge in coronavirus cases in AZ made big news. I was a little nervous about traveling.
The day before our trip Hilton emailed me about the restrictions at the hotel and the extra precautions being taken. If you download the Hilton app you are allowed to choose our own casita and use the digital key feature.
The day we arrived, our digital key was activated and we didn't even have to check in at the front desk. Parked the car ourselves. There were employee-driven golf carts buzzing around the parking area offering to give us a ride and take our luggage to our casita. We decided to walk to our casita and handle our own luggage.
We stayed in South Casita 359 on the 7th hole of the South Course close to Rosie's Rock. Our casita was a very short walk from the parking lot and the main lodge pool.
While there was no housekeeping during our stay, I did call the front desk to ask for more toiletries be delivered to our room and that was no problem.
We had dinner reservations one night at The Spotted Donkey. Masks were required until we were seated at our table. The occupancy was limited and tables were spaced comfortably apart. Our server wore a mask. Dinner was great!
We bought food at the store to keep in our room and we ate offsite at restaurants in Carefree the remainder of our stay.
We enjoyed afternoons at the pool at the main lodge. Pool chairs were spaced out. Drinks and food were available and the pool server wore a mask. The pool was open 24 hours, we also did some night swimming and the pool towels were always stocked even late at night!
My husband and son enjoyed golfing and were happy with the service and precautions taken at the clubhouse.
The paved nature trail throughout the property was perfect for a morning walk. Loved seeing all the wildlife and listening to the birds. There's also a trail that climbs up behind the main lodge and above the pool and explores the boulders making a great spot to watch sunset.
Honestly we didn't want to leave The Boulders! We had a wonderful relaxing time there and appreciated the remoteness and the seclusion.
We will definitely come back for another visit to The Boulders.

Any issues attended to very promptly
Best part is while the staff was friendly and encouraging. They were never in your face constantly which I hate about High end resorts

We stayed here for the golf offering and were able to play on both courses (only 9 holes on the South course) and they are beautifully maintained. The resort has a nice paved nature trail and a hike up among the featured boulders which offer exploration of the local Sonoran desert environment. Each casita or villa has a nice patio that give a window on the local wildlife and offer a relaxing start or end to the day. The pools, spa and fitness center are well staffed and used by guests and members. Book spa treatments early as they were fully committed for the time of our stay. Restaurants on property have a nice variety; however, there are several restaurants and grocery stores nearby should you need or want something different than their options. The resort fee includes transportation via golf carts or vans throughout the property at any time including the self-parking lot; however, most areas of the property are within walking distance.

Returned here for our third visit since 2015. Property is gorgeous and immaculately kept, rooms are clean and spacious as always. Was sad to discover on my own, that the main components of the woman's spa was broken during my 5 day 4 night stay. The spa is amazing and one of our top drivers for going, wish I knew this at check-in time. Along with the lack of notification, it seemed to me that the staff was not as knowledgeable about things as had they have been in the past. Maybe a training issue? Lots of emails were being checked in front of us without status updates to share....spa status, random drink service charges, tub repair in our room...nobody seemed to know the answers. Someone from the hotel kept coming by our room thinking we were checking out? Strange.

The breakfast for Diamond people has changed. Instead of the $15 credit towards any of the GREAT breakfast items, a standard and boring honors menu was provided. Muffin, banana bread, bagel, plus fruits and coffee/tea. BORRRRING. Boulders, you can do better than this, please bring back the food credit or provide some uniqueness to the honors menu!! Not only that, but the staff didn't seem to know what was included in the honors breakfast and we kept getting charged for coffee. It's a pain to have to regurgitate this every day.

The big draw for us is the beautiful landscape here and this is what draws us back. This time there were some hairs to split, normally not an issue but there were multiple hairs here. I explained all of my concerns about this silly stuff to the hotel but they seemed a little casual about it all "sorry too bad" was the message we received. Will be watching future reviews about these things, curious if anyone else agrees or if there are further changes or improvements to help shape whether or not we will be back December 2020.

Originally I wrote this under the Boulders Spa listing but this listing is more to the point.
This was our first time at this property of the Hilton Chain. Staff was excellent and attentive. Check in was quick and friendly. We arrived around 5:30PM (Check in 4 or later)
Staff brought us to our “Casita” via special golf carts with luggage compartments in back. There is a $35 resort fee per day which is to cover amenities and gratuities. I did give an extra $5 to the driver as he was extra nice and besides carrying our heavy suitcase up a flight of stairs and into the unit, showed us around and explained everything in the room and including the self locking balcony slider doors. (Later we accidentally locked ourselves out on the balcony and were able to text the main desk to have someone rescue us).
The room we had was extra large as it was an upgraded casita from the standard ones. ( I recommend you reserve using the Hilton App as there are much better choices for rooms and when you are a member you can choose upgrades for extra $$ and sometimes get lots of perks for no extra $)
App prices are the same or lower than major booking sites.
We had the experience of eating dinner at
“THE GRILL” restaurant which requires the shuttle to bring you there (Plenty of shuttles are available all day)
Apparently they were short handed at dinner and service a bit slow and not up to Hilton standards that evening. The next 2 mornings we again ate at “The Grill” for breakfast and were treated to excellent service and great food at typical hotel restaurant prices ( All a la carte) There are more than 1 pool and the main pool behind the lodge was well serviced with towels etc (handicapped swing is available) there also is an attendant making continuous rounds for drinks / food that can be added to your room tab. Unfortunately we only had 2 days visit and the place has 2 golf courses (one for members only) but we did get to experience 2 great sunrises and see plenty of local wildlife early in the morning (rabbits, Quayles, etc)

Husband is Hilton’s highest level of status, diamond. While we never expect special treatment when we travel based on status, we are brand loyal and in exchange for that we do expect to not be lied to. We checked in to the boulders and realized we were in a room over looking the parking lot. I don’t think you could have found a worse view on the property if you tried. We called the front desk and asked about a room change after we were told at check in there were no rooms to upgrade to (perk of diamond), they said no but if something opened up they would call us immediately. There were rooms open, unless Hilton advertises multiple rooms on their website for “sale” when they do not actually exist. It’s frustrating when you tell someone you know they’re lying to you, you offer proof, and they continue to lie.

Other than that, it’s a typical resort. Somewhat isolated and everything there is overpriced. However, while overpriced everything was delicious. Hilton has stopped offering its breakfast to status members and instead “graciously” offers $12/person per room per day. Laughs. That will buy you a cup of coffee OR a small bread item for breakfast but not both. How is that a substitution for breakfast?! The rooms, at least the one we stayed in, are poorly insulated and we could hear everything from the room above us. There are no real doors on the bathroom, just sliding slatted doors, which was gross. I love my husband and all, but there are some things I want a solid door between us for. The shower had two temperatures, luke warm and scalding hot. There was no inbetween. Maid service is on demand but only with 24 hours heads up. No room service. There were dirty foot prints on our walls (not from us!), too.

The staff, while they did try to be helpful, was generally unaware of the area surrounding the hotel. Kind of disappointing when we were assured there would be recommendations for hikes we could do on our vacation prior to our arrival. There also are very limited vegetarian options, if you are vegetarian.

The location of the resort is perfect and the surroundings are beautiful. We have stayed here previously prior to covid and always felt it was worth the price. We were very disappointed on this recent visit in early May. Management changed their lotions and towels to a lessor quality, coffee was low grade, rooms seemed tired in general, could smell sewerage once in awhile. Food options poolside at the lower pool were pre-packaged and very expensive w no pool service provided, the upper pool had service and better options although the waitress appeared harried and scowling at times. The quality of the charcuterie inside at the bar right off the upper pool was shameful. We got it to go for $28 not inc tip and it was something you would pick up at a low end grocery store, very basic pepperoni, cheeses and a few pieces of apricot and nuts sprinkled on it and they packaged the grapes and olives together so the grapes were inedible from olive juice and the olives were something out of a can. The spa was actually closed on 2 of our days there which limited use to only the gym and yoga room and the mens steam room (or sauna) was under repair for the entirity of the stay.
Service was hit or miss, the majority of staff were helpful and accommodating, while a few were openly dismissive i.e. my husband told a staff person the coffee carafe was empty and she said " I'm sure someone knows" another gentleman when he realized we were only at the restaurant for happy hour went from being gracious to flippant in a matter of seconds. On the flip side I locked myself out of the room and a staff member was very helpful in getting me right in and another time a staff happily stopped for me to take me to another location on the property and was chatty and friendly on the ride. Anyway all this to say it was a big departure from our past visits as far as overall quality. When paying close to $500. per night, the price tag comes w a certain expectation which was definitely not met. That said, we would stay here again if offered a more moderate rate and adjust expectations accordingly.

What are differences between Sonoran and Boulders King Bed Casitas? Thanks.
Answer from Milos M

I believe the Sonaran casitas are either free standing or on the second floor. I think the boulder casitas are on the first floor. We had a Sonoran casita and loved it ! The building we stayed in was a quad with 2 upstairs and 2 downstairs casitas. I was very glad we were upstairs great views #269 way at the end it felt like a private get away! They have golf carts who transport people around as well.
