I wanted to spend a night in the Chiricahua Mountains and watch the stars under Arizona's darkest skies. I chose the Portal Peak Lodge and was looking forward to sitting outside listening to live music and gazing at the night sky. Unfortunately, this place is run more like a campground than a hotel. The staff is friendly and kindly but... More

I stayed here three nights in July. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the room was spacious and an excellent hummingbird feeder was just outside. A bit expensive for the rather basic rooms, but the location is worth the price. The restaurant has a bit a limited choice (you start repeating after the third day), but the food was... More

We went to Portal to hike in the Chiricahua Mountains and maybe see some birds. The tiny town of Portal with its general store and an outside eating area and performance stage is the heart of the the town. Gentle country western music was performed by local artists each night. The birds provided a symphony in the morning. The hiking... More

The Portal Peak Lodge offers very basic accommodations - clean beds, a shower-bath combination, a separate counter-sink area, and a refrigerator. This is NOT a luxury hotel. I consider it an acceptable place to stay while in the area for birding, etc. A small restaurant and store are on the premises. As of May 2016, they do not offer a... More

Portal Peak Lodge stay was for two nights in April 2016. The room was economical and clean. I rate the comfort of the beds a "7" at best, so if you can bring a FEATHER DOWN comforter to sleep on top of it might add to quality of your stay. The lodge is upgrading the mattresses this year and I... More

We didn't spend much time in the motel, so we were okay with the basic and simple furnishings. The bathroom sower curtain could be cleaned, on the plus side there was free wifi,a microwave and a small fridge in the room. The store and restaurant staff were friendly! This is a good base for hikers!

We stayed 2 nights ... Tuesday night and Wednesday night. The store and restaurant are not open on Wednesday as well as no housekeeping. We mentioned that we did not have enough coffee for two days ... but they forgot to bring us extra coffee for the second day. So ... we had to drive 10 miles to Rodeo, New... More

Me and three of my friends stayed at the Portal Peak Lodge while on a motorcycle journey across Arizona. The friendly owners welcomed us, the rooms were clean and quiet, and the food was great. Just what we needed after a 200+ mile day. We will definitely be back!

One step above tent camping and one step below staying in an rv. Just the necessities, all rather worn. Bed was not comfortable and sheets and towels frayed. But it was essentially clean and provided a very convenient place to crash after hiking. Winter hours for adjacent cafe are very inconvenient for tourists since they open almost too late (9am)... Step back to an earlier time where there isn't a chain store for 50-100 miles. Located in the *very* small community of Portal, the lodge makes a comfortable base for exploring, birding, and hiking a beautiful area. Fancy or frilly it isn't, but if you are happy with simple and clean rooms, a nice deck and access to their cafe... More
