Detailed Reviews
My boyfriend and I stayed here for 3 nights.
We're staying in a mix of hostels and B&Bs in South America, in this price range (just to give you an idea of our expectations- we're not super skint back packers but not extravagant either, just something in between),
Pros:
- good location near town, about 20 min walk
- Anna on reception was really helpful - we know virtually no Spanish!
- free wine 7-8pm every day. Yes really.
- good kitchen facilities - with utensils to cook, gas cookers, microwaves, shared fridge freezer
- we had a private ensuite and the shower was the best we've had in Brazil and Argentina including Buenos Aires. Scalding hot water. But we heard complaints from other travellers there that the shared shower was poor.
- pretty good breakfast - coffee, bread, sweet croissant, freshly made crepes, boiled eggs, cereal, fruit, juice
- nice and social but not a party hostel
- free washing machine to use
- quite cheap, we paid £15 per night for a double en suite
- let us stay in the lounge on the day of check out it wait for our evening bus with free locker use including lock
- offered daily activities for various prices including all you can eat bbq for 90 pesos, trek half day with good views for 220 pesos, horse riding for over 400 pesos (we only did the trek which was a bit overpriced but not a bad way to spend a morning) .
- good wifi connectivity and strength with two free computer terminals to use
- ten to fifteen minute walk from supermarket
- has a lounge with TV
- can pay deposits for a bus card 20 pesos, and towels 30 pesos additional.
-
Cons:
- really uncomfortable bedding and terrible sheets (itchy).
- pretty old and basic room but for the price it was fine
- got a bit noisy at night on a few occasions but this was just some inconsiderate people talking outside our room
Overall we really enjoyed it here!

We enjoyed our 5 nights at Hostel Empedrado very much! The rooms were clean - as was the kitchen - kitchen was well equipped, wine happy hour was nice, the very good breakfast not to forget and the pool and asado was available all the time to the guests. The staff was always very friendly and helpful in organizing whatsoever wish we had (private wine tour) :-) The guests are merely young people but everyone is welcomed here. We would always come back here when in Mendoza again! Thanks for making our stay so enjoyable!

I struggled to decide whether to give this a four or five star review (if 4.5 was an option I would chose that!).
Pros are numerous:
- Very friendly staff, with good advice and numerous tour booking options..
- Really well laid out - multiple well designed and well kept large rooms to sit, dine and relax in. -
- A big kitchen.
- A large groundfloor outdoor area and nice upstairs balcony area.
- On site DIY washing machines - free but for the washing powder
- Plenty of space and lockers to keep your backpacks if you have checked out by don't have a bus until much later.
- A free large glass of pretty decent wine every day (just ask at reception)
- Events like wine-tasting, empanada making and BBQ.
- Great atmosphere.
The only negative was our room (double, ensuite):
- It was in need of a bit of repair. Yes, it was well cleaned. But it was run-down (which probably stands-out more than it would otherwise do as the rest of the hostel is so well-kept!)
- The bed wasn't the greatest.
- Fairly small.
Plus, some people complain about the location being not central enough. That is somewhat true, but to be honest I don't class a 10-15 minute walk as a massive problem!
In summary - the room was a bit of a let-down. But because all the other aspects of the hostel were so good, and with no option for four and a half stars, I've got to give it a five out of five.

I'm sad not to give this place a good review, as the staff were kind and the atmosphere was good - imagine if you're a total budget backpacker and don't care about comfort etc, you'd have a great time here - there are good communal areas and lots of group activities (many free or cheap) to join in.
However... the beds were like rocks, pillows felt like they were made from scrunched up newspaper and our room was tiny and way too hot. We had an ensuite room on the top floor - the ensuite was so tiny, I had to sit 'side saddle' on the toilet - and I'm only 168cm tall! The shower was pretty crappy and all in all we weren't too impressed.
Other reviews rave about the outdoor area and pool - the pool - well, this might have once been a (tiny) pool, but when we were there (sept 2011) the pool was green and full of goldfish... definitely more of a pond than somewhere to cool off!
Location was ok - not super central in Mendoza, maybe a 15 minute walk to the CBD? Very close to a big supermarket, so good for self catering. Staff were friendly, shame the room and 'pool' were pretty terrible.

Hostel is good, friendly and helpful staff, good kitchen and washing machine! Lots of communal areas and very good for socialising. Also offer plenty of events and help with trips.
My room was very noisy though as it was next to the courtyard and the other side was the corridor to the kitchen, both very popular communal areas! Nobody seemed to care how late the noise went on.
Everything was very clean, free glass of wine every night although a few more bathrooms wouldn't go amiss.

Lovely staff, super friendly welcome even offered breakfast immediately after our early check in. Breakfast great, as much as you can eat cereal, pastries, bread, jams and dulce de leche (even homemade marmalade), juice, coffee, tea, milk and fruit. Free wine in the evening, again as much as you want between 7 - 9pm. Wifi perfect. Free use of washing machine, and lots of drying space on roof terrace. Pool, was a little grubby when we were there, but I am fairly sure if requested they would have cleaned it. Our room was the cheapest twin room, so had bunk beds and was pretty tight for space but do able when all the other facilities were so great. Really sweet rescue cat there too. Would 100% return to this hostel, had a lovely time there.

We stayed here for three days and the place was really chilled with kind staff and friendly people. There was a really good Asado, and free wine every night for two hours. It was tidy and clean, all though the bathrooms on the second floor were maybe too small to fit both toilet and shower in one room. Therefore it could get a bit messy out there. The other bathrooms were clean and big.
Overall a really nice experience. I would recommend it to everyone.

Met a lot of cool people here as there are social activities every night of the week so it is perfect for the solo traveler. I continued on to Cordoba with friends I met at the hostel. Activities included empenada cooking classes, all you can eat pizza night, asado (bbq), and happy hour every day with free wine tastings. The organized tours are great as well. I recommend the wine tasting bike tour.
And can not forget to mention the best breakfast ever! I extended my stay several times just because the breakfast was so good, seriously! Made to order eggs and crepes from the friendly cook and fruit, pastries and juice. I always made sure to wake up in time for breakfast, even after a late night out.
It's a short distance to the town center but I enjoyed the quiet streets and the walks into town. The hostel is quite cozy and the staff very friendly. One night we all went up to the roof and had a small fire and enjoyed the wine that we had bought that day in the vineyards.
Mendoza is a great city and when I return, will definitely stay at Empedrado again. Lots of great memories from this hostel. Gracias!

If you're considering booking this hostel, just do it! This was the best hostel we have stayed in in 3 months of traveling through South America. A few reasons;
- Claudia's crepes and eggs, made to order with a huge smile every morning.
- Fast WI-FI available everywhere
- Free washing machine/dryer
- Great breakout areas, TV room with DVD's and nice courtyard areas
- Great kitchen
- Great variety of tours and activities available including a few offered for free
- Excellent staff
- Good place to meet people and socialize

Maybe not the most fantastic hostel we've seen around the world. But they do have a few great pro's:
- free use of washing machine
- great staff! Speak perfectly english, friendly and helpful, make you feel at home.
- a lot of cool hostel activities. Like tours, but also in the hostel. Nice to meer other people.
- a lot of bathrooms, good kitchen.
- great wifi
- love sun terrace roof
- big lockers
- free wine hour every day
Why isn't it the best hostel than? Well, the place is a firm ten minutes walk to the center. It is a bit worn down, so don't look for beautiful interior and the showers have a small waterpressure. But i would definitly stay there again.
