We spent our first three nights in Buenos Aires at the Castelar, and it had everything we look for in a city hotel: cleanliness, comfortable beds, friendly and accommodating staff, and location, location, location. It's located half a block from Avenue 9 de Julio in the center of the city within walking distance of several colorful neighborhoods and subway stops.... More

We didn't stay at this hotel so I cannot comment on that, but I stopped in because it used to be a local hangout for Jorge Luis Borges and Federico Garcia Lorca. The staff was very gracious and let us enter the lobby and dining area. To be able to get a glimpse of a place they used to frequent... More

Good location, close to Avenue July 9! Old and small rooms. Reasonable cleanliness. Have a nice breakfast. Regular service. No parking! Good price with advance booking. Near the Obelisk and Lima station (subway). Next to several restaurants, cafes, kiosks and attractions.

The hotel is very well located in downtown. Staff was attentive (in the front desk they changed two $500 pesos bills that no other place accepted to $100 pesos) That said, the hotel needs a refurbishment, for example the carpets on the halls are in bad shape, the bathroom door was hard to close, the view from the windows of... I stayed at the Castelar for a week and was satisfied with this classic, grand hotel from Argentina's golden age. It is well maintained and top quality in what I consider to be the crucial issues - a great bed and a great shower. Front desk is efficient and nice and their buffet breakfast beats most of what I've seen... More

Older property, well maintained, excellent location close to Subway and Surface Transportation. The room and general state of hotel & Spa is excellent. Clean linen daily. Restaurant food is adequate but monotonousness after a few days. Do Not use in-hotel laundry service unless you have $$$$ to burn. Front Desk Personal friendly and helpful. Maid Service Excellent . The single... More

No doubt that this hotel was once glorious. The foyer is still grand. The location is still central and a good base for exploring. The rooms have long seen better days, but were clean. Rooms are warm and not all have air conditioning. We had a back room, no view but no noise. No safe in the room but one... More

I was lucky to book a bigger double room. It was a big, street facing room witha wonderful view. My friend complained a bit about the carpet since she is allergic. I like old buildings, so I loved the place. But it is indeed outdated. Not a real 4 stars hotel. It has flaws and qualities, but I would stay... More

This was my second stay at this hotel. Previously I enjoyed my stay at Castela and was happy to return. However the previous shabby chic was replaced by shabby and filthy. In addition, the air conditioning didn't work and it was 35°C. We were upgraded to another room which was better but not good enough. Rather than argue and affect... More

Staying in Montserrat

Neighborhood Profile
Montserrat
As part of the historic quarter of Buenos Aires, Montserrat is defined by the historical events that took place there and the landmarks that have stood the test of time. The Plaza de Mayo is at the center of this connection to history: countless public demonstrations have passed through this square, going back to the May Revolution of 1810. Walking the streets of Montserrat allows us to imagine what Buenos Aires may have looked like in the past: the Cabildo takes us back to the late 16th century, while the Palacio Barolo and the traditional cafés carry us to the early 20th. Nowadays, the neighborhood is inundated every day by office workers, buses, and taxis; still, the cobblestones, narrow sidewalks, and subway stations from the 1910s remind us that we are surrounded by history everywhere we look.
