We spent the night at Spier hotel after having Christmas lunch at one of the restaurants on the property. Although short, the stay was good. The main swimming pool was definitely my favorite thing about this hotel. It is large and sparkling clean. There were plenty of loungers available and staff were on hand for anything required. The pool is large enough to comfortably accomodate a number of guests at once. Dinner ordered from room service was good. The pizzas and desserts in particular. The breakfast buffet the following day was OK. There was a wide selection available but was nothing exceptional. I found that the service was a bit disorganized and not very attentive. After signing in at the entrance to the restaurant, you are left to your own devices. Should you need a server you have to track one down. With respect to the room - we were in a standard one - it was spacious and clean. The bed was comfy. No complaints there. Overall the stay was good and I will definitely visit again. The property itself is maintained exceptionally and has a air of tranquility. There is also plenty to do in the surrounding areas.

The attention to detail was exemplary in all facets of our visit and the farm is beautiful to stroll around with lots of pockets of entertainment, wining and dining on every level. I'm just sorry I didn't get an opportunity to visit the spa. Our stay was much too short!

The Spier property in its entirety is very impressive - well tended lawns and gardens, plenty of parking in convenient parking areas, many tables, chairs and garden benches for day visitors and strollers, but this review is about the hotel operation. Our room was large - very large even by South African standards - with a high ceiling, small windows and a cover for the veranda all combining to make the room very dark. The "years gone by" effect was supported by three wooden tables in the room plus wooden bedside tables either side of a king size bed. By contrast, the bathroom had more of a hospital than a cottagey look and definitely needs a makeover. The nearby pool area was well kept but the pool itself offered no handrail for those who may have needed it for starting or ending their dip. At the controlled access to the bar and dining area, it came as a surprise to the gatekeepers that guests may be entering merely for a drink at the bar, and this surprise carried over to the barman, fully occupied in satisfying orders from waiters on all sides; it also proved impossible to obtain any kind of snack to go with the drink. Later on, when we returned to enjoy the special Valentine's dinner, things went far more smoothly and we were well looked after to enjoy the special meal. Breakfast next morning also had its bumps. We were offered coffee literally at the door as we entered, but this was never delivered. We were told that cutlery was "on the table". It wasn't. Breakfast itself was very good - special commendation to the lady at the egg station - despite some difficulty with toast. Even though breakfast was due to be served until 11h00, one felt the disappointment of those turned away up to ten minutes before that time. A final comment: the hotel has commendably cut back on some aspects of service in the light of the Covid-19 threat. These cutbacks should be constantly reviewed to confirm their continuing relevance.

We had a great weekend experience at Spier experiencing many of the facilities. The accommodation is a very good level and the amenities and comfort factor very good. I loved the small swimming pool in the courtyards which felt like one's own private pool. The main pool area is fantastic too. The whole property is picturesque and well maintained. The picnic basket was well put together with a good array of items and you are spoilt for choice as to where to sit! The breakfasts are not bad Covid Protocols considered. Dinners were well presented and portions good. Some descriptions on the menu didn't seem to match what was served though - tasty nevertheless.. Great setting, great running, walking and cycling tracks. I'd spend a weekend there again.
