Travelers' Choice
In a city renowned for hospitality, Derwent House stands out as one of Cape Town's leading boutique guesthouses. Located in the heart of the vibrant Tamboerskloof/Gardens neighbourhood, this small hotel combines historic charm, contemporary Afro-chic style and all mod-cons for a uniquely Capetonian blend of ambience, warmth, and comfort. Our wonderful team completes the picture -- we go the extra mile for you and our guests leave as friends. We love colour and celebrate African design - you'll find it everywhere. But when it comes to the basics - like breakfast, bedding, showers, climate control, Wi-fi or news from home - we don't compromise so you don't have to. At Derwent House, you're steps away from the hustle and buzz of Kloof Street, with its collection of superb restaurants, bars and trendy boutiques--and just a few further to the nightlife hub of Bree and Long Streets. Yet just a short car journey from the Table Mountain cable car, the beaches of Clifton or Camp's Bay, and the V&A Waterfront. There's nowhere more central -- but come and see for yourself. We're waiting for you!

I cannot say enough good things about the Derwent House Hotel. From the moment I booked the hotel in December 2023, I received messages from the hotel sharing information about what to do in Cape Town: restaurants, tours, events, etc. Upon my arrival, I received such amazing care from all of the staff. Special appreciation to Oliver, Luca, Gladys and Mercy. They treated me like family. The staff who supported the kitchen were gracious and warm. The hotel is beautifully decorated. Breakfast is plentiful and delicious. I enjoyed having a scrumptious dessert along with a glass of port or Amarula courtesy of the hotel. I appreciated being close to Kloof Street so that I could walk to great restaurants like Black Sheep and Carne. Using Uber to get around was easy and economical. I enjoyed waking up to a spectacular view of Table Mountain each day. The Derwent House Hotel has captured my heart and I will stay here again when I return to Cape Town! I wish I could give this hotel more than 5 stars!

Such a well located hotel with restaurants around the corner and the Waterfront and Table Mountain terminal both just a cheap cab ride away. The hotel is lovely. Our room was compact, well looked after and overlooked the pretty pool area. The breakfast was very good. All the staff were super helpful but Patience was the stand out for us.

Lovely small hotel in a great area. What a welcoming place with staff that go above and beyond and make you feel at home. We were thinking about staying at the V+A waterfront and so glad we didn't. Great communications before our arrival and helped make all sorts of arrangements (guides, restaurants, drivers, something from the pharmacy). Shout out for Mercy and Luca and all of the staff!

This is a brilliant place to stay in Cape Town. It is conveniently situated in a quiet road off Kloof Street within easy walking distance of a myriad of bars and restaurants including the famous Black Sheep. Derwent House is small and more like staying with friends than being in a hotel. The staff are super-friendly and helpful really going the extra mile to make sure guests are happy. Our room was large and comfortable with aircon, a well appointed bathroom and views of Table Mountain. Breakfasts were delicious with a good choice of dishes. There is an honesty wine bar and cake servery. The pool is small but a welcome bonus in hot weather with a good sized lounging area. The sitting room is comfortable with colourful furnishings and decorations. Whenever we visit Cape Town we prefer to stay here. Highly recommended.

We cannot say enough positive things about Derwent House - the venue was gorgeous, the bed was comfortable, the staff were extemely welcoming and friendly, the breakfast was delicious, and the location was great (we loved the quick access to nearby hikes as well as great restaurants on Kloof street). This was our first time to South Africa (Africa for that matter) and we were a bit nervous - but the team at the Derwent House made us feel welcomed and at ease from day one; Cape Town is now easily one of our favourite cities. The service at the Derwent Hiuse was truly exceptional from quick email responses (prior to arrival), to eagerness to assist us however they could to make our trip memorable (during our stay), to bending over backwards to arrange for my husbands airbud to be mailed to our next location in SA (after our stay). If you have the chance to stay at Derwent House - do it!

A lovely boutique hotel in a nice area of Cape Town. We are a family of four who recently stayed for five nights at this fantastic residence. The bedrooms are comfortable and clean, the communal living and dining areas are cosy and African themed and the pool area is nice for relaxing or having an evening drink. The breakfasts are delicious with compliments to the talented chef. In the afternoon free tea and cakes are provided as well as honesty bar with gin and wine. The best part about this hotel though is the staff. Luca and the team do a fantastic job of making everyone welcome, ensuring they have a great experience. Luca recommended a number of activities to do in the city and also further afield and took care of transport bookings for us. A special thankyou also for making my daughter's birthday so special by decorating the breakfast table so beautifully (Oliver) and, again, to the chef for baking her a delicious chocolate cake.

Cosy, small scale and the perfect start for our vacation in South Africa. We enjoyed the African decor that was never tacky, but always stylish. The room was elegant with a nice deck to sit outside. The breakfast was excellent, personnel very helpful. The location was good: a residential neighborhood but we could easily walk to the city center (good walk). Lots of eating options. The personnel was very helpful to inform where you could and could not walk after dark. Expensive but very worthwhile.

Many grateful thanks, MaartenMike, for your very kind words: we really appreciate it! All the more so as you're so widely travelled and have had such a wealth of experiences around the world--it's great to hear that we stacked up favourably and helped get your South African adventure off to a good start. You've highlighted all the aspects we work hard to get right in terms of ambience, comfort, breakfast and of course, service . . . So pleased that we were able to help you with some insider tips on getting around and generally making the most of your Cape Town stay. You're so right: we're spoiled for gastronomic choice in our quiet little residential neighbourhood just steps from Kloof Street with all its great restaurants, cafes and bars -- and all just a short ride or moderate walk (in your case 😊) from the city's main beaches, the mountain and other attractions . Thank you so much for choosing to stay with us on this occasion and taking the time to share your experience here. We hope to be able to welcome you back on a future visit -- and look forward to hosting lots of friends and family in the meantime--we love referrals! Warm Cape Town greetings from all of us at Derwent House to you both, Anahid

We have just had a wonderful stay at Derwent House and cannot recommend highly enough. It's a gorgeous, vibrant and quirky decor with a very personalised boutique hotel atmosphere. The lounge and breakfast area overlooks the lovely pool area. and you feel like you're in a little oasis. Luca and the team are amazing... so friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Our room was spacious and super clean and the bed was very comfortable. The guest house is just a stones throw from the eclectic and thriving Kloof Street... packed with trendy bars and eateries. If you're looking for a beautifully colourful home away from home and a taste of more local Cape Town you'll love Derwent House.

Dear Ross, Thank you so much for your detailed review and recommendation! It's so great to hear from happy guests that we got things right for you--and as de facto "decorator-in-chief," a special thanks from me personally for your lovely feedback on the ambience and decor 🤗. "Oasis" is exactly the feel we try to create at Derwent House, so love this description! And what would an oasis be without generous hospitality: we're so fortunate to have some of the best people in the city on our team, ably led by Luca, who is justly famous for going the extra mile to make your stay the very best it can be. Delighted that our apartment was so perfect for you: many of our returning guests love the extra space, privacy and independence it affords, with the full services and facilities of the hotel right next door easily accessible. It's the perfect solution for travellers like you. The whole team joins me in thanking you for taking the time to share this great feedback on this platform -- but also in congratulating you both again for your incredible achievement in completing the Cycle Tour without much fuss or preparation: you're absolute stars and we collectively take our hats off to you! Hope you'll be back next year for round 2?!! Very best wishes from all of us to you both, Anahid

Derwent House is the best. Top-notch service in a nice area. The whole team is helpful in making you feel welcome and at home. Expect lots of little attentions and special care. We would return in a heartbeat — an excellent alternative to the mainstream hotels downtown.

Such a lovely heartfelt tribute to our team, HenriL: Merci beaucoup from all of us. "Best" is an extraordinary accolade -- especially from such experienced and discerning travellers as yourselves. I'm delighted that you found all the special little touches and attention to detail to your liking. We all enjoyed taking care of you both and becoming briefly acquainted. Yes, it's true that you experience the city differently from an intimate boutique property like ours than from the large mainstream hotels. Our ethos is to ensure you arrive as guests and depart as friends -- and come back again [in a heartbeat 🥰) and again, as almost half of our guests do. Hope to see you again next time! Meanwhile, all the very best from the whole team, Anahid
