2022 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best
In a city renowned for hospitality, Derwent House stands out as one of Cape Town's leading boutique guesthouses. Located in the heart of the vibrant Tamboerskloof/Gardens neighbourhood, this small hotel combines historic charm, contemporary Afro-chic style and all mod-cons for a uniquely Capetonian blend of ambience, warmth, and comfort. Our wonderful team completes the picture -- we go the extra mile for you and our guests leave as friends. We love colour and celebrate African design - you'll find it everywhere. But when it comes to the basics - like breakfast, bedding, showers, climate control, Wi-fi or news from home - we don't compromise so you don't have to. At Derwent House, you're steps away from the hustle and buzz of Kloof Street, with its collection of superb restaurants, bars and trendy boutiques--and just a few further to the nightlife hub of Bree and Long Streets. Yet just a short car journey from the Table Mountain cable car, the beaches of Clifton or Camp's Bay, and the V&A Waterfront. There's nowhere more central -- but come and see for yourself. We're waiting for you!

We had a wonderful stay! Derwent House is conveniently situated within walking distance of a selection of excellent restaurants. We loved the eclectic, Afrochic decor and the attention to detail. Spotlessly clean with everything you could possibly need to ensure an enjoyable stay. Armin and Anahid will be certain to give you a warm welcome and great service. We will be back!

We recently stayed at the Derwent House while on our honeymoon. In its entirety, it was the best hotel I have stayed at. Each day starts with a full breakfast spread of fresh juice, oatmeal, pancakes, yogurt and more. The staff is there to greet you as they offer to make you a coffee or tea and ask you about your plans for the day to see if they can offer any advice. While you're out visiting Cape Town, housekeeping will tidy up your room and leave you a warm water bladder to have you coming back to a cozy bed. Before making your way up to your room, you're greeted at the door with a nightcap on the house with a warm smile from the staff asking about your day. In addition to some chocolate treats you'll get on your bed, the staff also prepares a suggestion of activities to do for the following day with detailed descriptions. It's also worth noting the unique layout of the hotel. It feels more like you're in a large house as the common area and dining area invites guests to mingle. We made friends with visitors from Texas, New York, France, London and Australia. The decor and layout felt homey while having some lounge-like feelings with the deck, pool and hottub.  Last, and most important, is the people that work at Derwent House. Always with a big smile on their face, their genuine interest in you as a guest stood out more than any other hospitality experience I've had. We found ourselves several times in deep conversation with them. This stay is the complete experience, near great restaurants, and at a very reasonable price. Cannot recommend this place enough to provide a great experience. P.S. Ask them about day tours - they set us up with 2 that were amazing.

Wow, Kevin R -- what an incredible endorsement: you've really made our day! Can't get better than "best hotel . . ." (Although we won't stop trying 🥰). And for all of us, best of all in your wonderfully detailed review of your stay is the intimacy and ambience of the hotel that made you feel at home and even encouraged you to make some new friends along the way . . . This is truly what we aspire to in our hospitality journey and it's so gratifying to get such lovely feedback from guests that we're getting it right. Not to minimise your glowing recognition of the human factor in making your stay exceptional. We're very well aware that our amazing team are truly what sets Derwent House apart amongst the many excellent boutique hotels in Cape Town. With a warmth, generosity and dedication that can't be taught, we're incredibly proud of each and every member of our team that make our guest experience superior. Thank you so much for highlighting this aspect of your stay: feedback like yours puts a big smile on everyone's face! Heartfelt thanks again for such a comprehensive, detailed review of your Derwent House experience. We take our responsibility when hosting honeymooners very seriously: we know we're framing lifelong memories. We're all thrilled to learn that we got it right for the two of you and want to officially invite you back for an anniversary celebration in future -- just let us know which one it will be. We promise you an even better Derwent House next time! Warm greetings and grateful thanks from the whole team, Anahid

Lovely boutique hotel below Table Mountain. Beautiful interior with lovey amenities and a great selection for breakfast. Pool and hot tub are available. We booked a room with a deck that overlooks the pool and had a view of the harbor. The staff were all very friendly and helpful, especially Berwen and Luca, who both went out of their way to make the stay friendly and personable.

Room was comfortable and lovely looking onto courtyard with pool. Luca, Patience and all the team were very thoughtful and helpful. Everyone came across as genuine nice people. Location handy for Kloof Street and a very quick uber or stroll down to the waterfront or up table mountain. Breakfast was good and everyone helped provide me with excellent coffee and tea whenever i needed it! Will definitely try to stay again when next in Cape Town.

Thanks, TomR, for your concise and thoughtful feedback on your recent stay. It's always great to hear from happy guests over a very busy period--very glad to learn that we were a perfect central base for you during your visit. Our central location in a quiet residential neighbourhood is a fortuitous asset -- and proximity to Kloof Street with it's array of great wining and dining spots a bonus. Coffee's hot and we'll be waiting for you next time! Thanks again for taking the time to share your experience here. All the very best from Cape Town, Anahid & the team

This was our second time staying at Derwent House and we are so happy they survived Covid. Luca and his team always go the extra mile for us, from the thoughtful arrival coffee and water to the beautiful pool, freshly prepared breakfast and the afternoon wine and gin bar. The rooms are big, clean and comfortable and the beds are amazing for a peaceful sleep. Parking on site and within 10 minutes of almost all the famous Cape Town landmarks you cannot go wrong with its positioning to be in the heart of all the tourist activities. We will be back! Thank you Derwent House team!

Seven of us travelled to SA with our first stay being in Cape Town. We arrived at Derwent house to a warm welcome from Luca and Derwent family. I say family because that's how they made us feel, like long lost arriving family. From the moment you step through the front door into the welcoming lounge area you know this place is something special. Beautifully decorated with an abundance of quirky nik naks and art. The rooms are beautifully presented, more quirky art with large comfortable beds. Our room doors opened onto the pool area, scattered with table, sunbeds and shady spots to sit. A few steps out from the room a magnificent view of Table Mountain, the hotel being nestled on the slopes of this natural monument. At night, not a sound, the hotel is in a quiet area. It is within walking distance of many bars and restaurants and a short taxi ride away from all the sites. We hired a minibus which we kept in the locked hotel car park. The breakfast was simply wonderful, a wide selection breads, fruit, yogurt based fruit mixes, cold meats, cheese, toast, condiments galore and a wide range of cooked options. The helpfulness of all the Derwent crew cannot be overstated, from the day to day looking after us to buying and fitting a sim card so we could use local taxi services with ease. The friendliness & kindness of all the team is what really put the icing on the cake for us. Everyone had a big smile, all the time. Would we stay again, yes. Would we stay anywhere else in Cape Town, no.

The other 5-star reviews say it all and I agree with them completely: it really is an amazing hotel. I wish there were more hotels like this in the world - but it's the staff that you won't find elsewhere - just truly friendly and helpful - Patience, Berwen, and Luca all made our stay so pleasant. Even when we had to cancel twice because of Covid, we received a friendly response from the hotel owner. We stayed four nights in early April. Our room was no. 3 upstairs from the entrance lobby - we had a wide balcony overlooking the pool and could see Table Mt. off to the side. Beautifully decorated with everything one needed. The best was coming back from a day of touring and entering our room to have lovely music playing softly on the sound system - I liked it so much that they gave me the you tube link so I could listen to it at home. The other delightful touch was the delicious carrot cake that was available in the afternoon (and sometimes other cakes). Couldn't resist it! Glad we chose this hotel over the big hotels at the waterfront. Also, we booked two full-day tours with a guide associated with the hotel. Roger was fantastic - very easy to be with - he took us to both the Winelands and the Cape of Good Hope. Hiring a driver/guide makes it easy for those of us who drive on the wrong side of the road. I highly recommend Derwent House!

You are amazing, Dolly B! You two were truly the best guests ever -- so curious and enthusiastic about South Africa and Cape Town, so appreciative of everything: the world needs more guests like you! And on behalf of the team: a huge thank you for this very public shout-out 🥰. We know that we've got the very best people on board, but it's always great to have that feedback directly from guests. You've made our [collective] day! Feedback like yours is the reason we've been rated No. 1 for Service in South Africa for the past 5 years on this platform, so thank you so much for this reaffirmation. I'm so pleased that you enjoyed our music tracks and the YouTube link--may you think of us every time you listen. And carrot cake awaits your next visit -- we'll have expanded the cake menu even further by then. Have also passed on your lovely commendation to Roger who sends you a big hug and many thanks--he says he's rarely had such fun with guests as he did with the two of you. Finally, as the "owner" on the other end of the e-mail with you for the duration, it is we who need to thank you. Without guests like you willing to postpone their bookings rather than cancel, we would not have survived the past two very challenging years . . . We owe it all to you. Thank you both so much for coming to stay with us. We really hope to see you back again one day and promise an even better Derwent House on your next visit. All the very best from the whole team in sunny Cape Town, Anahid

In the past we have stayed in the V&A waterfront area, so this year we decided to try Derwent, which is in a residential area just off Kloof Street. It was definitely the right decision - we stayed at Derwent for 6 nights at the beginning of our SA stay and again for 4 nights at the end of our time in SA. Derwent has a cosy, small hotel feel which made us immediately feel at home. A super comfortable bed + relaxing pool area + delicious breakfast + yummy afternoon treats + restaurants close by = a great stay. Thank you Armin, Anahid, Luca and the Derwent team for making our time in Cape Town even more special! We look forward to staying with you again next year.

Due to omicron travel restrictions we were the only guests at the hotel, but the staff pulled out all the stops to make our stay a perfect one and treated us like family. The location is excellent in a quiet area just steps away from Kloof St and dozens of restaurants. We stayed in the suite which was basically a small apartment with a separate lounge area, kitchenette and a beautiful outdoor terrace. Every attention to detail is taken care of from local recommendations, reservations, complimentary snacks, drinks and nightly turndown service. On Christmas morning they made a Christmas themed breakfast just for us with crackers to pull. They even gave us both thoughtful Christmas gifts. We would 100% recommend!
