Stayed here for a night as we transitioned from Kruger to Sabi. The location, right outside Kruger’s main gate is perfect. The layout of the hotel is unique and well thought out. Great coffee shop and store next to reception. The new rooms are really nice and extremely well appointed. The rooms could compete with any JW Marriott rooms worldwide. The internet is the best we had in South Africa. This should be a 5 star hotel. What’s the problem? Service! After a long day of safari, we placed a room service order at about 6pm. Ordered a burger and a prawn curry. After about and hour and 15 minutes, I call room service to see where the food is. They say they will call me back. 15 minutes go by. I call the front desk. They connect me with room service. They say they are preparing my order. 15 more mins pass with a knock at the door. One cold hamburger is delivered! I ask where the other entree is- no idea. 15 more minutes pass and I call back to room service- apparently they ran out of curry, so i ask them to make another hamburger. 30 minutes later(about 2 and a half hours from placing the order), the second burger arrives… at least this one was hot and fresh! I tell the man from room service that I am not paying for the order. 30 mins later… another knock on the door and the room service manager wants to discuss the bill. He says they have been trying to call me and that the room’s phone can only make calls and is not receiving calls. Never heard that one before! In the end, didn’t pay for the dinner… This property has great potential… Management needs to step up and focus on service.!

I was fortunate to win a 2 night stay at a Protea hotel of my choice. My husband is a Prokard holder. We were supposed to have visited this hotel in 2020, but due to Covid we had to cancel. When the opportunity thus arose and we could book, we grabbed the opportunity to go. We booked an extra night using one of his Prokard vouchers. Our 3 nights ended up being absolutely wonderful. We have stayed in Protea hotels country wide on about 36 occasions over the past 10 years, and this stay ranks up there with the best. The room was very comfortable and clean. The hotel grounds are beautiful. The pools are stunning, it's a shame we did not take a swim in the infinity pool. Maybe one day... Staff members were all very professional and friendly - to name only a few: Vusi, David M, Hostesses - breakfast & dinner, Louise - trainee/casual, Mbekaphi and Zandile. Both breakfast and dinner buffets were excellent on all 3 days during our stay. And I forgot to mention the most important point of all - location, location, location. Being right at the entrance to the Kruger National Park is the 1st prize. Do go and pay them a visit. You will not regret it. Thank you Protea hotel Kruger gate and Protea Hotels by Marriott, we will be back.

My family of 4 stayed at the Protea Marriot Kruger for 4 nights during the school break (26-29 April 2021). It is on the doorstep of the Kruger Gate. Room in general was clean and fresh. TV is never going to be clear (due to the location). Staff were friendly. Dinner staff could walk around the entire boma area taking drink orders. I thought they concentrated too much on the tables around the center fire. Maintenance (night shift bloke) on 26 April 2021 was quick when we had a problem with aircon and a jammed door. The boma buffet dinners were of a high standard. Served between 6.30pm to 9.30pm. Sumptuous selection of hot meats, some delicious steak and lamb curries, pastas, stir fries, side veg, starch, soup, etc. There was also 1 or 2 items of venison (game) served on each night. It just adds to your African bush experience. On a positive note, there was ample supply of food in the main buffet. If you are not into venison, then there is the usual chicken and lamb, or chicken and beef, or chicken and gamon, etc. Starters - wide variety and appetising. Desserts could definitely use more flambe (got wiped out on all nights). Perhaps look at adding a trifle dish. Too many mini tarts for my liking. Just some other anomalies that need addressing: Unfortunately, when we checked in, the aircon in our family room was totally ineffective. Unusually hot weather in late-April (32c to 36c). Had to change rooms (thankfully, one was available with a functional aircon). Day shift maintenance needs to do proper checks/tests. Ants on the infinity pool deck crawling and biting your toes. Maybe, deck needs spraying more often with insecticide. Please look at why tapped draft was not available on pool deck bar.. Hot breakfast was good. Not everyone eats poppy seed muffins, so please look at blueberry muffins as well. Tomatoes (for grilling) was only available on some days. Not sure why. Bottleneck at the grill for eggs. What was really annoying was the cutting of ques / confusion / congestion at the egg grill. Perhaps, some sinage instructing people to que from one side will greatly help. The grill chefs (doing eggs) are oblivious as to who came first or second, as they are focusing on their job. When you que for 10 minutes for your eggs, and then a person comes in and gets served before you is most annoying, especially, if you want to eat quickly and get into the park. So, simple, clearly visible sinage could help. The pond / stream under the suspended walkway could use cleaning up. Too much dried branches dumped on the side. Wild banana trees and palms could use some pruning. The outer tables of the boma dining area could do with a few extra light globes in certain spots, as it was a bit dark. All-in-all, stay was very enjoyable, and we will return.

This is a great hotel if you want to explore Kruger, but can’t stay in the park. Room clean and adequate not fancy but decent enough. Good value for money. The dinners were excellent the gym well equipped and the grounds very well kept. If I have one complaint it’s breakfast I found choice and amount of food on offer below par. The food wasn’t replenished quickly and the wait for cooked breakfasts was too long. One guy making eggs for the whole hotel. Other then that found the service friendly and good. Would I return, definitely!
