Epitomizing the legacy and endurance of what has become known as the grand dame of the Vaal is the progressive reinvention of present day needs and client experiences. The site where the Riviera on Vaal Resort is situated today was initially built as a kiosk to service pleasure seeker to the river who were popping down for a swim, boat ride or picnic on the banks. American film maker, entrepreneur and developer, Isadore William Schlesinger, fell in love with the area and built a pristine hotel and the doors to the hotel were first opened on 29 August 1936. Sunday dinner and a movie became a hit as South Africans did not have the privilege of television until 1976, the Riviera on Vaal hotel was the place to be and be seen. The hotel, survived the devastating floods of early 1975, when most of the low-lying areas of Vereeniging were completely submerged in water, including most of the hotel grounds and the entire adjacent golf course. Having stayed at Riviera on Vaal many years ago, I did think the hotel needed to be upgraded and refurbished. Having said that the hotel has and is still undergoing various refurbishments. I stayed in a refurbished room which was extremely spacious, modern, great decor and fantastic views of the gardens and river. The hotel is situated in a great location, beautiful and well maintained gardens and a golf course. There are various activities for adults from wine tastings to golf & a great spa. A small kids play area with regular boat rides cruising along the river. Great venue for corporate functions, occasions and outdoor events. The food was good while the service was average. Overall, once the hotel has been completely renovated and refurbished, I would recommend a visit to experience the new offerings they will introduce.

Dear Sir/ Madam I would like to bring the following to your attention. We were booked into your hotel from the 23-27 April. We encountered the following issues: 1. I had done the booking online via your reservation system. I had sent an e-mail asking if payment would be deducted from the credit card and was told that would happen. I received a PDF confirmation see attached which says “Paid in full”. But when we checked in we were told that I had to make payment which I did. The reception and your systems need to all work seamlessly so that customers are not making double payments etc. The correct communication is critical. What if I hadn’t carried my card or had enough money when we arrived thinking that the booking was paid and confirmed. 2. We found a towel that still had lipstick on it when she went to shower Friday night. 3. The room wasn’t cleaned well, the mugs still had honey in the mugs. 4. Friday night, we saw a small rat/mouse run across the room floor. We mentioned this to the reception the next morning expecting some kind of pest control or at least some feedback but nothing was done or advised. 5. The room telephone did not work or any of the extensions given which made it very difficult to communicate anything at all. 6. The Eskom issue was not the fault of the hotel but some kind of communication/signage could have been put up or sent to guests as we weren’t aware why certain things were not working. 7. There were no new towels placed in our room one day and we had to request these but by dialling from cell phones as the landline wasn’t working. 8. The breakfast was a very long wait each morning to receive food. Not having enough Danish tarts/croissants surely the hotel knows how many people are booked for breakfast and should have sufficient food. 9. The one and only dinner was also an extremely long wait for the food. The orders were incorrect, we requested calamari grilled and it arrived as fried with batter. The shooters ordered were Bob Marleys and we received B52s. 10. There was a horrible sewage like smell each day and we did see staff working on what looked like the pipe/drain on the ground. With all of these we were willing to be somewhat understanding but the final straw was the morning the day before check out, where we had noticed R100 missing from a bag. It is impossible to lock every single item in the safe and in fact every item is of value to a person including clothes, toiletries etc. It is unacceptable that someone can go through someone’s bag especially in a time like Covid-19 where hygiene and safety is so important. In fact the cupboards where these items were left should not have been touched at all, what was the need for opening the cupboards? We also know that cleaning staff were putting items in bags so that was probably a way of having a look inside them but once again this should not be done by cleaning staff. We have been to many hotels and they clean around or neaten up but not leave things back in bags etc. Some of these issues were then reported to the manager on duty that morning who took a very defensive approach. The response was arrogant and he actually responded rudely. Coming from a service environment, I know how important it is to listen to customers and provide apologies and possible solutions. Well this was not done and left a very bad taste as we left the hotel. We did not receive any feedback about any of these issues from the manager. The front desk and other staff who do not have the answers were trying to be helpful at times but this was the only redeeming quality about the hotel.

The place is very nice, refreshing and very welcoming I liked the rooms although bathrooms are small but overall everything was nice from the reception desk ladies Ntabiseng, Elaine, Anna and others...restaurant the staff was excellent people like Lungile, Rose fourie and Rijk their service was crisp our only dull and disappointing moment was the inyama grill house please improve the service there and remove the lady who manages that place because I feel she is racist and judgmental...she is ruining the image of the whole place..,I will rate the Riviera resort 4 because of that lady who manages the inyama grill house, this is a new south Africa such attitude and people need to be blotted out and trashed .

Front desk and support staff were very welcoming and generally friendly. The pool area was also amazing. However the hotel has not been modernised. WiFi was not working, aircon very old. In the kitchen: no green tea, no bananas, no chilies, no health bread etc. They basically have glorified chefs who clearly don't know that they are there for the customers. We were also served pineapples that were off! The bathrooms are way too small. The boat ride was a good experience that left a good taste in my mouth something that the kitchen couldn't really achieve. I wouldn't go back until the place has been upgraded and the kitchen service has been improved. Only if the owners could see the amazing potential of that place!

Amazing sunny day, awesome views - had an issue with it being only a buffet menu though we wanted to order some tea and dessert we weren’t allowed and the waiter made us sit and wait till 4pm and when the time passed he didn’t attend to us we had to look for him, then only he said he would Find out about the menus from the chef? He was not attentive to us at all - highly unimpressed by that, then he did bring the menus and took long to assist us with our orders. It wasn’t very busy or full but we feel he lacked the right touch with customer care - his name is Thithi, so perhaps you could look into the way your waiters operate and perhaps also you could have an A la Carte level of the menu for some people who aren’t up for a buffet as you’re losing out on customers that way, people will just walk by the gardens and leave.
