The hotel is a great oasis in the heart of Johannesburg. The service was great and the staff take care of you throughout your stay. The only complaint was that it is under construction, which wasn’t noted anywhere on their website. The one pool is closed and the other is surrounded by noisy construction. Unfortunately, this made it not very relaxing when we wanted to lay by the pool. Once this is complete, I think the hotel will be lovely, but wish that this was told before we booked. It’s also part of the luxury hotel collection, so great for Amex platinum holders.
A truly beautiful hotel where traditional art and crafts are beautifully curated throughout. I can see why Mandela was happy to live here for 6 months after his release from Robbin island and that it has hosted so many famous faces. The Rooms are beautiful , food fabulous and every detail has been thought about it , including a free mini bar and complimentary champagne. It feels like a very special and tranquil place The managers and staff are wonderful. Happy and smiling and so helpful. And do ask for see the Mandela suite if it’s free. Wonderful. My only down is that this was just an overnight stay. I would thoroughly recommend this hotel. Magnificent
Lucky enough to stay here in March, August and October in 2022. Our first visit to this hotel was actually 16 years ago! We have tried many other hotels in Jo’burg but this is our favourite. The setting is beautiful and the whole hotel a haven. Staff and food cannot be faulted and the Spa is really first class. There are a few renovations going on as I write this but I think they will be finished shortly.
It’s such a sense of arrival - as the garage gates open to a little piece of paradise. Carefully decorated, and extremely well managed, the Saxon is such an extraordinary option when in Joburg. Some highlights were the quality of the bed linen and bathroom Terry, the nice photos of the welcome amenity cards, the smoky and attentive staff, and that courtyard with nice thick wood tables and chairs - wow that was my favourite of all times! What a place for a drink!
I am not sure where to start. The service was top notch. They had sat add everywhere who well trained and passionate about providing great service. The room was beautiful with everything we might want or need. All the small details were attended to. Comfortable bed, large rain shower, too quality bathing supplies, lots of bottled water and a bottle of champagne to greet us. We had dinner and breakfast— both fantastic. We travel a lot and stay at luxury hotels. Definitely in our top 5.
The outstanding feature out of a range of superlative aspects of this hotel relates to the staff. From the moment of arrival to that of departure everyone welcomes one with a beaming smile. Nothing is really too much for them to achieve for a guest. I am unable to mention them all by name but feel that each and every one merits a special acknowledgement and praise. As to the hotel our room was spacious and very comfortable. We looked out onto a koi pond with a patio carefully disguised with greenery. All aspects of the room were special. The decoration was muted but the accessories added vibrancy. There was a dining area adjacent to a sitting one. The bed was enormous and directly behind was a large bathroom containing the bath itself and two basins separated by the dressing area. The showers was separate and had one of the best showers (hot and powerful) that we had ever experienced. There may have been no coffee or tea making facilities but this did not matter as a simple call to the butler resulted in coffee appearing rapidly complete with cold or hot milk. The hotel is renown for its art work which lines each corridor whether hung on the wall or standing. There is one wall festooned solely with baskets from across the country. Breakfast is served with great care. The choice is wide and one may ask for other options. Quality is high There are two restaurants including one which is open air. If chilly then heaters are placed next to one. There is also a bar with a knowledgable bar keeper and a small terrace reserved only for hotel gusts. Swimming pools offer both heated and non water. The spa is excellent offering all the services required. My facial was superb conducted by a very proficient lady. We did not want to leave. Location is in Sandton with an ambience of peace. The gardens provide a good place to stroll.…
From the minute you pass through the gate onto the Saxon property, you are transformed from Johannesburg to your own private island. We have stayed at many beautiful hotels in the past, but the Saxon is truly at the very top of our list. Our room was so spacious and well appointed, and we were told we had one of the smaller suites. We stayed before we left on safari and again after safari prior to our flights back home. Each time, a chilled bottle of champange was waiting for us in our suite. It's worth a visit to the Saxon just to view the incredible artwork. The food in the dining room was delicious and they accomodated our schedule. When we first arrived, it was very late morning, between breakfast and lunch, but they seated us right away and we were able to choose from the menu. Each and every employee at the Saxon was incredible, any concern we had was attended to immediately. I only wished I remembered everyone's name. By the time we left, we considered the concierge, Masood, a friend. He arranged 2 tours for us with our guide Leonard who was so accomodating and knowledgeable, we throughly enjoyed both tours. Another name that comes to mind is Onisius, who was our waiter the day we departed, although all the dining room staff was great. On our second stay, we had a small private patio surrounded by beautiful greenery next to the koi pond. Everything about the Saxon is incredible!…
Unfortunately, we spent only one night here. We would love to come back. The hotel, grounds and room were gorgeous, the service was impeccable and the food was delicious. We came in late on an intercontinental flight. They had snacks and drinks waiting for us, so much that we did not order dinner! We loved the koi pond!
I think this is the best hotel in Johannesburg. I would say the Saxon far superior than the four seasons west cliff as the service and attention to detail by staff is top of the line? The restaurant is amazing. I would personally like to thank Sabelo Ngubeni for his amazing service during my visit to SA.
The reception, the service, the accommodations and the facilities and surroundings were first class. We recommend the Saxon very highly! It was our first time in SA and we were very impressed. The place is super classy. We will go back and stay longer.
