Detailed Reviews
My 1st visit here although my brother has been staying here for many years. Excellent room with everything you could possibly want, fridge, in a kitchen area, fresh water, a drink and chocolate, iron, clothes steamer etc etc. The outdoor pool that my room opened onto looked very inviting. Lovely soft towels and wonderful shower. Restaurants within walking distance so no real need to drive. WiFi code for room and breakfast room. Marguerite is so nice as are all the staff. Very tasty breakfast. In an area of Pretoria that has lots of Embassies so feels very safe.

The guesthouse is a short ride to the downtown center. Location is near the Presidency, which is good for running/walking. The rooms are very comfortable and well appointed with a small kitchen. The atmosphere is great, including an "on your honor" bar on a rooftop terrace. Breakfast is good, typically served at a large dining room table with all guests eating at the same table (though frequently at different times).
Internet is reasonably fast (accommodates skype). Good for a business trip.

I have stayed at Fern Ivy for over three years now after being referred by friends. Each and every stay has been a warm and homely experience with attentive Staff and excellent breakfasts. My daughter attended Tuks University during this time and we would often stay together at Fern Ivy during her exams as she felt like she was at home and relaxed. Needless to say, she has now graduated and the next time I am fortunate enough to stay at Fern Ivy will be for my next business trip. A huge thank you to Marguerite and her wonderful Staff for their warm hospitality.

We spent two weeks here as part of a business trip. All the staff were very friendly and went out of their way to accommodate our needs (e.g. early breakfast) - remembering our meal preferences for example. The well-equipped kitchenette in the room gave us the option of buying from the supermarket (10 minute walk around the corner) and making salads so we didn't have to rely on take-out/eating out every day and meant that we could work easily in the room or on the roof. The area is safe with many embassies nearby. It's a stone's throw from the Union Buildings a 5-minute drive (or 20 minute walk) from Hatfield Gau Train station. The city centre is also walkable. It was like a home-from-home; I would strongly recommend it over a larger more informal business hotel.

There are no words to describe Fern Ivy. It is unsurpassed. Marguerite and her husband are extremely welcoming and energetic and easy to relate to. They picked us up from the train station and gave us a little driving tour of Pretoria on the way back to the guesthouse. Marguerite then took us on a tour of the house, which was architecturally modern with classic decor and cool features - two roof decks with great views! We had our choice of rooms - and it was a tough decision! They were both exquisite, but we chose the one that was closer to the pool and hot tub. We were tired from traveling and thought we would enjoy dinner in by the pool. Marguerite even helped us order sushi from a local restaurant. The rooms are large, well furnished, and equipped with kitchenettes. We really enjoyed the complimentary decanter of sherry. And of course, there was plenty of Amarula at the bar!
We weren't there long enough to use the fitness room, but Marguerite is quite the runner and knows of a lot of good routes in the area. If you're fast enough, she'll even run with you! In the morning my husband and I (sans Marguerite, b/c we were hurting from all the travel and the major elevation differential) went for a short jog to the Union buildings, and then returned to the guesthouse for a delicious breakfast prepared by the staff - who were also wonderful.
The ambiance and hospitality of Fern Ivy were inspiring - stay here and you will seriously consider converting your own home into a guesthouse.

I stayed at the FernIvy Guest House for two weeks recently, while working in Pretoria. I've stayed at lots of B&B's before, but very, very few as pleasant as this! The beautiful house has been renovated from basement to roof-patio. My room was large, elegantly furnished, impeccably kept, and with all the comforts one could ask for (I usually take my own pillow with me when I travel -- this time, it never left my suitcase). Marguerite, my hostess, met me herself at Jo'burg airport. She and her husband Eitel --- a friendly and cultivated couple --- and their staff, went to great lengths to make me feel comfortable and at home (even Oscar, the parrot -- "a Rottweiler with feathers" -- muttered an occasional "hello"). On Saturday night, Marguerite and Eitel invited me and my colleagues to a "braai" (hope I spelt that right!) --- a South African BBQ where all thoughts of "sensible" eating and drinking fly out the window. Thank you, Marguerite and Eitel, for looking after me so well. Next time I'm in Pretoria I know where I'll be staying ---if I'm lucky!

My family and I have been staying at Fern Ivy for almost 10 years. The owner, Marguerite goes out of her way to make you feel welcome and nothing is ever too much trouble. The rooms are luxurious and comfortable, fitted with everything you might need. The staff are courteous and friendly. Highly recommended!
